Tottenham Hotspur could battle London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for the signing of Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, and now, his manager Arne Slot has admitted his player could be on the move in January.

Many expected Tottenham to sign a new striker during the summer, given the high-profile departure of Harry Kane. The England captain left the club for Bayern Munich, leaving Spurs with a big goalscoring void to fill.

Spurs did not move for a new starting forward in the summer, however, with youngster Alejo Veliz the only signing in that department.

As it stands, Heung-min Son and Richarlison have stepped up to the plate and have contributed attacking returns to help Spurs remain unbeaten in the league so far this season.

However, that has not stopped the club from being linked with a number of new attackers as eyes already start to turn to the January transfer window.

Santiago Gimenez to leave Feyenoord in January?

It seems Feyenoord forward, Santiago Gimenez has been watched by scouts from Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea of late (90Min).

Now, his boss, Arne Slot, has spoken on the matter of that January transfer window and whether he can keep hold of his star striker.

He told ESPN (27/09/2023): “He is doing well. That cannot be denied. The great thing about Feyenoord is that, last summer, we were able to spend money on replacements. So we have a broad bench, also in case one leaves later.

“It is not yet January. I do not know whether [Gimenez] is planning to leave in January. But you never know. In any case, we already have a very good striker in [Ayase] Ueda.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Santiago Gimenez is on fire for Feyenoord right now and his attacking returns are the kind of numbers that will no doubt make big clubs pay attention. I would be pretty happy to see Spurs making a move for this player, and I think he would be a great fit for our system.

Ange Postecoglou has a reputation for being very honest and very funny, and he has done so once again when revealing his theory for how he managed to bag the Tottenham Hotspur job.

Tottenham had been searching for a new permanent manager since parting ways with Antonio Conte in March of this year, and it took more than three months to finally arrive at the appointment of Ange Postecoglou.

Since the Australian took over the top job at Spurs, the club has seen a remarkable transformation. The players appear far happier and are performing on the pitch, while supporters are now feeling much more positive with the way their side is playing, too.

Postecoglou was not the only man in the running for the Spurs job, however. Feyenoord coach Arne Slot was apparently very close to taking the job, before he chose to sign a new deal with the Dutch champions (The Athletic).

A report from 90Min just after Postecoglou was given the job, revealed he was third in line for the role. Julian Nagelsmann and Slot were thought to be above him in the pecking order.

Postecoglou doesn’t mind not being first choice

Speaking to Gary Lineker for Football Focus (via The Athletic), Postecoglou has given an honest assessment of that situation, and insists he doesn’t mind that he wasn’t the top pick for the job.

He said: “In both jobs [Celtic and Spurs] no one will come out and say it but I think I was the last man standing for both of them.” The 58-year-old laughs, before adding: “They got rejected by a fair few and I ended up being the only one left. Which is OK, I’ll take that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

He may not have been first choice in the club’s eyes, and I will be the first to admit he wasn’t my first choice either, but what do I know? It’s early days, but Ange Postecoglou seems to be the perfect man for Spurs and could end up being the best thing to happen to this club in a very long time.

Feyenoord’s technical director Dennis te Kloese has said that he hopes Arne Slot is once again a wanted man next summer as that means the Eredivisie side will have done well again this season.

Tottenham seem to have hit the jackpot with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, who has brought the feel-good factor back to N17 with the style of play he has implemented and the messages he has delivered to the media.

It is fair to say that at the moment, Spurs fans would not swap Postecoglou for any other manager but there was certainly some fortune in the way the Australian ended up at the North London club.

The Lilywhites were turned down by Slot, who chose to sign a new contract at De Kuip (The Athletic) before the Premier League side decided to turn their attention to Postecoglou instead.

Te Kloese is hopeful that the Dutch coach’s decision to turn down Tottenham will prove to be the right one.

Spurs wanted Arne Slot and Dennis te Kloese

He told 1908.nl: “We hope that his choice (Slot to stay) turns out well. To be honest, I hope we end up in the same position because that means we’re going to have a good year.”

