The Sun have revealed that Antonio Conte simply refused to return to Tottenham to resume his role last month, which is why the club had no choice but to part ways with the Italian.
It did not come as a surprise when Tottenham pulled the plug on Conte’s project on the back of his infamous rant against the players.
However, what was surprising was the club’s decision to hand Cristian Stellini the reins, which backfired spectacularly, with the Italian and the rest of the coaching staff exiting the club this week following the 6-1 thrashing at St James’ Park.
The Sun have now explained that putting Stellini in charge was not Levy’s original plan as he wanted Conte to continue in the role until the end of the season.
However, despite the Spurs chairman’s request, the 53-year-old allegedly refused to resume as head coach, having criticised the players publicly.
The report adds that Conte insisted that he was leaving his role and staying in Italy regardless of what was announced in the club’s statement.

If this is true, this is extremely unprofessional behaviour on Conte’s part.
However, even if the Italian had refused to fulfil his contract, the decision to put Stellini in charge never seemed to make any sense at all.
The obvious decision would have been to call time on the whole project and hand Mason the reins.
