French news outlet L’Equipe have revealed that Lyon failed with a deadline-day move to sign Tottenham winger Bryan Gil.

While transfer deadline day did prove to be a busy one for Spurs, the club failed to offload some of their unwanted players before the 11 pm deadline, with Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, and Davinson Sanchez remaining at N17 after the window had slammed shut.

Gil was also linked with a late move away from Hotspur Way, with some Spanish outlets suggesting that Sevilla were keen on re-signing the winger on loan for the remainder of the campaign (ABC Sevilla via Sport Witness).

The 22-year-old, who recently underwent groin injury and has not had an opportunity to feature under Ange Postecoglou as of yet, but did reveal on an Instagram story recently to suggest he is close to returning to action.

Lyon made deadline day move for Bryan Gil

It has now emerged that Lyon failed with a late move for the Tottenham winger on Friday.

The Ligue 1 side signed Chelsea’s Diego Moreira on loan on deadline day but L’Equipe claim that they first explored moves for Gil and Everton’s Demarai Gray before turning their attention to the Blues youngster.

The publication suggests that the deal for the Tottenham man fell through due to ‘financial or timing reasons’.

I was surprised that Tottenham did not loan out Gil, particularly with Brennan Johnson arriving through the door on deadline day. While the Spaniard does have attributes that Postecoglou will like, he is unlikely to get too many opportunities, given the various wide options that the Australian now has at his disposal.