1908.nl also assert that it was not just Slot who Spurs wanted but they also explored a move to appoint Te Kloese as their new sporting director.

When the publication asked the Feyenoord director about that, he responded: “I had no interest in going anywhere else. Personally, I don’t think it’s a moment to think about anything else.

“My family is used to the Netherlands very well. Now is not the time. Interest from Tottenham or another club or organisation is of course pleasing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There was considerable outrage on social media when Tottenham walked away from the Slot deal and turned their attention to Postecoglou.

Levy and the club deserve credit for sticking to their guns instead of getting influenced by the embarrassing #NoToAnge movement.

Rijnmond editor-in-chief Ruud van Os has admitted that the Dutch publication jumped the gun to report that Arne Slot’s move to Tottenham was a done deal even though it was not.

At one point in the summer, it seemed as if Slot was nailed on to become the next Tottenham head coach, with reports indicating that Feyenoord were resigned to losing their boss to the Premier League side (Football Insider).

Arne Slot

However, the move never materialised, with some publications suggesting that it fell through as a result of the Lilywhites refusing to pay the £20m compensation that the Eredivisie club wanted (talkSPORT).

Other outlets postulated at the time that Slot may have never wanted the job in the first place and could have simply been using Spurs’ interest to secure a more lucrative contract at De Kuip (The Athletic).

We will perhaps never truly know the circumstances behind why the move fell through but things seem to have worked out quite well for Tottenham, who appear to have struck the jackpot with Ange Postecoglou.

Dutch publication went too early on Slot to Spurs

Van Os has now opened up on Rijnmond’s decision to publish the Slot to Spurs story, admitting it damaged their credibility.

He wrote in his recent column (as translated by Sport Witness): “We consider journalistic reliability enormously important, especially at a time when facts are under pressure.

“That is also why we are always cautious about bringing rumours. We do, of course, always want to bring important news as soon as possible.

“That is why we had a report ready in our editorial system about Slot’s departure. Through human error, it appeared.

“That was hugely disappointing, especially for our Feyenoord watchers, who had nothing to do with it. We immediately noticed that this damaged our credibility. It dented the relationship with Feyenoord and our audience.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The journalists who report on football transfer news are under constant pressure to be the first to break a story, given the click-based revenue system that outlets are dependent on these days.

The system thus constantly encourages reporters to put out stories before fully verifying them and doing their due diligence. However, having said that, there are still a lot of great journalists who do not put out information unless it is verified by multiple independent sources.

Following his treble-winning season with Celtic, Postecoglou was announced by Tottenham yesterday and looks set to bring an attacking brand of football back to N17.

Some Spurs fans might wonder how far down the pecking order the Celtic boss was, given the sheer number of managers who have been linked with the hot seat in N17 over the last few months.

Naglesmann and Slot were failed to be convinced over Spurs job

90 min have suggested that the Australian was the third name on Tottenham’s wishlist when Conte departed, behind both Nagelsmann and Slot.

The publication claims that Spurs ‘failed to convince’ the German that the role was the right fit for him and following Slot’s decision to stay at Feyenoord, they turned their attention to Postecoglou.

This is of course different to Tottenham’s version of events, with the club allegedly stating last month that they simply did not see Nagelsmann as the right fit for the job (Evening Standard).

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think it was merely Naglesmann rejecting Spurs or vice versa, but rather a combination of the two.

I suspect that when Tottenham realised that they had to convince the German to take the job (as they had to do with Conte), they probably realised that it would not be the right fit and that they would rather hire someone who was keen on the role.

I think that is understandable as the last thing that the club needed was another manager who thought the job was beneath him and he was doing Spurs a favour by being here.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to unveil Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, but the club had also looked at Vincent Kompany, Luis Enrique, and Ruben Amorim before reaching their decision.

