Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Ryan Mason has been working hard with the Tottenham players on their set-piece routines.

Spurs had plenty of success in set-pieces and deadball situations last season, which is perhaps down to set-piece specialist Gianni Vio.

The Italian left the club this summer and there have certainly been some marked differences in the way that Tottenham take their set-pieces this campaign.

The Lilywhites are taking a lot more short corners and it was one such situation that led to their goal against Luton Town, with James Maddison picking up the ball out wide and leaving a defender for dead before picking out Micky van de Ven, who turning the ball home from close range.

It was the 26-year-old’s fifth assist of the season (to go with his two goals) in eight matches, and Postecolgou admitted that the attacking midfielder can be a deadly weapon if he receives the ball in the right areas.

Ryan Mason has been working on set pieces at Spurs

When asked how impressed he was with Maddison’s performance against Luton, the Australian told Football.London: “Yeah, the way we started he was extremely important – played some great balls though and opened them up with Sonny.

“And then in the second half, we were going to need his clever thinking and outside-of-the-box thinking, and Mase works really hard with the guys on set-pieces and he always says that if it’s on early – get it early.

“An early corner or set piece and you can see Madders’ brain working before they’re fully organised and creates a bit of magic for Micky to score.

“He’s been great but I think he’d be the first to say that that’s done on the back of a lot of hard work from all the guys. He’s allowed to play the game he wants and he has to work hard as well but he’s got guys alongside him making sure he gets the ball in the right areas – making runs for him to do what he does.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The piece of skill from Maddison leading up to the goal was quite sensational. The attacking midfielder showed tremendous balance to go past the defender and still had the composure to pick out Van de Ven inside the box even though he was being closed down.

Ryan Mason has taken to social media to admit that he is enjoying his coaching work under Ange Postecogolou and remarked that Tottenham fans have some ‘exciting times’ to look forward to.

Tottenham confirmed two weeks ago that Mason would be joining Postecoglou’s backroom staff as an assistant coach on the back of his second stint as the club’s interim head coach towards the end of last season.

The 31-year-old has been joined by Matt Wells, Rob Burch Chris Davies and Mile Jedinak in the new-look Spurs coaching team, who have been putting the non-international Tottenham players through their paces at Hotspur Way for the last week.

Earlier this week, Alasdair Gold shed light on how Postecoglou likes to work, revealing on Football.London that the Australian briefs his coaching staff on what he wants them to get across to the players before giving them autonomy on how they chose to relay those messages to the squad.

The journalist added that the coaches are also given individual responsibility for the more intensive development work with certain players, with the 56-year-old keeping a close eye on all the proceedings.

Mason is excited to get started with Ange Postecoglou

Based on Mason’s latest’s Instagram post, it appears like he is certainly enjoying working as part of the new set-up. Here’s what the former Tottenham midfielder posted:

Spurs Web Opinion

The opportunity to work with a diverse set of managers such as Pochettino, Conte and now Postecoglou, would certainly be of huge benefit to Mason in his coaching journey.

These experiences would arguably teach the 31-year-old more than any managerial job in an EFL club can, and he will certainly be ready whenever he does decide to take on the top job.

As preparations begin for the upcoming Premier League campaign, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the press about the backroom staff he has assembled at the club.

We are now approaching one month since Postecoglou was announced as the new Tottenham boss, and it’s been an incredibly positive first month for the Australian.

Already, the 57-year-old has raised the spirits of the disillusioned Spurs fans with exciting new additions to the squad in the form of Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison.

Postecoglou has also promised fans they will be entertained by the football his team plays, which is a tantalising prospect after the dismal efforts of the squad last season.

Behind the scenes, Postecoglou has been hard at work putting together a coaching staff he can trust, with Ryan Mason, Matt Wells, and Rob Burch sticking around, and the additions of Chris Davies and Mile Jedinak.

