Tottenham Hotspur’s Bryan Gil has been speaking to the Spanish press about the back injury that affected him last season and the decision to undergo surgery this summer.

The young winger has not spent a great deal of time on the pitch for Tottenham since joining in the summer of 2021.

Thus far, Bryan Gil has had to make do with bit-part appearances from the bench for Spurs, and has spent the majority of the last two years out on loan.

After a spell with Valencia at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign, Gil then joined his former club, Sevilla, on loan last term. He made 24 appearances for the Spanish side, scoring two goals and registering three assists (Transfermarkt).

With his loan deal at an end, Gil has returned to North London and is hoping to impress new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Any attempt to do that, however, will have to wait, after the club confirmed the 22-year-old required surgery for a back problem.

Bryan Gil expects to be back from injury soon

Speaking to AS (via Sport Witness) about the injury, his decision to undergo surgery, and when he intends to be back in action, Gil appeared hopeful that the treatment would have the desired effect.

He said: “It was my decision. They recommended that I stop, because sooner or later it would give me problems. I was fit to play, with discomfort, and I wanted to take advantage of my short spell with Sevilla.

“The important thing now is that the doctors have told me that everything has gone well and, in a few weeks, I will be recovered from both discomforts. What I have had operated on has been some discomfort that I was dragging in the pubis.

“But I have made the decision now because I suffered a small fissure in the sacrum that was going to keep me out for a few weeks, so I have taken advantage of this period of sick leave to undergo surgery.”

It sounds like Gil found the perfect opportunity to get the surgery done and hopefully, this will put an end to his injury issues.

If he is staying at Spurs for the season – as appears to be the case – it will be interesting to see how much game time he gets and whether he can make the most of any opportunities he is given.