After more than two months of searching for Antonio Conte’s permanent replacement, it appears Tottenham have found their man in the form of Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Talks between the North London club and the Australian manager are believed to have occurred in the wake of Celtic’s Scottish Cup win on Saturday and Postecoglou is now thought to have said ‘yes’ to Spurs (Football Insider). Fabrizio Romano has given the move his ‘here we go’ seal of approval.

Many names had come and gone in Tottenham Hotspur‘s arduous search for a new full-time coach. A worrying number of candidates actually distanced themselves from the role by committing to their current club.

With the hunt seemingly over, pending official confirmation, it’s worth looking back at the various candidates who were believed to be in the running at different times.

A report from The Times details Tottenham’s process over the last couple of months and lists some of the names who could have filled the vacancy.

Arne Slot decided to stick with Feyenoord rather than move to North London, and speculation linking Julian Nagelsmann to the role ultimately led to nothing.

Meanwhile, Tottenham “also had an interest” in Burnley boss Vincent Kompany before he agreed a new deal with the Clarets.

Spurs are also thought to have spoken with Luis Enrique. However, the discussion with the out-of-work Spaniard did not lead to anything meaningful.

Sporting Lisbon’s Rúben Amorim was also considered, but there were “concerns” over the “counterattacking style” of play he favours.

Spurs Web Opinion

Out of the options that didn’t work out there, I think Luis Enrique is one we may regret passing up on. He’s a manager who revitalised a stagnant Spain side and has the experience required to get the best out of Spurs. But, we are firmly behind Postecoglou now.

Arne Slot has insisted that he decided to stay at Feyenoord because he really enjoys the environment at the club and was keen to lead them into the Champions League next season.

Following the collapse of Arne Slot‘s move to Tottenham last week, some publications suggested that the Dutchman was actually keen on taking the job and that the move fell through as a result of the Lilywhites refusing to pay the £20m compensation that Feyenoord wanted (talkSPORT).

Arne Slot

However, other outlets such as 1908.nl have claimed that the Feyenoord hierarchy convinced the 44-year-old that it would be a mistake to leave the club through the back door, given what he has built at De Kuip.

The report added that Feyenoord technical director Dennis te Kloese and in-house lawyer Joris van Benthem allegedly had an hour-long conversation with the Slot last Wednesday.

During these talks, they questioned whether he really wanted to leave ‘in this way’ instead of leading the club into the Champions League next season.

The Dutch coach has now broken his silence on his decision, insisting that he really values what he has at Rotterdam and there is more to life than just competing in a top championship like the Premier League.

When asked about his decision to stay, Slot told The Athletic: “We are going to play in the Champions League, which I’ve never done before as a player and as a coach. The club is in a real good place.

“And I want to work longer on the project to see what comes from that, because you can every time leave somewhere after one or two successful seasons but, in the end, where and what are you then?

“So sometimes you also have to cherish what you have. There’s more to life and to football than only winning a prize.

“It is also the way you work. It’s not always that you come into the place where you can work like we can here and be happy, professional-wise but also family-wise.”

Te Kloese was also asked about Slot’s decision to stay and he remarked that it was not difficult to convince him to do so.

The Feyenoord director said: “Circumstances also played a role. Family circumstances, but also Feyenoord are in the Champions League.

“After the celebrations when we won the title — the scenes last week at the city hall, how many people turned up — the emotion poured into it, you get a feeling this is a real big club. If you take everything into account, you recognise what you have here is not so bad.

“With a nice contract, with a supportive staff, people who all have the best interests of the club in mind — then to convince somebody to step out of that is not an easy thing.

“And I think at some point, probably when everything settled down, he also made up his mind that by doing well here, hopefully (doing well) next year also would open doors.

“And there’s no secret in that there’s a lot of interest in him. There’s a lot of people looking at him and he’s highly regarded.

“So we’re very happy also that he can stay, we consider him as a huge talent and he probably will get an opportunity (elsewhere), but we hope that opportunity stays away a little bit longer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Slot never intended to leave Feyenoord, he would have probably dismissed the speculation linking him to Spurs right from the offset.