Postecoglou wants to get it right off the pitch too

Speaking to Football.London about the coaching team he has assembled, Postecoglou stressed the importance of ensuring things are running smoothly off the pitch, as well as on it.

He said: “It’s as much about what we do off the field as what we do on it. Starting with the coaching, which is probably the most important aspect. They’re really bright, talented and ambitious guys. It’s a great mix.

“We’ve got guys who know this football club very well in Ryan, Matt and Rob, even coming through the academy so they know the whole Spurs experience and what it means. So it’s great to have them.

“Then Chris is somebody I’ve followed from afar, an ambitious young guy and Mile I know really well obviously because he was captain of my national team and a determined bloke to bring success wherever he is. I know that success will follow him because he’s been a leader from a very young age.”

On what he and the staff need to do now, Postecoglou added: “The most important thing for me in these early parts is people getting to know me.

“That’s staff members, players, people associated with the club, they need to get to know me, what I’m about. If they get to know me and believe in me, whatever I need to do after that is easier. That’s the first bit.

“It’s a huge organisation and, for me, to allow that to happen means I have to be present in as many areas as I can be in this early part, and that’s what I will try to do, make sure I’m present in every aspect of the football club, so people at least have some exposure to me.

“Beyond that, it’s working with the players. They are the most important people. Players are the most important people in this football club and every football club.

“We have six weeks – how can we prepare these guys to make sure come the first weekend of Premier League football that we’re ready to go?”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ange Postecoglou has put together a strong backroom staff, who have plenty of potential to grow into their roles, too.

The manager’s whole ethos just sounds excellent and has instilled a wave of optimism around the club.

Hopefully, it all works out and Postecoglou can bring us some success.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Chris Davies and Mile Jedinak have joined Spurs as part of Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff while Rob Burch will also return to the club to take his place in the Australian’s backroom team.

It had already been reported that Ryan Mason was set to stay on as part of Postecoglou’s coaching staff at the new Spurs head coach’s request (Football.London).

That has now been confirmed by the club, who reveal that Mason has been appointed as assistant coach, alongside Matt Wells, who worked with the 31-year-old during his spell as the interim head coach towards the end of last season.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham coaching staff

Davies has extensive experience in coaching, having worked as part of the staff at Swansea City, Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City, and he now joins Spurs as the senior assistant coach.

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Jedinak, who played under Postecoglou for the Socceroos, will leave his position as a youth and loan development coach at Aston Villa to join the 57-year-old’s staff at Spurs.

Finally, Burch, who came through the youth ranks at Tottenham and served as the academy goalkeeping coach until 2019, is set to join as the first-team goalkeeping coach.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Postecoglou might have preferred to bring John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan with him for Celtic, the Australian is used to working with a new team at each of his clubs and so, doing the same at Tottenham should not be an issue for the 57-year-old.

Interestingly, there was no mention of whether set pieces coach, Gianni Vio is still part of the staff.

Ange Postecoglou paid his first visit to the Hotspur Way earlier this week and has made an impression at the club’s training base, according to Football.London.

The report reveals that Ryan Mason was one of those who were in attendance to meet with the Australian and was said to have been left impressed by the 57-year-old.

Mason is now expected to remain as part of Postecoglou’s new look backroom team in north London with the 31-year-old having been the subject of interest from other clubs following his second interim spell in charge.

Daniel Levy initially overlooked Mason for the acting head coach role in the wake of Antonio Conte’s exit from Tottenham and instead decided to place his assistant Cristian Stellini in charge.

The Italian left his temporary post with a record of two defeats, a win and a draw in charge of Spurs, with the 6-1 humiliation at Newcastle being the final straw which resulted in Levy turning to Mason for the second occasion.

Mason set to stay as part of Postecoglou’s coaching staff

With Mason reported to have been left impressed by his meeting with Postecoglou it will mean there is still a link between the old regime and the new, with the former midfielder known to command respect among the Spurs dressing room (Football.London).

The Evening Standard claimed earlier this week that Mason was set to meet with Levy to discuss his future having attracted interest from Championship clubs along with some from abroad.

