The latest report on Tottenham Hotspur’s lengthy search for a new manager has put forward two names who could become strong contenders this week – Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham have been without a permanent manager since the end of March when Antonio Conte left the club.

Cristian Stellini replaced him as interim manager, but only lasted four games before Ryan Mason took over as Acting Head Coach.

Multiple names have been linked with the vacancy in the meantime, and many have fallen by the wayside, often distancing themselves from the position.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot appeared to be in line for the role until late last week, when it emerged he would be staying in the Netherlands next season (Dan Kilpatrick).

It’s back to the drawing board for the Spurs hierarchy now, but a fresh report from the Daily Mail claims two managers with connections to Brighton and Hove Albion are now coming forward as potential frontrunners.

Graham Potter, who has been out of work since he was dismissed by Chelsea after just eight months at the club, is now thought to be back on Tottenham’s radar.

The former Brighton and Chelsea boss is believed to be more of a “collaborator with rather than a fighter of chairman,” and it is suggested his “unique brand of sanity” could help to stabilise Tottenham.

Despite the tumultuous time at Chelsea, the report claims Potter’s reputation as “one of the best coaches” is still intact.

Alongside Potter, Spurs remain interested in the man who replaced him at Brighton, De Zerbi.

However, it currently “seems unlikely” that De Zerbi would move on given his positive relationship with his employers.

The Lilywhites are not giving up yet, though, as De Zerbi “fits everything Levy wants at the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We need to give up on De Zerbi as he is not going anywhere now that he has achieved what he has at Brighton. Potter is an option I am not against at all.

He had a torrid time at Chelsea, but anyone would have struggled there, and I would love to see what he could do for us.

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi remains a top target for Tottenham Hotspur in their search for a new manager, but the Italian is expected to stay at his current club.

De Zerbi took over from Graham Potter earlier this season at Brighton, and has continued the fine work set in place by the former Chelsea boss. He has led Brighton to sixth place this year and European football next year.

Tottenham are carrying out an extensive search for their next permanent manager and Spurs have long been impressed by the work done by Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton (Evening Standard).

De Zerbi himself is thought to regard the Spurs role as coming too early for him in his career, and has signalled his intent to stay at Brighton (Football Insider).

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian coach is believed to still be among the top candidates on Tottenham’s list despite not wanting to leave Brighton.

Romano said: “Roberto de Zerbi, linked with Tottenham job again as one of the top names in the list but he’s not planning to leave Brighton this summer; not a concrete option now.

“De Zerbi, 100% focused on Brighton project. Postecoglou remains in Spurs list; always been there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have no idea why we are still pursuing Roberto De Zerbi when he has made it abundantly clear that he is not interested in leaving Brighton at this stage.

He’s got a brilliant club there and has European football to look forward to next year, so it makes no sense for him to come to us.

We really need to move on and focus on attainable targets or we are going to have another ridiculous summer of wild goose chases in the search for a manager.

Football Insider have revealed that Roberto De Zerbi has rejected the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur as he wants to stay for at least one more season at Brighton.

Roberto De Zerbi was once mooted as one of the front-runners for the Spurs job, with the North London club said to have been impressed by the work he has done at the Amex Stadium since replacing Graham Potter last October (The Daily Express).

Football Insider have now asserted that Tottenham did show ‘strong interest’ in the Italian over recent months as they were looking at various candidates to replace Antonio Conte.

The publication alleges that the Lilywhites made a ‘strong push’ for De Zerbi but the 43-year-old had no intention of leaving the Amex Stadium this summer.

It is asserted that the former Sassuolo boss felt that the Tottenham job came a year too early for him and that he would like to gain more experience with the Seagulls before making a step up to a Champions League calibre club.

Spurs Web Opinion

De Zerbi was always my number one preference even ahead of Pochettino and Nagelsmann as the Italian appears to be the complete package.

I suspect that Tottenham would have only moved on to other targets such as Slot after testing the waters for the Brighton boss and learning that he had no intention of leaving the club this summer.

The Athletic now reveal that while the Italian has indeed been on Tottenham‘s wishlist, the North London club have never made a concrete effort to snap him up.

The publication questions why it is that Spurs have ‘looked the other way’ and ‘stayed at arm’s length’ from De Zerbi, suggesting that the price could not have been the reason.

