Heurelho Gomes has named Luis Enrique and Roberto De Zerbi as managers who could get Tottenham back on the right track after years of underperforming.
It is far from clear at the moment who Spurs’ top managerial target is, or even if there is a number one candidate, for that matter.
The club now thought to be working on appointing a new sporting director before resuming their search for a head coach (Daily Mirror).
One person Tottenham have decided to overlook is Mauricio Pochettino, who is now on the verge of taking over at Chelsea.
The Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that Daniel Levy is looking for a new coach in the mould of Pochettino in 2014 – young, hungry, up-and-coming, with the Spurs chairman feeling that the 2023 version does not fit the profile.
Gomes believes that it has been all downhill for Spurs since the Argentine departed back in 2019.
The former Tottenham goalkeeper told Football.London: “Spurs are struggling, they are struggling at the moment.
“I think they still have a good team, but they couldn’t work with it, the team they had.
“I think they need to change a few things over there to get in the way that they were going.
“They were going up, even fighting for the Premier League when Pochettino was there.
“Since he left I think they started to go downhill again.”
The Daily Mail reported last week that with Julian Nageslamnn no longer in contention for the role, De Zerbi and Enrique have emerged as some of the leading contenders for the job alongside Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.
Gomes believes that the Brighton head coach and the former Barcelona boss could bring back the attacking style of play that the Lilywhites were once known for.
When asked who Tottenham should appoint, the Brazilian responded: “Luis Enrique I think.
“For me, I think he would be good if there was a possibility to sign.
“Also, the Brighton manager I like, [Roberto] De Zerbi. I like him as well.
“They need to bring back the style of football they were playing while Pochettino was there. That’s the type of game I think Spurs need to play.”
Spurs Web Opinion
De Zerbi stands out to be as the candidate who best fits the profile Spurs are reportedly looking for.
However, getting him out of Brighton would not prove easy, given the Seagulls look set to finish above us.
There also appears to be some concerns at Tottenham over the Italian’s temperament.