SpursWeb Opinion

Mason has excellent relationships with the likes of Harry Kane and hopefully, the presence of Mason within the coaching team will help the striker to have another reason to remain in north London despite intense speculation about his own future.

It would be a risk for Mason to jump ship at this stage and take on his own management role when there will be plenty he can absorb from Postecoglou before finally making the leap in a year or two.

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to offer Ryan Mason a position within Ange Postecoglou’s new-look coaching staff, however, the former midfielder will first meet with Daniel Levy to discuss his future.

Mason was initially overlooked for the interim head coach position in late March following Antonio Conte’s downfall in the wake of the 3-3 draw at Southampton with the Spurs chairman instead deciding to appoint assistant boss Cristian Stellini to see out the campaign.

Stellini failed to oversee an improvement in results with the team suffering a 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United in April which saw Levy instead turn to Mason for the second time to lead the first team.

Mason had also acted as interim head coach in 2021 following the sacking of Jose Mourinho just days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

The report claims that Mason is attracting interest from elsewhere with at least two Championship clubs keen on him, along with one from Europe and a further club in the Middle East.

The 31-year-old had previously spoken publicly about his interest in becoming Tottenham’s head coach on a permanent basis but did not get the position with Levy instead deciding to bring Postecoglou from Celtic on a four-year deal.

He told the Evening Standard in April: “Obviously I’m ready and if that situation happens it obviously means I have done a good job.

But that is obviously in the future of four five six weeks’ time, the immediate thought is the game on Thursday and the game on Sunday.

Tottenham ended the season in eighth place in the Premier League table and will not feature in European football for the first time in over a decade.

Mason has a decision to make over his Spurs future

Having been overlooked again, Ryan Mason must now decide whether he is prepared to sit in the background once again at Tottenham or take the leap into management at a Championship club to cut his teeth and prove he is ready for a top flight job in a season or two.

A move abroad at this stage would be a risky proposition for the ex-England international and he must pick his next role carefully if he wants to achieve his aim of managing Spurs in the future.

A new report has shed some light on what the future may hold for Ryan Mason, and whether he is likely to stay at Tottenham Hotspur under a new manager or move on and become a head coach elsewhere.

It has been a tumultuous time at Tottenham this season, to say the least. Antonio Conte left the club in a whirlwind at the end of March, and was replaced by his former assistant, Cristian Stellini.

Ryan Mason

(Photo by Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images)

Stellini’s tenure came to an end abruptly after the 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United. He was then replaced by Ryan Mason, who took over as Acting Head Coach until the end of the season.

Although results didn’t really improve under Mason, there was a marked improvement in the attitude and performances of the players. However, it is still increasingly likely a new full-time manager will come in this summer and pick up where the young coach left off.

In a report from The Athletic, it is suggested Mason could still have a future at Tottenham despite the expected arrival of a new manager, but whether he will want to stay or not is a different matter.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is looking likely to be offered the top job at Spurs in the near future (Football Insider).

If that is the case, it is suspected the Australian will not bring his own coaching staff with him, which would mean there would “very much be a vacancy” for Mason.

At present, it is thought “nothing has been decided” on Mason’s future, and the Spurs man is currently taking some time off now the season has concluded.

As for next steps, Mason is set to “weigh up his options” and have a discussion with Daniel Levy about where he fits in at the club.

The report claims Mason “sees himself as a head coach” and suggests that if he were to stay at Tottenham Hotspur beyond this summer, many would be “surprised”.

It is said that clubs in the Championship and across Europe are already showing interest in the young manager ahead of the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would absolutely expect Mason to be in line for a head coach role somewhere soon, and I would not blame him for moving on.

He may be young, but he is ambitious and needs to test himself fully as a manager. I can see him getting a gig in the Championship for sure.

Alasdair Gold has revealed that everyone at Tottenham speaks in glowing terms of the work that Ryan Mason has done behind the scenes, insisting that the improvements he has made will make it easier for the incoming manager.

