The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has revealed that Ange Postecoglou’s decision to give Son Heung-min the captain’s armband and appoint James Maddison and Cristian Romero as his deputies has gone down well among the Tottenham squad.
With Hugo Lloris and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg expected to follow Harry Kane out the door, and with Eric Dier seemingly not expected to play a prominent role (if he stays), Postecoglou has had to appoint a new leadership group at Spurs.
Eccleshare explains that the Spurs head coach wanted to cover all areas, with Son seen as an ‘overall leader and centrepiece of the squad’, Maddison respecting the British contingent and Romero seen as a reference for the Spanish speakers and the South Americans in the group.
There was method behind Spurs captain choices
The journalist adds that, unlike players such as Ben Davies, the trio are also expected to start every week, which also informed the decision.
Ecceleshare states that Son’s importance and vocalness in the dressing room have increased over the last few years, which is why he was a natural choice to be the new captain.
He also adds that the South Korean was delighted with the role and it is a position which he intends to take very seriously.
Finally, Eccleshare also asserts that Postescoglou believes that giving Romero leadership responsibilities would aid in the Argentine’s development and help him mature as a player.

Rarely does a club’s leadership group go through such a change in one summer. The change is usually more gradual, which is why there might well be some teetering issues this season before things jell together for the Lilywhites both on and off the pitch.