The fact that the move collapsed so late suggests that he wanted the job but the North London club were not able to agree on compensation with the Dutch club.

The 44-year-old might have decided to sign a new deal at De Kuip rather than agitating to get himself out of the club.

I get the feeling that Tottenham’s position was that they did not want Slot if he was not keen enough on the job to force himself out of Feyenoord.

The 44-year-old won the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord this season and will now lead the club into the Champions League next season.

Orkun Kokcu was the subject of interest from Tottenham, who were keen to complete a double swoop for Feyenoord’s manager and captain according to Algemeen Dagblad (23/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness).

While Slot is now off the table, there is still a chance Spurs could make a move for the Turkish midfielder, but his manager is not about to let that happen it seems.

Speaking to the Dutch media today (via 1908), Slot said: “I don’t know if you should ask me that question or that can change. You’ll have to put that to him.

“You say, ‘We assume he’s going.’ That’s what you thought of me too and that turned out not to be true either. Orkun is a great player, he can handle a higher level of quality.

“But yes, we will also be active at a higher level as Feyenoord. At least in Europe. So a great opportunity for him as well. Yes, I will do everything I can to try to keep him, that seems clear to me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Slot had come to Spurs I think the Kokcu move would have been a no-brainer, but there’s no chance he is coming to us now without his manager.

He has Champions League football to look forward to now, so why would he leave all that behind to join a club in disarray?

1908.nl have now explained that Spurs ‘dropped out at an early stage’ on Wednesday as they found the compensation Feyenoord were demanding to be too high, with the Lilywhites thus leaving Slot to do the heavy lifting if he wanted to leave De Kuip.

Feyenoord manager Dennis te Kloese and in-house lawyer Joris van Benthem allegedly then had an hour-long conversation with the 44-year-old on Wednesday where they questioned whether he really wanted to leave ‘in this way’ instead of leading the club into the Champions League next season.

The report states that Slot then spoke to his family about it before sleeping on Feyenoord’s contract offer on Wednesday night.

The former AZ Alkmaar boss was reportedly clear on Thursday morning that he wanted to remain in Rotterdam and informed his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, of the same.

Spurs Web Opinion

So, it does appear as if Tottenham would have got their hands on Slot if they had paid the compensation demanded by Feyenoord.

However, at the same time, it seems like the Dutchman was not so keen on jumping ship to the Premier League club that he wanted to burn his bridges at Feyenoord in order to do so.

Arne Slot has admitted that he has been speaking to clubs abroad over recent weeks but insisted that he had decided by Tuesday that he will remain at Feyenoord.

Until Thursday morning, it seemed like only a matter of time before Slot is announced as the next Tottenham head coach, with reports indicating until then that Feyenoord were resigned to losing their head coach to Spurs (Football Insider).

However, the Dutchman did a U-turn and announced yesterday that he will remain at De Kuip (Dan Kilpatrick), which came as a shock to Spurs fans.

Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan told talkSPORT yesterday that although Slot had his heart set on a move to North London, Feyenoord decided to dig their heels in to ensure he stays.

He suggested that the Eredivisie Champions were demanding £20m in compensation for the 44-year-old and his assistants, which Tottenham refused to pay.

Slot has now revealed that he did speak to an overseas club but insisted that the team in question never made a formal approach to Feyenoord.

When asked which club spoke to, he said in his press conference (via the Dutch club’s official YouTubechannel): “I won’t name them out of respect for them.

“Dennis te Kloese [Feyenoord director] deserves credit for everything he’s doing for the club, but the only person responsible for staying here is me. I never had an agreement with any club, no club officially reported their interest to Feyenoord.”

Earlier today, Feyenoord confirmed that Slot has signed a new contract until 2026

Spurs Web Opinion

It seems like the deal was perhaps not as advanced as some reports were suggesting over the last few days if it is true that Tottenham did not even open talks with Feyenoord.