This is because the compensation package to sign the 43-year-old would only cost around £11m, which is said to be less than what Feyenoord were demanding for Arne Slot.

The Athletic go on to state that it could be the Brighton boss’ temperament and his reputation for being ‘high-maintenance’ that may have put off the Tottenham hierarchy.

Spurs Web Opinion

It has been clear right from the start that De Zerbi would be the best candidate for the job.

I suspect that Tottenham had indeed reached out to the Italian through intermediaries but were informed that he wants to stay put at the Amex Stadium, which is why they turned their attention to other targets.

Tottenham Hotspur are not believed to have a number one target when it comes to their search for a new manager, but do have a variety of names they are considering for the role.

Since Antonio Conte left the club at the end of March, Tottenham fans have seen Cristian Stellini last just four games as interim manager before Ryan Mason took over as Acting Head Coach until the end of the season.

The process of finding a new permanent manager has been a disappointing one.

It has been in a similar vein to the summer of 2021 which saw multiple managers turn Spurs down before they settled on Nuno Espirito Santo, a man who was then sacked after just 124 days in charge.

The latest manager to reject Tottenham is Feyenoord‘s Arne Slot, who appears to be signing a new contract with his current club despite strong links to the Spurs role (Fabrizio Romano).

Now, a report from The Guardian suggests Tottenham do not have a standout contender for the vacant managerial role, but have plenty of names on the shortlist.

The “broader list of names” includes Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, who has a €15 million (£13 million) buyout clause this summer, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, Roberto De Zerbi, and Luis Enrique. However, it is expected to be “unlikely” that De Zerbi would leave Brighton for Spurs.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports News also believe Postecoglou, Luis Enrique, and De Zerbi are on Tottenham’s radar.

However, they also suggest Fulham’s Marco Silva is in consideration, along with former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter, and Brendan Rodgers.

Spurs Web Opinion

Out of those names, I would go for Ruben Amorim. His Sporting side caused us all sorts of problems in the Champions League, and they play very aggressive, attacking football.

That said, I really cannot see any manager leaving a job to come to us, so we may have to look at the unemployed options, of which you’d have to say Enrique is the best option.

Dan Kilpatrick has written in The Evening Standard that those who know Arne Slot well expect him to have a similar impact to the one that Roberto De Zerbi has had at Brighton should the Dutchman get the Tottenham job.

Kilpatrick explains that Arne Slot‘s teams play an ‘intense, front-foot football, characterised by a fast possession game and non-stop pressing’, which is why Tottenham see him as a good fit.

However, the Feyenoord boss’ teams are also defensively disciplined as he expects his players to work tirelessly without the ball.

Arne Slot

The journalist reveals that his high-octane approach has not just won him comparisons with De Zerbi but also Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa.

Kilpatrick explains that Slot also has a great record of improving young players, which is one of the things that persuaded Daniel Levy he would be the right man for Spurs.

The Dutch coach is said to be an admirer of Guardiola’s methods, often using the Spaniard’s teams as an example to show his players what he expects.

It is alleged that Slot played clips of Manchester City’s Champions League final against Chelsea in 2021 to his Feyenoord players in order to show his players how defensive runs can limit chances even for talented opposition sides.

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is pleasing to hear that Tottenham are on the verge of appointing a head coach who would bring back some entertaining football to the club, the jury is out on how effective the style of play would be in the Premier League.

It is worth remembering that even Guardiola struggled in his first season in England despite having an unbelievable squad at his disposal while Beilsa’s methods made Leeds extremely susceptible to counter-attacks.

Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that rumoured Tottenham target Robert Sanchez is no longer training with the Brighton first team.

The writing appears on the wall for Hugo Lloris, with reports over the last couple of weeks indicating that Tottenham are expected to sign a new number one who is good with the ball at his feet and that the Frenchman is not likely to stick around as an understudy (The Athletic).

One man who could fit the bill is Robert Sanchez, who is rumoured to be one of the goalkeepers on Spurs’ wishlist ahead of the summer transfer window (Football Insider).

The Spaniard lost his number-one spot to Jason Steele a couple of months ago, having been restricted to very few appearances since March.

It was reported by talkSPORT last month that the Segulls are expected to listen to offers for the 25-year-old this summer.

De Zerbi has now confirmed that Sanchez is no longer playing a part in his first-team plans as the goalkeeper does not wish to be.

