Record (as relayed by Sport Witness) have claimed that while Sporting Lisbon have begun talks with Marcus Edwards over a new contract, the winger continues to dream of playing in the Premier League.

Edwards has been continually linked with a return to Spurs over recent years, with the Tottenham academy graduate having plenty of success in the Portuguese top flight.

The latest such report came from O Jogo, who claimed last month that the North London club are continuing to follow the winger’s progress and even ‘recently’ made contact with the Portuguese club about the player’s availability.

The outlet explained that while Spurs initially had a 50 per cent sell-on clause for the 24-year-old, they gave up 15 per cent as part of the deal to bring Pedro Porro from Jose Alvalade Stadium to N17 back in January.

Marcus Edwards in talks over new Sporting deal

Record have now claimed that Sporting have begun talks with Edwards’ camp over a new contract, with the Lions willing to raise his salary from €700k (£600k) to €1m (£860k).

However, they suggest that Premier League clubs continue to circle over the silky left-footer, naming Tottenham and Chelsea as interested clubs.

The report adds that Edwards continues to harbour the ‘dream’ of playing in the Premier League and getting a call-up to the England squad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Edwards has made an ordinary start to the new season and his form during the latter stages of last campaign also left a lot to be desired. So, I suspect that the likes of Spurs and Chelsea would have cooled their interest in the 24-year-old.

The Times have claimed that Sporting Lisbon are plotting a January move to re-sign Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur.

Dier has not played a single minute so far this season and has even been left out of the matchday squad on a few occasions, but Ange Postecoglou explained last week that the reason for the omission was that the centre-back was dealing with some niggles (Football.London).

The Spurs boss further explained that he had not had any conversations with the 29-year-old, and he is in the same boat as the other players.

Sporting Lisbon are eyeing an Eric Dier reunion

The Times have now claimed that Sporting have internally discussed the idea of bringing the Tottenham man back to Lisbon.

With the England international’s contract ending next summer, it is said that the Portuguese club could make a reduced offer for the player in January.

The report asserts that Dier, who came through the ranks of Sporting’s academy, has a good relationship with the club’s current president, Frederico Varandas, and is keen on the idea of playing abroad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs will likely be happy to sell Dier for a cut-price fee in January, given that he looks set to leave on a free next summer. So, if the 29-year-old is open to returning to Sporting, I do not see Tottenham standing in his way.

According to the print edition of O Jogo (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to entertain the possibility of re-signing Marcus Edwards.

Edwards, who came through the ranks of the Spurs academy, has developed impressively since his switch to Sporting Lisbon and has emerged as one of the spearheads of Ruben Amorim’s side.

O Jogo claim that the 24-year-old’s progress is being followed by several clubs across Europe, including Tottenham.

Tottenham are still looking at Marcus Edwards

In fact, it is alleged that Spurs ‘recently’ made contact over the winger’s availability but Sporting president Frederico Varandas made it clear to the North London club that the player is for sale.

The report points out that Tottenham would get a 35 per cent discount on the price for Edwards, owing to a clause that was inserted when he left the Lilywhites in 2019.

The outlet explains that while Spurs initially had a 50 per cent sell-on clause, they gave up 15 per cent as part of the deal to bring Pedro Porro from Jose Alvalade Stadium to N17 back in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

Edwards seems like a much better fit for Ange’s style of play than Conte’s. Given that he is homegrown and the fact that we have a 35 per cent sell-on clause, I would not be surprised if Tottenham make another approach for the winger in January or next summer.

O Jogo have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to keep an eye on Sporting Lisbon attacker Pedro Goncalves.

Goncalves has arguably emerged as one of the best-attacking talents in the Portuguese top-flight, with the versatile wide-forward, who can also play as a number eight or a ten, finishing the 2022-23 season with 20 goals and 15 assists to his name.

Many will be scratching their heads as to why one of Europe’s big hitters did not sign the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham are keeping an eye on Pedro Goncalves

That might have to do with the player’s substantial release clause, with O Jogo now reporting that it stands at €80m (£68.8m).

The report reveals that despite the closure of the transfer window, several Premier League clubs, including Spurs, Liverpool and Newcastle United are continuing to observe Goncalves closely.

However, the publication adds that it is Aston Villa who are the ‘most persistent’ with their interest in the Sporting star, having had a proposal for the player knocked back recently.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs know from the Pedro Porro deal that Sporting are notoriously difficult to negotiate with. The Portuguese club would likely demand close to Goncalves’ release clause, which is why I do not expect Tottenham to get involved in the bidding war, particularly after Brennan Johnson’s arrival.

