Tottenham Hotspur players have been receiving widespread praise for their performance in the win over Manchester United at the weekend, and Cristian Romero has even been selected in Garth Crooks’ team of the week.
Spurs fans were treated to a fantastic display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon as ‘Ange Ball’ took full effect. Indeed, Ange Postecoglou‘s first home game in charge of the club was a resounding success all around.
In attack, the Lilywhites looked dangerous all game, while the midfield pairing of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr was dominant throughout.
Of course, a clean sheet against a team such as Manchester United is very impressive, too. The Spurs defence remained solid under pressure and kept the Red Devils’ attack at bay with an assured performance from all involved.
While Guglielmo Vicario has garnered much of the praise for his role in the defensive shutout, it is another Tottenham player who caught the eye for Garth Crooks.
Cristian Romero named in the Team of the Week
In his team of the week selection for the BBC, Crooks described Cristian Romero as “outstanding” in the game against Manchester United.
He said: “We know this footballer is a good defender. You don’t play for Argentina in the World Cup final if you can’t play.
“Towards the end of last season, I thought Romero became a little tired after his exploits in Qatar, as well as frustrated by the poor performance of Spurs, forcing him to make tackles he had no right to make.
“He was unlucky to be substituted against Brentford on the opening day of the season with suspected concussion but was outstanding against Manchester United.
“Well done Michael Oliver for not giving a handball against Romero here when it was clearly ball to hand and travelling at the speed of light. Everyone knows the rule is a bad one.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With a more solid partner beside him in Micky van de Ven, and a more adventurous style of play throughout the team, I think we will really see Cristian Romero excel now in this Spurs team. He looked far more calm and composed against United and it really helped him put in a strong performance.