Ahead of his side’s trip to Newcastle, the Italian told The Daily Mail: “With Robert, we spoke before the Arsenal game and we decided together the best solution was to stay home.”

When asked why Sanchez is not training with the Brighton first team, De Zerbi responded: “He decides everything. Robert decides, and at the moment, it’s like this. He wanted it this way, not me, not the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Sanchez has lost his place to Steele is not a ringing endorsement of his quality.

While Spurs might consider the Spaniard as someone who could potentially offer competition between the sticks, I doubt they would view the 25-year-old as someone who can take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris.

The Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has said that he does not expect Roberto De Zerbi to be tempted by the prospect of joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

After it emerged last week that Julian Nageslmann was no longer in contention for the Spurs job, The Daily Mail reported at the time that De Zerbi, Luis Enrique and Arne Slot have emerged as some of the North London club’s top candidates.

Arne Slot

It looks like Tottenham have since taken some steps towards pursuing Slot, with The Telegraph revealing on Wednesday that the North London club have increased their interest in the Dutchman.

The report claimed that the Lilywhites are now keen to speak to the 44-year-old, who has guided Feyenoord to a historic title win this season.

The outlet stated that while Spurs continue to insist there is no one top target yet, they are now giving ‘serious consideration’ to Slot.

However, there have not really been any indications to suggest that Tottenham have advanced their interest in De Zerbi, and Taylor believes that the Italian is likely to remain at the Amex Stadium next season.

The journalist told GiveMeSport about Spurs’ managerial search: “If you’re looking at the fact that [Mauricio] Pochettino is obviously going to Chelsea, Nagelsmann is arguably the best option on the table.

“I know there are some other very decent managers. I mean, De Zerbi’s one, but I don’t see him joining Tottenham. I see him staying at Brighton.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Brighton are likely to finish above us and also look favourites to qualify for the Europa League. So, it would be quite hard to tempt De Zerbi into jumping ship this summer.

I suspect that Tottenham put out feelers to the Italian but found that he was not too keen on the job, which is why they are now seemingly looking elsewhere.

Heurelho Gomes has named Luis Enrique and Roberto De Zerbi as managers who could get Tottenham back on the right track after years of underperforming.

It is far from clear at the moment who Spurs’ top managerial target is, or even if there is a number one candidate, for that matter.

The club now thought to be working on appointing a new sporting director before resuming their search for a head coach (Daily Mirror).

One person Tottenham have decided to overlook is Mauricio Pochettino, who is now on the verge of taking over at Chelsea.

The Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that Daniel Levy is looking for a new coach in the mould of Pochettino in 2014 – young, hungry, up-and-coming, with the Spurs chairman feeling that the 2023 version does not fit the profile.

Gomes believes that it has been all downhill for Spurs since the Argentine departed back in 2019.

The former Tottenham goalkeeper told Football.London: “Spurs are struggling, they are struggling at the moment.

“I think they still have a good team, but they couldn’t work with it, the team they had.

“I think they need to change a few things over there to get in the way that they were going.

“They were going up, even fighting for the Premier League when Pochettino was there.

“Since he left I think they started to go downhill again.”

The Daily Mail reported last week that with Julian Nageslamnn no longer in contention for the role, De Zerbi and Enrique have emerged as some of the leading contenders for the job alongside Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.

Gomes believes that the Brighton head coach and the former Barcelona boss could bring back the attacking style of play that the Lilywhites were once known for.

When asked who Tottenham should appoint, the Brazilian responded: “Luis Enrique I think.

“For me, I think he would be good if there was a possibility to sign.

“Also, the Brighton manager I like, [Roberto] De Zerbi. I like him as well.

“They need to bring back the style of football they were playing while Pochettino was there. That’s the type of game I think Spurs need to play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

De Zerbi stands out to be as the candidate who best fits the profile Spurs are reportedly looking for.

However, getting him out of Brighton would not prove easy, given the Seagulls look set to finish above us.

There also appears to be some concerns at Tottenham over the Italian’s temperament.

Tim Sherwood has urged the Tottenham hierarchy to do everything in their power to bring Roberto De Zerbi to the club as their next head coach.

It has now been a month and a half since Antonio Conte departed Tottenham but we are no closer to finding out who is likely to replace the Italian at the helm.

Some reports over the last week have suggested that Spurs are now focused on appointing a sporting director before resuming their search for a new head coach (Football Insider).