The Spaniard has had difficult first six months in North London, having played under three different managers in the form of Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason, and will now play under his fourth in Ange Postecoglou.

Although doubts have been raised about Porro’s defending, the 23-year-old has shown glimpses of his exceptional quality going forward, having scored three times and picked up three assists in 15 Premier League appearances so far (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham will pay exactly £38.4m for Pedro Porro

Sporting have now officially confirmed that they will receive €40m (£34.2m) from Tottenham for the right-back in addition to the €5m (£4.2m) loan fee they paid in January, thus bringing the total cost of the operation to £38.4m.

Their statement read (as relayed by Football.London): “Sporting SAD reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the temporary transfer of player Pedro Porro, until the end of the season 2022/2023, for the sum of 5m euros.

“The agreement includes the option to permanently acquire the player’s sporting rights, by the amount of 40m euros, which can be exercised by Tottenham or by Sporting with effect from the 1st of July 2023 and consequent definitive assignment of the player to Tottenham.

“The value of the solidarity mechanism due to third-party clubs will be supported by approximately 95% by Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ryan Mason came up with a creative solution to maximise Porro’s attacking qualities while also reducing his need to defend by employing a formation that shifted from a back five to a back four in possession.

I do not expect Postecoglou to veer away from his tried and tested back four with inverted full-backs, which is not a system that Porro naturally fits into.

So, it will be interesting to see how the Australian uses the 23-year-old.

According to A Bola, Aston Villa have now reached out to Sporting Lisbon regarding rumoured Tottenham target Pedro Goncalves to try and understand the conditions that would have to be met to sign the attacking midfielder.

Goncalves has been one of the standout players in Portuguese football this season, having scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists across all competitions in 2022-23 (Trasnfermarkt).

The print edition of Record (24/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) reported two weeks ago that Spurs and Aston Villa were set to go head to head for the versatile midfielder, who can also operate on either flank.

The report asserted that it is ‘known’ both the Premier League clubs are willing to ‘take a step ahead’ for the 24-year-old this summer.

Villa make the first move for Goncalves

If A Bola’s latest update is to be believed, it is the Villans who have now made the first move, with the report asserting that the Midlands club have had their eye on Goncalves since 2020.

The publication reveals that when Unai Emery’s men asked Sporting about the fee it would take to sign the midfielder, the Portuguese side informed the Premier League club that they would have to meet the player’s €80m (£70.7m) release clause.

This is because the Lisbon giants owe Goncalves’ former club, Famalicao, 50 per cent of any fee they receive for the Portugal international.

Spurs Web Opinion

Goncalves is arguably the most impressive of the list of attacking midfielders that Tottenham have been linked with over recent weeks, including the likes of James Maddison and Daichi Kamada.

However, the 24-year-old also seems like the most expensive out of the bunch and Sporting are certainly not easy to negotiate with as Spurs found out during the Pedro Porro talks.

The Portuguese coach is alleged to have recently met with an unnamed agent to discuss a move to England, with the talks said to have left his ‘mouth watering’ and increased the chances of him departing Jose Alvalade Stadium this summer.

The report explains that although Amorim had planned on remaining at Lisbon following his discussions with the Sporting board, the temptation of competing in the Premier League and a considerably higher salary could now sway him.

The outlet explains that the 38-year-old’s current contract at Sporting has a release clause of €20m (£17.2m), which can be activated by foreign clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Among the various coaches that we have been linked with, one can argue that Amorim’s tactics would be the best fit for the current Spurs squad.

However, for the amount of talent that Sporting have in their ranks, they have underperformed considerably in the Portuguese top flight this season, which might make Tottenham think twice about a move for the 38-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Thursday that Paris Saint-Germain had entered the race for the 22-year-old’s signature and that the Ligue 1 giants had already spoken to the player’s entourage as well as to Sporting Lisbon about a summer deal.

Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna then took to social media to reveal that PSG were now set to trigger the Uruguayan’s £52.1m release clause while Chelsea and Newcastle United had also expressed a willingness to do the same.

A Bola have now also backed up the claim regarding the Parisian’s willingness to meet Ugarte’s release clause but the publication adds that Tottenham and Aston Villa could be their main challengers.

The report states that among the clubs in England, the Villans and Spurs are now ‘leading the way’ and assert that it now looks ‘increasingly inevitable’ that the Sporting midfielder will leave the Jose Alvalade Stadium this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs might have a hard time convincing Ugarte to join, given that we do not have Champions League football to offer.