It sounds by all accounts as if Spurs wanted Slot’s representatives to negotiate a reasonable compensation, which they failed to do.

The Daily Mail have now revealed that Graham Potter has once again emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur after the club’s pursuit of Arne Slot collapsed on Thursday.

Now that Arne Slot looks set to stay in Feyenoord, it appears as though Tottenham are back to square one in their search for a new head coach.

Since the news of the Dutchman’s decision emerged yesterday, multiple outlets have suggested that Tottenham could now turn to Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou (Independent) while Luis Enrique and Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim have also been mooted as potential options (The Athletic).

The Times even suggested yesterday that the North London club could consider reigniting their interest in Julian Nagelsmann after ending talks with the German two weeks ago.

The Mail have now alleged that along with the aforementioned names, Potter has now emerged as an option for the North London club.

The 48-year-old has been out of work since being dismissed by Chelsea at the start of April and Daniel Levy had previously tried to appoint him back in 2021 before eventually settling for Nuno Espirito Santo (90 min).

Spurs Web Opinion

Potter’s struggles s at Chelsea do not mean he has suddenly become a bad coach but the 48-year-old did seem to have a hard time coping with the pressure of the job at Stamford Bridge, which might put off Tottenham.

In addition, the optics of hiring another manager who has failed at the West London club would not be great for Spurs, which is why I would be surprised if the Lilywhites pursue the English coach.

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham are perceived by some as a manager’s graveyard, which is part of the reason why the club are finding it difficult to attract top coaches.

Following the collapse of Arne Slot‘s move to Spurs, the publication has dug into why it is that the North London club is not as lucrative a destination for top managers as it once was.

The report reveals that various sources in the game have suggested that the job is perceived as a poisoned chalice, with some viewing the club as a ‘manager’s graveyard’ after seeing both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte fail in the role recently.

The outlet adds that the sense of uncertainty over Harry Kane‘s future also makes it a tricky job for managers to take up as it would be challenging to build a team without knowing whether the striker is going to leave in the next 12 months.

Additionally, The Athletic reveal that some managerial candidates such as Julian Nagelsmann were put off by the uncertainty regarding the structure at the club due to the fact that there is no director of football in place.

Spurs Web Opinion

All these are valid points and would certainly be considered by top managers before taking the job.

However, this article does seem reactionary as the facts are that many top managers still want the Spurs job.

By all accounts, Arne Slot was extremely keen on the role and the move collapsed due to Tottenham not being able to agree on compensation with Feyenoord.

I suspect that the likes of Ruben Amorim and Luis Enrique would also be ready to take the job if it is offered to them.

Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan believes that Arne Slot had his heart set on a move to Tottenham but Feyenoord decided to dig their heels in to ensure he stays.

Until 24 hours ago, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before Arne Slot was announced as the new Tottenham head coach.

Football Insider had reported on Wednesday that Feyenoord were resigned to losing their head coach to Spurs and asserted that the negotiations between the North London club and the 44-year-old were advancing well.

However, out of the blue, the move collapsed on Thursday morning, with the Dutch coach confirming that he will stay put at De Kuip (Dan Kilpatrick).

90 min reported soon after the deal collapsed that Feyenoord demanded compensation of £17.5 for Slot as well as his assistants, which Tottenham had no intention of paying.

Van der Kraan has now claimed that the Eredivisie champions actually demanded £20m, thus stopping Slot from fulfilling his desire of moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The journalist told talkSPORT: “It looked all week like he would join Tottenham Hotspur.

“He was the number one candidate after Xabi Alonso said he wasn’t coming. His agent Rafaela Pimenta was in talks with Tottenham and she made it clear he was happy to come.

“Feyenoord said he was the most popular, best manager we’ve ever had. He’s brought us to the Champions League, we want to keep him and if Tottenham want him they will have to go up to £20million.

“With that in the back of his mind, it was becoming a very difficult situation for the manager. Also, they [Feyenoord] offered him a brand new contract with huge wages.