One man who is no longer in the running to take over at N17 is Julian Nagelsmann, with Tottenham, reportedly pulling out of the race for the German last week (Evening Standard).

It was reported last Friday by The Daily Mail that with Nagelsmann no longer in contention, De Zerbi, along with Arne Slot and Luis Enrique have now emerged as contenders to take over at Hotspur Way.

Sherwood believes that the Brighton boss is the ‘perfect’ candidate for the Lilywhites, given that he is already proven in the Premier League.

The former interim Spurs head coach told Sky Sports Football Daily about the 43-year-old: “For me, the perfect man out there who has rehearsed in the Premier League, who I have seen now, if it was me making the decision, I would do everything to get De Zerbi to get him to the football club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Right from the beginning, De Zerbi has been my number one preference. In fact, he is the one man that I would have even taken over Nagelsmann and Pochettino.

I found it quite weird that Spurs seemingly ruled out the Italian early in the process due to fears over his temperament.

For me, the 43-year-old would certainly be a safer bet than the likes of Slot or Alonso but it remains to be seen if he would leave Brighton for the Tottenham job.

Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton have been hit with the biggest fine of the Premier League season following the bust-up on the touchline earlier this campaign (Sun).

After a mass confrontation between the two benches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, both the Lilywhites and Seagulls have been hit with £100,000 fines.

Roberto De Zerbi was already ill-tempered before the start of the game after he marched up to Spurs interim head coach Cristian Stellini and wagged his finger in his face.

Around 58 minutes into the match, there was a disagreement on the touchline between the two benches which quickly turned into somewhat of a scuffle.

Even though Stellini walked away from the incident, both he and De Zerbi were shown red cards for failing to control their teams during the match.

£100,000 is the largest fine to be handed out this season, with Man City receiving a £75,000 fine for failing to control their players in February.

An FA statement read: “Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton and Hove Albion have been fined £100,000 each for a mass confrontation that occurred during their Premier League match on Saturday 8 April.

“Both clubs admitted they failed to ensure their benches conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and did not behave in a way which is proper during the 58th minute.

“An independent regulatory commission imposed their fines following a subsequent hearing.”

It seems strange that this is the biggest fine of the Premier League season. I really don’t think it was that bad, there was just a confrontation on the touchline and I feel like we see plenty of them. At the end of the day, £100,000 isn’t exactly much for Tottenham to deal with though.

With the end of the season looming, Tottenham Hotspur are in a similar situation compared to the 2020/2021 season. Spurs are finishing the season with an interim manager and are essentially moping towards the finish line.

To add to that, Spurs were knocked out of Europe in pathetic fashion as well as not knowing the future of their record goal-scorer, Harry Kane.

This season’s run-in is much like the one a couple of seasons ago. Hopefully, Tottenham will not wait 72 days to appoint the next permanent manager as they did during the chaotic summer of 2021.

Who is the best option to lead Spurs going forward?

Arne Slot

Arne Slot is a name that perhaps was not known by many until the links with Tottenham started to appear. Slot is currently the manager of Eredivisie side Feyenoord, who are leading the Dutch league by eight points.

Slot has drawn attention from other Premier League clubs due to his attractive style of football that has propelled the Rotterdam-based club to the top of Eredivisie (Times).

However, there are doubts about whether or not Slot could take on such a big job in the Premier League.

However, Feyenoord recently toppled former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho’s Roma side 1-0 in first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi has been rumoured to be one of Tottenham’s candidates for their next manager (Express). The Italian ticks all of the boxes as his side plays possession-based football, is flexible with his tactics, and integrates younger players into the starting eleven.

However, there is one slight issue with De Zerbi. De Zerbi is known to have a short temper at times. Spurs fans (and the club) have seen this story before with Antonio Conte and also saw this firsthand in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Brighton.

De Zerbi’s improvement on Graham Potter’s foundations along with his short temper and extreme passion might be too much to bring him to N17.

(Photo by Alex Livesey – Danehouse/Getty Images)

Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany is another manager who Spurs have been strongly linked to in the past few days (Sun).

Kompany, like the managers listed above, has also implemented an entertaining style of football with Burnley. This style of football has taken Burnley to the top of the EFL Championship as they have already secured promotion to the Premier League.

This brand of football is quite the turnaround at Turf Moor. In the past, Burnley were known by many for playing in a much more defensive manner.