However, the one thing that could help the North London club in their pursuit of the midfielder is if we appoint Ruben Amorim as our head coach, which has now emerged as a possibility once more.

Reports out of Portugal suggest Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are now ‘shoulder to shoulder’ in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

The 22-year-old is one of the most highly-rated players in the Portuguese league, but a move to England this summer could potentially be on the cards.

Champions League

(Photo by Kristian Skeie – UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images)

Manuel Ugarte has been impressive across 47 appearances for Sporting Lisbon this season, including displays against Tottenham in the Champions League (Transfermarkt).

A report from O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) linked the player with a move to Spurs as the North London side look to add to their midfield roster.

Liverpool were also thought to be circling the player (Record). According to Fabrizio Romano, there are three Premier League clubs interested in the Uruguayan star, whose release clause of €60 million is likely to be the fee required to prise him away from his current club.

Now, the latest from the newspaper A Bola (24/05/23 – via SportWitness) claims the race for Ugarte’s signature this summer is heating up as Aston Villa and Tottenham battle it out.

Apparently, Villa “tried to take the lead” in the hunt for Ugarte but Tottenham “nearly immediately counter-attacked” and levelled the playing field once more.

It is thought the two clubs are now “shoulder to shoulder” when it comes to the contest to sign Ugarte.

The outlet claims the situation should be resolved shortly after the end of the season, and that negotiations are now “very advanced”  and close to a conclusion.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the fact we are likely to miss out on European football next season, with Villa above us in the league, I can’t imagine Ugarte picking us over them if it comes down to it.

Ugarte would probably get just as much game time at Villa, if not more, too, so I find it difficult to see a future where we win this race.

The Daily Mail even revealed on Monday morning that Slot is expected to express his intention to leave to the Feyenoord hierarchy this week, with a formal approach from Spurs expected before the end of this week.

This was also backed up by Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel, with the journalist stating that the Dutchman has emerged as the ‘big favourite’ for the job, even though other names, including Amorim, are still on Tottenham’s shortlist.

If Record’s latest update is to be believed, Ruben Amorim does not expect to replace Antonio Conte at the helm at Spurs.

The publication states that the Portuguese coach has now informed his squad that he plans to remain at the Jose Alvalade Stadium next season.

Spurs Web Opinion

This ties in with Romano’s claim that even sources close to the likes of Amorim and Luis Enqirue believe that Slot is now the favourite to become Tottenham boss.

Unless something drastic happens over the coming week, it now appears like the Dutchman is nailed on to be the next Spurs head coach.

The print edition of Correio da Manha (17/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) has claimed that officials from Tottenham will travel to Portugal this weekend, with the N17 club said to have their eye on Ruben Amorim and two Sporting Lisbon players.

The report states that representatives from Spurs are expected to attend Sporting Lisbon‘s big derby against Benfica on Saturday.

Ruben Amorim

(Photo by Joao Rico/DeFodi Images via Getty Images)

One of the main reasons is thought to be that the Lilywhites want to take a closer look at the Lions’ ‘team dynamics’ as Ruben Amorim remains on their wishlist to replace Antonio Conte.

In addition, Tottenham are also expected to run the rule over their former player, Marcus Edwards, as well as winger Pedro Goncalves.

The publication states that Tottenham are aware that they need to meet the release clause of all three to prise them away from Sporting, with Amorim’s standing at €20m (£17.3m), Edwards’ at €60m (£52.1m) and Goncalves’ at €80m (£69.5m).

Interestingly, the report makes no mention of Manuel Ugarte, who has also been heavily linked with a move to Spurs over recent months (O Jogo – 29/04/23 via Sport Witness).

Spurs Web Opinion

It is worth remembering that Tottenham still have a 35 per cent sell-on clause on Marcus Edwards, despite giving up a percentage of that during the negotiations for Pedro Porro in January.

Signing a quality, homegrown player on a discount is something that might well appeal to the Spurs hierarchy, given that we need attacking reinforcement to replace Lucas Moura and Arnaut Danjuma.

The 22-year-old has impressed many across 46 appearances in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt), including some top performances in the Champions League and Europa League.

His time in Portugal looks set to come to an end, however, as multiple clubs have been linked with the young star. Spurs are among the reported admirers for Ugarte, as reported by O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness).

Liverpool are also thought to be circling the player and a report from Record claimed the Reds had become the frontrunner in the race for his signature.

Journalist Neil Jones thinks otherwise, though, suggesting Jurgen Klopp has no intention of moving for Ugarte.

