Tottenham Hotspur have opened negotiations with Fiorentina for defender Nikola Milenkovic as an alternative to Cristian Romero, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
The report claims that Romero remains to be at the top of Tottenham’s shopping list and talks with Atalanta are continuing.
Milenkovic is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League side, with his exit from La Viola looking to be an easier deal to arrange with the 23-year-old’s current contract set to expire next summer (transfermarkt).
Romero is currently still contracted to Juventus and moved to Atalanta on a two-season loan deal last summer, with the Serie A side having the option to make the deal permanent for a €16m (£13.6m) fee and would stand to make a substantial profit on the Argentina international.
Milenkovic made 37 appearances in all competitions for Fiorentina last season, with the club having finished in thirteenth place in the Italian top flight.

The defensive transfer saga is going around in circles with the Romero deal proving to be something of a saga of Dybala-like proportions.
At 6ft 5ins, Milenkovic is a physical specimen who would add substantial height to the Tottenham back line. It seems clear that Romero is Fabrizio Romano’s focus, however, the Serbian would also be a welcome addition.