However, one qualm about the Belgian is that he is only 37 and thus has a short managing career. Another potential doubt is that he may want to take over at Manchester City when Pep Guardiola leaves as he was a legend when playing for City.

Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann

There is also former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine loves the club and would probably commit to a long-term deal.

But recent links have come out stating that a reunion with Pochettino is unlikely for various reasons (Star). The same can be said for ex-Bayern Munich man Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann would be a great fit at Tottenham, but recent reports have said that the German is more interested in the Chelsea job (FootballLondon).

The Verdict –

In my opinion, I think Arne Slot would be the perfect fit for Tottenham.

Given that De Zerbi did not have an impressive audition against Spurs last week (his off-the-pitch emotions) and Kompany’s short managing career thus far, I think that it is fair to say that Slot would slot in nicely at Tottenham.

Slot is 44 and plays the type of football that Tottenham supporters want to see.

While many might say that his coaching career is young (like Kompany’s), I think the fact that Slot not having any connections to an EPL club could work massively in Tottenham Hotspur’s favour.

Dutch football expert, Marcel Van der Kaan, has talked in glowing terms about Arne Slot’s footballing philosophy and claimed that the Feyenoord boss would love to take over at Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the past month, multiple outlets have suggested that Slot is one of the options at the top of Spurs’ wishlist to replace Antonio Conte (Daily Star).

The Times reported on Wednesday that Tottenham are looking for a young progressive coach of the 44-year-old’s profile but added that the Lilywhites might face competition from both Crystal Palace and West Ham United for his signature.

The report added that Slot was also on Brighton’s shortlist to replace Graham Potter last summer before they eventually hired Roberto De Zerbi.

Van der Kaan has now confirmed that Premier League clubs have been looking at the Feyenoord boss for a long time and added that Palace is a ‘serious option’ for him this summer.

He told talkSPORT – 13 April, 11 am: “A number of clubs in England have been following him for quite a while. Crystal Palace are, I think, a serious option for him.

“And Tottenham Hotspur, who he would also love to coach one day, if not this summer. If they do want to get him, they will have to come up with a massive amount of money.”

Van der Kaan also suggested that Slot is one of the most impressive managers he has seen in the Eredivisie over the last three decades.

The journalist described the Spurs managerial target as being ‘very similar to Pep Guardiola’ and remarked: “The way his team plays, the attacking style, is even more impressive than just getting to that Conference League final.

“I know for a fact he has had talks with Premier League clubs over the past few months. The top technical directors and boards are really doing their homework (on Slot).

“He is, in my opinion, the most attractive-playing football manager I have seen for the last 30 years in the Dutch leagues.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Erik Ten Hag’s relative success at Old Trafford would perhaps be a tick in Slot’s favour as it would convince the Spurs hierarchy that Slot can make the required step up from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

However, I would still be surprised if the Dutchman is seen as anything more than a fallback option for the North London club.

I think the 44-year-old is likely to end up at Palace or West Ham this summer.

Tuttosport have revealed that Arsenal are considering making a move for Tottenham’s managerial target Roberto De Zerbi as they fear Mikel Arteta could leave at the end of the season.

It was reported last month even before Antonio Conte’s official departure that De Zerbi was one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist, with the Spurs hierarchy said to have been impressed by the work he has done at the Amex Stadium since replacing Graham Potter (The Athletic).

The Daily Express reported a few days ago that Spurs have not given up on their pursuit of the Brighton boss despite the Italian’s inclination to remain at the Amex Stadium.

The report asserted that De Zerbi has a release clause in his contract with the Seagulls, which will become active in the summer, and he is ‘in serious consideration’ for the Lilywhites job.

However, TuttoSport have now suggested that Tottenham might have competition to contend with from their North London rivals for De Zerbi’s signature.

The outlet claims Arsenal fear that Real Madrid could approach Arteta at the end of the season about replacing Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Should the Spaniard leave the Emirates, the Gunners have allegedly identified De Zerbi as the prime candidate to succeed him.

Spurs Web Opinion

The prospect of Arsenal losing Arteta seems far-fetched for the time being. This is not something that would concern Spurs too much.

I have personally maintained right from the start that De Zerbi would be the best man for the Spurs job.

The only person I would take over the Italian is Julian Nagelsmann, who is looking likely to be out of our reach.

