Alasdair Gold admits he is surprised by Tottenham’s decision to distance themselves from discussions about signing Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen is set to become a free agent at the end of the month when his six-month deal with Brentford expires, after making a successful return to football following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.
The Denmark international has since attracted a flurry of transfer interest in recent weeks with former club Tottenham originally named as the most likely destination this summer (ESPN), while Man United reportedly inquired about a switch to Old Trafford (Sky Sports).
But Spurs’ pursuit of Eriksen has derailed of late after Football.London claimed the club cooled their interest and played down the potential re-signing of the 30-year-old, noting that contact with his representatives was last made over two weeks ago.
Gold has now added to reports of Tottenham distancing themselves from discussions but admitted he was surprised by the decision and questioned whether something caused them to change their mind.
He said on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “I think it’s a bit of a no-brainer, but from everything I’m hearing, and I’ve spoken to people on both sides of this deal, it all seems to be pointing in the same direction and Spurs seem to be cooling their interest in him.
“From what I understand, the last time anyone from Spurs was in contact with his camp was two weeks ago, nothing since. The voices from Spurs are distancing themselves from any discussions about Eriksen whatsoever.
“It will be interesting to see what happens with him, I’ve been so surprised, it’s a real unified voice within Spurs that are distancing themselves from him entirely, so something has clearly made them change their mind.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham’s tune on Eriksen has changed quite a bit recently and it is odd that their last form of communication came over a fortnight ago.
But we need to remember that this is a potential free agent signing and is not necessarily as complex as other deals Spurs may be pursuing.
Spurs could have outlined their terms behind a deal and left it with Eriksen to think about, which is why things may have slowed down.