Now, Romano has a new update on the status of the coveted central midfielder, as he shared on his Twitter page that the player looks set for a summer move with a fee of €60 million potentially required to prise him away from Portugal.

He said: “Jorge Mendes is taking care of Manuel Ugarte’s future.

“Talks will continue with Premier League clubs ahead of summer move, very concrete possibility.

“There’s interest from three Premier League clubs but no agreement with any team yet.

“The race is open. Release clause: €60m.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Manuel Ugarte is a brilliant talent and could forge a perfect partnership with his compatriot Rodrigo Bentancur in the Spurs midfield.

There will be competition for his signature, but we seem to have a decent relationship with Sporting Lisbon which could hopefully give us the advantage. His fee is high, but it’s a fair price to pay for such a promising young player.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has expressed his willingness to replace Antonio Conte as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Times.

It emerged a few days ago that Julian Nagelsmann, who previously seemed to be Tottenham’s number one target (Football Insider), is no longer in the running for the role as the North London club decided that he is not a good fit for their project (Evening Standard).

The Times has now claimed that after the decision on the German, Spurs are now ‘keeping their options open’ as they continue to study various candidates.

The publication claims that the Lilywhites are looking for a young, up-and-coming manager in the mould of Mauricio Pochettino in the hope that the appointment would have a similar impact to what the Argentine did when he arrived in 2014.

The report states that one person who fits that bill is Amorim, with Spurs said to have made contact with the Portuguese coach regarding the vacancy. In fact, The Times asserted that the 38-year-old has expressed interest in leaving his role at Jose Alvalade Stadium to take over at N17.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on what various outlets have reported over the last few weeks, it does not appear as if there is one leading contender for the role at the moment.

Tottenham and Daniel Levy are seemingly focussed on getting their sporting director appointment right and perhaps want to task the new man with the job of finding Conte’s replacement.

The print edition of O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) claimed two weeks ago that Tottenham are expected to push ahead with a move for the player once they have a new head coach in place.

The report added that Sporting expect the midfielder to leave after failing in their efforts to tie him down to a new deal, with the 22-year-old’s contract said to have a release clause of €60m (£52.6m) in his current contract.

However, over the last few days, Liverpool seem to have stepped up their efforts to sign Ugarte, with Record reporting this week that the Reds have now emerged as the front-runners for the Uruguayan’s signature.

His agent has now confirmed that there are already several offers on the table for the player and that a final decision on the destination is yet to be made.

Chijane told O Jogo (as relayed by talkSPORT): “Liverpool? There is a lot of talk, but it is not the only club, there are others.

“There’s a lot of talk, but I’m still not sure about the club. There are many offers on the table.

“It’s almost certain that he won’t stay, it’s sure he’ll leave. I believe that in 15 days the situation will be resolved.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that several clubs across Europe would have expressed an interest in Ugarte’s services.

Unless Tottenham fill their vacancies (director of football and manager) soon, they risk getting left behind by the likes of Liverpool in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Record (10/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) have revealed that Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has now ‘frozen’ summer signings as he fears that Ruben Amorim could leave the club amidst Tottenham’s interest.

It was Record who reported at the start of last week that Tottenham plan to open a dialogue with Amorim regarding their managerial vacancy, with the 38-year-old said to be willing to hear the North London club’s offer.

The report added that the manager had a release clause of €20m (£17.5m) in his current contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, which can only be triggered by foreign clubs.

The same outlet have now offered an update on Amorim’s future, stating that Sporting had been working on summer transfers for their head coach but have now stopped due to the uncertainty about his future.

It is revealed that Sporting are aware that Amorim is part of a ‘restricted list of candidates’ on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte.

The report adds that the Lilywhites might face competition for the Portuguese coach from Paris Saint-Germain, although the interest of the Parisians is not thought to be strong at the moment.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on the various reports doing the rounds over the last few days, it does appear as if Tottenham are yet to settle on a number one managerial target.

Perhaps the Spurs hierarchy want to appoint a sporting director first before resuming their search for a new head coach.

However, if Record’s latest update is to be believed, it is Liverpool, not Spurs, who are leading the race for the midfielder’s signing, with the Reds having ‘advanced’ their interest over recent days.

The report states that Jurgen Klopp’s men have been watching Ugarte in action recently and are now prepared to make a move.

The Uruguay international’s agents, Jorge Chijane and Jorge Mendes, are expected to arrive in Lisbon this week to speak to Sporting about their client’s future and Liverpool’s interest.

