BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has named his Premier League team of the week and, after the 5-2 win over Burnley, it’s no surprise that three Tottenham Hotspur players make the line-up.
Tottenham bounced back from the Carabao Cup defeat in style this weekend, with a ruthless display against Premier League new boys, Burnley.
Ange Postecoglou‘s side maintained their unbeaten start to the new league campaign in style at Turf Moor. However, they had to come from behind to claim all three points.
First-half goals from Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero turned the tide in Spurs’ favour just before the break. Then, in the second half, the Lilywhites ramped things up, with James Maddison increasing the lead, before Son added two more goals to complete his hat-trick.
The three points leave Spurs in second place in the league heading into the international break, and it’s safe to say spirits are high around the club right now.
Who made Garth Crooks’ team of the week?
In his regular BBC Sport column, Garth Crooks picked the three Tottenham goalscorers in his team of the week, and here’s why.
On Romero, Crooks said: “Spurs looked reasonably comfortable in a back four. Although I don’t usually pick defenders from a team that concedes two goals away from home, I’m prepared to make an exception on this occasion. Romero’s finish for his goal was exceptional for a central defender and that’s why he’s in my team.”
Maddison also made the line-up, with Crooks adding: “At last, Spurs look like they have found a player who can handle the ball in midfield again. Under Mourinho and Conte they struggled to find someone who could make others around him play and unlock defences.
“Not since Christian Eriksen have Spurs had a player of that calibre. The introduction of Maddison seems to have Tottenham playing in a way their two previous managers could not.”
And, though it may be an obvious pick, here’s what Crooks said about Son: “Son replaced [Richarlison] as the lone striker up front and destroyed Burnley in one of the best individual displays I’ve seen from the South Korean for some time as he scored a hat-trick.
“The departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and the removal of his spectre seems to have set the Spurs players free. It has also given manager Ange Postecoglou the opportunity to pass the captain’s armband to Son and it seems to be doing him the world of good.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Our three goalscorers – and incidentally our three key leaders – were outstanding at the weekend and thoroughly deserve their place in this team. If Spurs are to be successful this season, this triumvirate will be the spine of the team and the foundation upon which we build.