“Late last night, the manager decided well, if I can’t get out, I’ll sign a new contract here.”

When asked if Slot wanted the Spurs job, Van der Kraan responded: “Absolutely, he was really keen on moving.

“He had given his word to Pimenta to start negotiations to speak to Spurs. He was really enthusiastic about the Premier League, he made that clear.

“This is why it’s a massive turnaround that both parties, Feyenoord and Slot, agreed to sign a new contract and not to go to Spurs. I think deep down in his heart, that’s where he wanted to go [Spurs].”

Spurs Web Opinion

Although it is Feyenoord who seems to have caused the deal to collapse by making unrealistic demands, unfortunately for Tottenham, it will once again be perceived by the public as a failure on their part.

One can argue that Spurs should have just bit the bullet and paid the compensation that Feyenoord were demanding but at the same time, it is important to point out that paying £20m to sign a manager from the Dutch league would have been unprecedented.

TEAMtalk have revealed that the collapse of Arne Slot’s move to Tottenham is now causing panic at Fulham, with the Cottagers said to be concerned that the North London club could come after their head coach.

Soon after Antonio Conte’s sacking back in March, Marco Silva was reported to be one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist to replace the Italian (The Athletic).

Football Insider subsequently reported at the end of April that while Spurs did explore a move for the Portuguese coach, they did not make any concrete approach for him.

TEAMtalk have now suggested that Fulham are concerned that Tottenham could once again turn their gaze to Silva, who has guided the West London club to an impressive tenth-placed finish this season.

The publication states that with the 45-year-old set to enter the final year of his contract this June, the Cottagers are now working desperately to tie him down to a new deal.

TEAMtalk also quotes Graeme Bailey about the situation, with the journalist revealing that Fulham is indeed concerned about the fact that their head coach has been linked with the West Ham and Spurs jobs.

Bailey has told the outlet: “Fulham insist they are not worried about Silva and are confident that they are going to tie him down to a new deal.

“However, whilst confidence is there – it cannot be argued they are worried for as long as a new deal goes unsigned.

“They know West Ham are looking at alternatives to David Moyes and Silva is on their list. The Portuguese has also been talked about at Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Spurs would have ever really seriously considered a move for Silva.

With the Slot deal having collapsed, it appears likely that the North London club would turn their attention to one of Ange Postecoglou, Ruben Amorim or Luis Enrique.

Jack Pitt-Brooke and Charlie Eccleshare have suggested via The Athletic that Arne Slot might have simply been using Tottenham’s interest to get a more lucrative contract at Feyenoord.

Until Thursday morning, it seemed like Arne Slot‘s move to Spurs was inevitable, with reports indicating that Feyenoord had become resigned to losing their head coach to the North London club (Football Insider).

However, the situation changed suddenly, with the Dutch coach now thought to have agreed on a new contract at De Kuip (Fabrizio Romano).

90 min reported soon after the deal collapsed that Feyenoord demanded compensation of £17.5m for Slot as well as his assistants, which Tottenham had no intention of paying.

Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan also suggested something similar to talkSPORT, claiming that even though the 44-year-old had his heart set on a move to Spurs, Feyenoord dug their heals in and demanded considerable compensation in an effort to keep him at the club.

However, Pitt-Brook and Eccleshare have proposed an alternative ‘theory’, remarking that talks might have not been as far along as reported by some outlets.

Instead, they state that Slot’s main goal from the start could have been to leverage Spurs’ interest to earn a bigger contract with his current employers.

Spurs Web Opinion

We might perhaps never know for sure why exactly the deal collapsed but it does appear as if Slot did want to move to Spurs but the North London club did not want to be held to ransom by Feyenoord, who were, in turn, determined to do all they can to stop the Dutchman from leaving.

As Tottenham appear to turn their attention back to Ange Postecoglou after their pursuit of Arne Slot collapsed, The Times have now revealed that the North London club previously had concerns about the Celtic boss’ age.