The outlet states that the Reds are the ‘strongest candidates’ for Ugarte as things stand and could even make their opening offer shortly.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Tottenham delay appointing a new sporting director and head coach any further, they risk being left behind in the race for their top summer transfer targets, with the likes of Newcastle and Liverpool seemingly already laying the groundwork to land the likes of Maddison and Ugarte respectively.

The Athletic have revealed that the opinion at Sporting Lisbon was that Pedro Porro needed defensive protection behind him to play at his best.

Porro’s defensive work has come under scrutiny since his move to Tottenham, with the 23-year-old particularly struggling when asked to play as a conventional right-back during the 6-1 drubbing at St James’ Park.

However, the Spaniard has always shown plenty of promise going forward and he was one of Spurs’ most threatening players in the win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, where he had the defensive insurance of Emerson Royal behind him.

The Athletic have now explained that at Porro’s former club, the view was that he could ‘excel’ if he had the right system and payers around him.

It is explained that Ruben Amorim asked the Spaniard to play ‘almost as a winger’ and played extremely disciplined and positionally aware defensive midfielders to cover for him when he forwayed forward.

Spurs Web Opinion

Porro has the attributes to be an excellent wing-back in a side that dominates possession. However, the 23-year-old might struggle to fit in if Tottenham’s next head coach prefers setting up with a back four.

In fact, the characteristics of our current squad are heavily skewed toward playing with a back three, which is something that the club might consider during their managerial search.

Sporting Lisbon are not overly concerned about the prospect of losing manager Ruben Amorim to Tottenham Hotspur, according to Portuguese news outlet A Bola.

Tottenham are currently still in the midst of their search for a new permanent head coach following the exit of Antonio Conte in late March which came after his brutally honest assessment of his squad.

The report claims that Amorim is fully focused on the job at hand at Sporting and has been planning for next season for some time.

The Evening Standard reported last week that the 38-year-old is under consideration for the vacancy in north London along with Xabi Alonso, while contact has already been made with Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann.

Tottenham know all too well how difficult it can be to negotiate with Sporting following the protracted transfer of Pedro Porro in January and would once again have to step up to the table should they wish to free Amorim of his contract.

There is a release clause of €20m (£17.5m) in his current contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, which can be triggered only by foreign clubs, however, it will reportedly be slashed by 25 per cent to £13.25m (€15m) at the end of the season (Guardian).

SpursWeb Opinion

While Amorim has done a decent job during his stint at Sporting, he would certainly not be the first choice of many Tottenham fans with Nagelsmann, Enrique and even Arne Slot currying favour among the fanbase.

Sporting are likely to miss out on Champions League football next season with Benfica, Porto and Braga all ahead of them in the table.

It is explained that the North London club’s hierarchy are planning to speak to the Portuguese coach about their managerial vacancy with the Sporting boss said to be open to the switch.

The report added that his contract contains a release of €20m (£17.5m), which can be triggered only by foreign clubs this summer.

The same publication has now offered an update on Amorim’s future, claiming that he is ‘willing to listen’ to all the arguments that Tottenham put forth and that his future remains ‘open’.

However, it is explained that the 38-year-old is not getting carried away by Spurs’ interest and is continuing to plan for the future at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

It is alleged that Sporting are not too fussed by Tottenham’s interest as the club have a ‘frank relationship’ with Amorim.

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like these will merely be exploratory talks but I suspect that Amorim would be more than happy to take the Tottenham job if it is offered to him.

However, I do not see the Portuguese coach being among the first four or five names on the North London club’s shortlist.

According to the print edition of Record (04/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Ruben Amorim has asked Tottenham target Manuel Ugarte to remain at Sporting Lisbon for one more year.

The report states that Amorim has told Ugarte to continue at the club for the 2023-24 season and make a big move next summer instead as the coach believes the player is crucial to the team.

However, it is explained that the interest in the midfielder is continuing to grow and that his agent is expected to have ‘busy days’ soon.

In fact, Ugarte’s representative, Jorge Chijane, is expected to arrive in Lisbon next week to discuss his client’s future and talk about the various ‘market solutions’.

The report adds that Spurs are one of the clubs who have ‘promised’ to ‘materialise intentions’ for the Uruguay international this summer but it is said that the player’s €60m (£52.4m) release clause is considered excessive by the North London club.

Spurs Web Opinion

Amorim might have asked Ugarte to stay at Sporting for one more season but the interesting sub-plot to this is the fact that Amorim himself is rumoured to be a target for Spurs.

If the Portuguese coach is appointed as Tottenham’s next head coach, one can expect Ugarte to follow him to N17.
