Tottenham Hotspur treated their fans to a fine display last Saturday afternoon, overcoming newly-promoted Fulham 3-1 at Wembley.

The doom and gloom surrounding club after the transfer window inaction and the postponement of the move-in date to the new stadium, was swiftly overcome after the 60,000 people in attendance were treated to some excellent football by Pochettino’s men.

The result also took Spurs to the summit of the league table, all be it just for 24 hours before Man City and Liverpool took to the field on Sunday and Monday respectively.  Here are 5 things we learned about the team, from the performance against Fulham:

2) Toby Alderweireld is invaluable to the squad

While Alderweireld is quite clearly a fan favourite, it is fair to say most Spurs fans were resigned to the fate of loosing him last summer after rumours of a fall out with Pochettino. Thanks to Davinson Sanchez’s accomplished performances last year, fans would have been forgiven for thinking losing Toby might not weaken our defence as much as initially feared.
However, Saturday’s performance proved that Alderweireld is indeed an invaluable member of the squad. Apart from his obvious strengths like defensive positioning and composure, his performance proved yet again that he improves our attacking game. His ability to ping long cross-field passes to both wing backs and to step into midfield with the ball at his feet , helped us start multiple attacks. Whether we start with a back 4 or a back 5, he gives the team more balance than Davinson Sanchez does.