Until 24 hours ago, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before Slot takes over as the next Spurs head coach (Football Insider) but the deal collapsed this morning as the Dutchman confirmed his intention to remain at Feyenoord (Dan Kilpatrick).

Following the latest development, The Independent’s Miguel Delaney took to social media to state that Postecoglou has now emerged as one of the candidates to replace Antonio Conte.

The journalist revealed that even though the Celtic boss is one of many names on the club’s wishlist, the Lilywhites are now ‘strongly considering’ him as a candidate.

The Times have explained that Spurs did show interest in Postecoglou prior to accelerating their interest in Slot.

However, the publication suggests that the Tottenham hierarchy chose against making a move for the Australian since they were worried about him being in his late fifties.

(Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images)

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou’s age is not really a concern for me and he does tick a few boxes for Spurs as he plays attacking football and tends to have a very good relationship with his players. He is also a skilled communicator and someone who can bring the fans onside, which is desperately needed at Tottenham.

However, the Scottish top flight is of the same standard as League One, which is why it would be a huge gamble for Spurs to appoint the Australian. There is a big risk that the 57-year-old would end up being out of his depth in the Premier League when competing against the best managers in the world.

To put age into context, Luciano Spaletti has just won the Serie A title with Napoli at the age of 64 and many would love him to walk through the doors in north London.

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot raised concerns over Tottenham Hotspur’s current structure amid discussions over the possibility of succeeding Antonio Conte as head coach, according to The Independent.

The Dutchman became the frontrunner to end Tottenham’s search for a new manager on the back of his impressive work at Feyenoord where he led them to the Eredivisie title ahead of the likes of PSV and Ajax for only the second time this century.

Slot is reported to have had issues with how he would fit into the structure at Tottenham with the club also currently recruiting for a replacement for Fabio Paratici as sporting director.

Paratici resigned as the managing director of football in April after losing an appeal in Italy against his 30-month ban from the game.

The 44-year-old has instead been persuading to remain at Feyenoord for at least another season where he will lead his side into next season’s Champions League while Tottenham are still scrapping it out for a place in the Europa Conference League when they face relegation-threatened Leeds United on Sunday.

Spurs Web Opinion

Slot would have been foolish to risk his growing managerial reputation when there is so much uncertainty with everything at Tottenham Hotspur at present under Daniel Levy.

He is known to demand plenty of control when he is in charge and could have found himself working under a sporting director who he did not see eye-to-eye with in north London.

90 min have revealed that Tottenham’s pursuit of Arne Slot broke down since the Premier League club were not willing to pay the compensation fee that Feyenoord demanded for their head coach.

This morning, Slot himself put an end to the speculation over his future by insisting that he will remain at Feyenoord next season and build on his work at the club.

It has subsequently been reported that the Dutch coach has agreed to sign a new contract at De Kuip, which is expected to be confirmed soon (Fabrizio Romano).

90 min have now explained that Spurs had spoken with Feyenoord to get a deal for Slot over the line but the Eredivisie club had demanded £10m to part ways with their head coach and a further £7.5m for his coaching team, who the 44-year-old refused to leave behind.

That disagreement could not be solved, which is why the talks between the parties eventually broke down.

The outlet adds that Tottenham still hold an interest in Ruben Amorim and Luis Enrique while the likes of Ange Postecoglou, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva, Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter have all been discussed by the club internally.

Slot spoke earlier today confirm his future with Dutch champions, as quoted by the BBC: “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other interest in me,”

“Although I am thankful, my wish is to stay at Feyenoord and continue working on what we created last year.

“There is not – and there has not been – transfer conversation and yesterday’s meeting was exclusively for an extension. All talks with the club have always been only in that sense. Looking forward to next season with Feyenoord.”

Paying around £18m in compensation for a manager is almost unheard of but having said that, given the situation Tottenham find themselves in at the moment, perhaps they should have considered paying the fee.

