The Athletic’s James Maw has claimed that Evan Ferguson could be sold for a world-record transfer fee by Brighton next summer.
Multiple outlets, including TEAMtalk, reported during the summer transfer window that Tottenham explored a potential move for Ferguson once it became clear that Harry Kane would leave the club but Brighton had no intention of parting ways with the starlet.
Some other publications, including Goal, suggested that the Seagulls had put a £120m price tag on the youngster to ward off interest from the Lilywhites and other potential suitors.
Ferguson, who is contracted at the Amex Stadium until 2028, has started the new campaign on fire, with a hat-trick against Newcastle on Saturday taking his tally to four in four Premier League matches so far (Transfermarkt).
Maw has now predicted that the Republic of Ireland international could be sold for a higher fee than the world record €222m (£190m) fee that PSG paid to sign Neymar from Barcelona back in 2017.
Evan Ferguson could cost £200m, journalist predicts
The journalist said on the View From The Lane podcast: “He’s going to break the transfer record by the way. £200m that’s my prediction now.
“I think it might even have been too late by this summer. I think if Spurs had been properly in for him this summer I think someone else might have jumped the queue.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Given the length of Ferguson’s contract, I certainly would not be surprised if Brighton demand a world-record fee for the striker next summer if he gets more than 20 goals this season, which he looks quite likely to.