Alasdair Gold has admitted that he is a big fan of Roberto De Zerbi and that he loves watching Brighton play under the Italian.

Until last week, it was thought that De Zerbi was one of the leading candidates to replace Antonio Conte at the helm, with The Daily Express reporting that Tottenham had not given up on their pursuit of the Brighton boss despite his inclination to stay at the Amex Stadium.

However, things might have changed after the way the Seagulls boss behaved during his side’s clash against Spurs on Saturday, with both him and Cristian Stellini receiving red cards after the two benches clashed in the second half.

The Telegraph claimed a couple of days ago De Zerbi might have ruled himself out of the running for the Spurs job with his behaviour as there were already concerns among the Tottenham hierarchy about the Italian’s temperament.

Gold has now referred to the Brighton boss as an ‘intense character’ and suggested that Levy might have reservations about hiring another temperamental Italian.

The journalist said on his YouTube Channel about De Zerbi: “He’s an intense character.

“I do wonder, you know… Obviously, I was a big fan of him as a potential Spurs candidate and still am because of the football. The football is incredible it’s beautiful to watch.

“But yeah, you do start to wonder whether after the Conte era and the kind of firecracker of a manager he was, the incendiary type he could be, would you want to bring in another person who looks like he’s going to be very similar?”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think De Zerbi’s behaviour would have as much of an impact on his candidacy for the Spurs job as some seem to suggest.

Unlike, Mourinho and Conte, the 43-year-old does not have a history of bad-mouthing his own players publicly, and I do not think the Spurs hierarchy would mind as long as his anger is directed towards the opposition.

Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton have both been charged by the FA for failing to control their technical area during the Premier League match at the weekend.

Tempers were already high before the game even kicked off, with Brighton boss De Zerbi wagging his finger in the face of Spurs interim head coach, Cristian Stellini.

However, things certainly boiled over during the match itself when the referee made a number of questionable on-field decisions in Tottenham’s favour.

In the 58th minute of the game, there was a scuffle between both benches on the touchline which ended in both Stellini and De Zerbi being shown straight red cards.

This comes despite the fact that Stellini actively walked away from the situation. It appears he was punished for failing to keep his staff under control.

The FA now state that Spurs and Brighton have until April 17 to respond to the charges of failing to ‘ensure their technical area occupants conducted themselves in an orderly fashion’.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I expect both Brighton and Spurs to be hit with the same fine – probably something in the five-figure range. However, I would be surprised if the red cards actually carry any kind of suspension.

Journalist Dean Jones has dismissed suggestions that Roberto De Zerbi’s behaviour on Saturday will put Tottenham off from pursuing the Brighton boss.

Brighton have gone up a level since De Zerbi took over from Graham Potter back in September, and the Seagulls certainly delivered an excellent performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday and were unlucky to take nothing from the game.

The South Coast club’s improvement under the Italian is thought to have caught Spurs’ eye, with the 43-year-old reported to be one of the names on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Antonio Conte (The Daily Express).

However, De Zerbi and his staff behaved quite erratically on the touchline on Saturday and the situation reached a boiling point in the second half when the two benches clashed, resulting in both the Brighton boss and Cristian Stellini being sent off.

The Telegraph revealed a couple of days that the former Sassuolo boss might have ruled himself out of the running for the Spurs job with his behaviour on Saturday as there were already concerns among the Tottenham hierarchy about his temperament.

However, Jones has suggested that Daniel Levy would have not minded seeing De Zerbi’s passion.

When asked if Tottenham would have been put off by the Seagulls boss’ behaviour, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I don’t think it would have put them off him necessarily.

“It’s just a moment in football when passions get high and that should be something that Daniel Levy will be pleased to see in a potential manager candidate.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I thought De Zerbi’s candidacy for the Spurs job would have been strengthened immensely if he had behaved calmly on the touchline as some of the football on show from Brighton was excellent.

However, there is no doubt that the 43-year-old harmed his prospects by behaving in the manner he did.

After the Mourinho and Conte episodes, Levy will be wary of hiring another temperamental head coach.

However, the speculation linking the Italian with a move to Spurs has died down over recent weeks, with the likes of Julian Nagelsman, Arne Slot (Daily Star) and Luis Enrique (Fabrizio Romano – Here We Go podcast) emerging as the top contenders for the job.

