Alasdair Gold has said that Ange Postecoglou has already developed a good relationship with Cristian Romero, who the Australian quickly identified as the new leader of the Tottenham backline.
After an impressive first season at Spurs following his switch to the club in 2021, Romero was one of several Tottenham stars who struggled last season as the Lilywhites stumbled their way to a disappointing eighth-placed finish.
The Argentine came in for plenty of criticism for his displays and he admitted in an interview with The Athletic during the summer that his performances did not live up to the standards he has set for himself.
The centre-back also expressed his commitment to Tottenham and insisted that Postecoglou was just the kind of manager that the club needed to change the mood around that place.
Postecoglou and Romero have a good relationship
Gold now referenced that interview from Romero and revealed that the former Juventus man and the new Spurs head coach have really hit it off.
The journalist said on the recent episode of the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “He really kind of shot down claims that he loved playing for Argentina more than Spurs and his heart was not really with the club.
“He was very clear, ‘No, no, I’ve turned down deals already this summer to leave Spurs, I really believe in it’.
“And I think a lot of it is down to [Ange] Postecoglou. Postecoglou and him have just really clicked. Postecoglou calls him the most influential defender in the back line and he is, it’s true.
“He’s kind of the elder statesman of that back line now which is bizarre when he’s 25. It’s a really stepping stone season for me for Romero.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Postecoglou’s decision to make Romero one of the vice-captains was a very smart decision as the Argentine seems to be playing with a lot more responsibility.
As has been reported, the 25-year-old is also evidently quite a popular figure among the Spanish-speaking contingent at Spurs, and giving him leadership responsibility has ensured an even greater buy-in from that clique to Postecoglou’s methods.
