Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are not likely to prioritise signing a number nine in January, with the club expected to put that off until next summer.

Spurs did not move for a centre-forward to replace Harry Kane in the summer and instead chose to sign a versatile attacker in Brennan Johnson, who can play across the front three or even as an attacking midfielder.

Over the last month or so, plenty of reports have suggested that the Lilywhites are one of the clubs, alongside Arsenal and Chelsea, who are eyeing a move for Ivan Toney, who has allegedly informed Brentford of his desire to leave when the transfer window reopens (Daily Express).

Ange Postecoglou’s men also continue to be linked with other number nines, including Feyenoord’s profile marksman Santiago Gimenez (90 min) and Lille’s pacy forward Jonathan David (TEAMtalk).

Spurs will not move for a striker in January

However, Jones has now insisted that Postecoglou is happy with Son Heung-min and Richarlison as his options upfront and that the North London club will look to address the area next summer.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “There is still going to be speculation around whether Tottenham go for an out-and-out striker in the January transfer window and I don’t think they will.

“The signs at the moment from what I’m hearing is that they’re more likely to put that off until the summer because of the way that Son can play and the fact that Richarlison can go through the middle as well.

“I know that there’s been some doubts over Richarlison and that if they had another option there, they have more potential to become title contenders. I just think it’s too early to be talking about Tottenham in that bracket.”

All indications over recent weeks are that Alejo Veliz has impressed Postecoglou and his coaching staff in training. That could also be part of the reason why the Australian has decided that a new number nine is not a major priority during the upcoming transfer window.