Not only have they now seemingly missed out on the coach who they deemed to be the best fit for the role but they also have to deal with the negative press that comes as a result of the deal collapsing in its final stages.  Over to you, Daniel Levy

talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has suggested that Arne Slot may have used Tottenham Hotpur’s interest in him to be able to negotiate an improved contract at Feyenoord.

It has widely been reported that one of Daniel Levy‘s priorities this summer is to appoint a manager who plays front-foot, high-intensity football and one who can also nurture young players, with Slot said to tick both boxes (Evening Standard).

Football Insider revealed on Monday that there was willingness from the 44-year-old’s camp, as well as from Tottenham, to get a deal done quickly.

However, things took a turn this morning when Slot confirmed that he wishes to stay at Feyenoord.

Slot said, as quoted by the BBC: “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other interest in me,”

In reaction to the announcement, Crook told talkSPORT: “From the outside looking in,  it looks like Arne Slot has used this interest from Tottenham to be able to negotiate a new contract at Feyenoord.

“Where this leaves Spurs is anybody’s guess.”

Slot is now set to sign a new deal with the Dutch champions with talks having taken place over improved terms yesterday (Fabrizio Romano).

Crook had previously claimed that a deal was expected to advance this week and remarked that he has heard only good things about the kind of football that Slot’s teams play.

The journalist told talkSPORT Breakfast (22/05/23): “It feels like it could be a big week for Tottenham, in terms of their managerial search.

“It’s nearly two months since Antonio Conte was sacked and it looks like Tottenham are finally honing in on a successor.

“The word coming out of Holland is that Arne Slot, the Feyenoord manager, who has just led them to the Dutch title, is very interested in the Tottenham job.

“It’s a bit complicated because he has a release clause in his contract. That doesn’t kick in until next season, so it will need negotiation between Tottenham and Feyenoord. The fee that has been touted is around £6 million.

“Looks like he and Luis Enrique are two of the front runners – Arne Slot looks like he might be the man to replace Antonio Conte.

“I think what Tottenham like about Arne Slot is the style of play. I have heard Dutch football experts on this station, he is very much in the Pep Guardiola mould, so that should get Tottenham fans excited, so I think Arne Slot ticks a lot of boxes.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While there has understandably been plenty of focus on the style of football that Slot’s teams play and this news certainly leaves them with egg on their faces having passed up on both Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino.

The Tottenham board would be keen to appoint a head coach that unites everyone at the club,  the Dutchman has been a popular figure with the players he managed at AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.   Instead, they are now back to the drawing board.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arne Slot has agreed a new contract with Feyenoord during a meeting yesterday amid speculation he was set to become the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

Slot had appeared to be edging closer to replacing Antonio Conte at the helm at Tottenham, with Football Insider reporting on Monday that the negotiations were at an advanced stage and the deal could have been completed this week.

Romano recently confirmed that Slot’s representatives were expected to speak to the Feyenoord hierarchy over the coming hours to establish the conditions for the Dutchman to join Spurs, including the compensation fee that the North London club would be required to pay.

Interestingly, he added that while the 44-year-old is the clear frontrunner, other candidates’ names still remain on the Lilywhites’ wishlist.

Slot has this morning set the record straight by insisting that the scheduled talks which took place yesterday were purely to discuss his contract extension at the Eredivisie champions and had not held any talks about a move elsewhere.

He said as quoted by the BBC: “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other interest in me,”

Romano has now insisted that Slot will now put pen to paper on a new deal at Feyenoord and will not change his mind.

He said on Twitter: Arne Slot will sign a new contract at Feyenoord very soon. The agreement has been reached during yesterday’s meeting and it will be sealed soon.

“Slot decision won’t change. He’s set to stay and won’t join Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We are quickly seeing a repeat of the 2021 managerial search when we ended up with Nuno Espirito Santo.  Tottenham would be aware that they need to appoint a new head coach quickly so that they can finalise their plans for the summer transfer window, however, once again things are dragging on.

At this rate, I would expect to see a new sporting director confirmed before the appointment of a head coach.