The Express have now revealed that De Zerbi is very much still on Tottenham’s radar, with the Brighton boss said to be ‘hugely admired’ at the North London club.

The report states that the 43-year-old has a release clause in his contract at the Amex, which will become active in the summer.

It is explained that De Zerbi has ambitions to remain at Brighton but Tottenham ‘are not deterred’ by that, with the former Sassuolo coach still ‘in serious consideration’ by the Lilywhites.

However, The Telegraph have suggested that De Zerbi’s behaviour against Spurs at the weekend may have confirmed fears within the club that he is too hot-headed.

Spurs Web Opinion

The only manager I would take ahead of De Zerbi among all the names we have been linked with is Nagelsmann.

I am surprised to see that the likes of Kompany and Slot are being mooted as bigger targets for Spurs than the Brighton boss.

I am convinced that De Zerbi is going to end up at a top club sooner rather than later and I believe Tottenham should do all they can to prise him away from the South Coast.

He continued to wind up the home dug-out through the game, which eventually ended in a tussle between the two benches and both coaches being sent off.

The Brighton boss was quite unapologetic about his actions after the game and refused to divulge exactly why he was upset with Stellini, although reports indicate that he took offence to the 48-year-old saying he had carried on the good work of his predecessor Graham Potter (Sky Sports).

The Telegraph now reveal that although De Zerbi was one of the names on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Antonio Conte at the end of the season, there were some at the North London club who felt that the 43-year-old could be a loose cannon.

The report states that his behaviour on Saturday would have confirmed those suspicions and might have ruled the former Sassuolo boss out of the running for the Tottenham job.

Spurs Web Opinion

De Zerbi certainly did not conduct himself with any grace on Saturday and would have gone down in the Tottenham hierarchy’s estimation.

However, I do not mind someone having a fiery character as long as their anger is primarily directed at the opposition and not one’s own players (as Mourinho and Conte were guilty of).

Brighton’s performance on Saturday only further confirmed my belief that De Zerbi would be the best man for the Spurs job after Nagelsmann among the candidates available.

Cristian Stellini has lavished praise on Roberto De Zerbi ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Brighton, admitting that the Seagulls boss has improved considerably as a manager over the last few years.

While Brighton were a solid outfit under Graham Potter, De Zerbi has taken the team to the next level since taking over last September, with the South Coast club drastically improving their goal output under the Italian.

His side come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium unbeaten in seven matches across all competitions and will undoubtedly pose a stern test to the Lilywhites.

Stellini has gone up against De Zerbi during his playing days when the former was playing in Bari’s defence and the latter was upfront for Avellino.

When asked about locking horns with his compatriot on the pitch, the Spurs interim head coach told Football.London: “When he was a player he was aggressive. I challenged him sometimes and he was really aggressive.

“He was a good number 10 striker. He was good technically but very aggressive in the way he played and also talented.

“I don’t know how he is like a manager. I met him sometimes but I didn’t speak a lot with him. For sure his results were every time good results.

“He gave to his team a good characteristic. He’s very strong in the way he wants to play.”

Stellini admitted that De Zerbi has built on the good work that Potter had done at the Amex Stadium, and that he has proven his coaching metal since arriving in the Premier League.

The 48-year-old continued: “I think De Zerbi is not fluid (tactically) like Potter. De Zerbi is more a manager consistent in the way he wants to hurt the opponent.

“He is more focused with the ball and what they can do with the ball and being aggressive when they lose the ball.

“Potter was more fluid in the change of system but the players are smart to do it. You have to create an intelligent player to do it.”

“He improved a lot. He has a great personality like a manager and he arrive here in a new country and quickly he put his sign on his team.

“That is not easy for everyone and De Zerbi show also in England, in the Premier League he is a great manager.”

The characteristics that Stellini lists are perhaps one of the reasons why the Brighton man is reportedly thought to be on Tottenham’s wishlist to take over in the summer (Telegraph).

When asked if the 43-year-old will eventually take charge of one of the Premier League’s established big clubs, Stellini responded: “I hope for him, but I don’t know.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Reading between the lines, it seems like Stellini feels that De Zerbi has been given a huge helping hand by the base that was already created by Graham Potter at Brighton.

I personally rate the Seagulls boss very highly, both tactically and in terms of man management.

I feel that the 43-year-old should be Tottenham’s top target and that we should pull out all the stops to get him if Nagelsmann proves to be out of our reach.
