According to a report in The Daily Mirror (25/07, p66), Erik Lamela recommended Tottenham Hotspur make a move for Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero.

Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Romero over the last few weeks and if Alasdair Gold’s latest update is to be believed, Tottenham are increasingly confident of reaching an agreement with the Italian outfit for the centre-back.

However, there is still thought to be still distance between Atalanta’s and Spurs’ valuation of the 23-year-old, with the Serie A club said to be demanding €55m (£47m) for the Argentine’s departure.

Even if Romero arrives at Spurs, he is not likely to play alongside his compatriot Lamela, who is close to sealing a move to Sevilla as a part of a deal to bring Bryan Gil to North London.

Despite this, The Mirror claims the 29-year-old gave full his backing for Tottenham to pursue his international teammate, who played a starring role in La Albiceleste’s journey to the Copa America title this summer.

Paratici would have known well of Romero’s qualities, having brought him from Genoa to Juventus in 2019. So, it is unlikely that the Italian would have had to consult with Lamela about the 23-year-old. Perhaps, the midfielder provided some insight into what the defender is like to work with off the pitch.