Ryan Mason‘s second spell in charge as interim head coach did not go well as his first spell two years ago, with the Lilywhites winning just two of his six games at the helm.

Ryan Mason

(Photo by Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images)

Although the former Tottenham midfielder cannot be entirely blamed for those results, given the tumultuous time he took the job, those results likely ended any small chance he had of landing the job permanently.

Gold has now revealed that Mason himself, as well as many at the club now realise that the Tottenham hierarchy are looking beyond him, but the journalist added that there are high hopes at the club about the kind of manager the 31-year-old can become over the next few years.

He said on his YouTube channel: “Ryan Mason signed off on Sunday with the air of a man who knows what he has achieved inside Tottenham, even if it isn’t apparent on the outside.

“The expectation is that he probably isn’t going to get the permanent role. I think there is a feeling of that within the club. I get the sense, he knows that as well.

“There are high hopes he will be in a position to return one day to have that job. It’s a job that he dreams of.

“Everyone I have spoken to inside the club, and this is in various departments, they all say the same thing.

“He has put so many things in place, just in the last few weeks that will really help the next manager to kick on.

“It would make the transition much easier than it would have been had they taken over straight from the Antonio Conte era.

“From what I understand, he has really gone about improving the environment. Bringing departments closer together, who maybe felt neglected and not part of things before. Just getting everyone pulling in the same direction.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Mason certainly said all the right things and conducted himself with dignity in his press conferences rather than shifting blame to others, which was refreshing to see on the back of Mourinho and Conte.

If Postecoglou does get the job, one of the main positives would be the fact that he is also someone who is humble and focuses on the collective rather than on protecting his own image.

Alasdair Gold has said that Harry Kane and several senior Tottenham players would support the idea of Ryan Mason being appointed as the club’s permanent head coach.

Although results have not been as encouraging for Ryan Mason in his second stint as interim coach, the 31-year-old did take over at an extremely tumultuous time and has arguably delivered on his promise of a more attacking approach.

Ryan Mason

(Photo by Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images)

Understandably, the former Tottenham midfielder does not seem to be in contention for the full-time role, with reports over recent days indicating that Ange Postecoglou, Ruben Amorim and Luis Enrique are the top candidates to replace Antonio Conte at the helm (Football Insider).

Some sources have suggested that Postecoglou could be the club’s top target, with The Evening Standard revealing on Wednesday that Spurs are expected to make a move for the Australian after Celtic’s Scottish Cup final on Saturday.

Gold has now said that Mason has made a good impression on the Tottenham players in his short time at the helm and that many would be happy to play for him next season.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I have been told that there are a lot of players that would play for Ryan Mason. They would be very happy if he was manager. I am sure Harry Kane is one of them as well.

“I do think people really underestimate how he is going to become a young top coach.

“I think he is going to go away and be very successful elsewhere, then we will say ‘surely it’s a matter of time before he comes back to be Tottenham’s coach’. I hope that’s true.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It would be unfair to judge Mason based on the handful of matches he has not had much time to work with the squad on the training ground and get his ideas across.

He also took over at a time when the morale was really low and with the team not playing for any major prizes.

So, the 31-year-old could indeed be a really talented coach but unfortunately, Tottenham are at a crossroads at the moment and cannot afford to gamble on him.

More than two months on from Antonio Conte‘s departure, Tottenham do not appear close to finalising a new head coach, with some Spurs fans particularly riled by the fact that the club’s pursuit of Arne Slot collapsed last week.

Understandably, the fans’ anger has primarily been directed at Daniel Levy, with The Daily Mail even reporting that the Spurs chairman has had to change his email address as his inbox has been inundated with complaints from disgruntled fans.

However, Mason pointed to the fact that the 61-year-old has been willing to spend money, insisting that he has been let down by others.

When asked about the criticism aimed at Levy, the interim Spurs head coach told Football.London: “It hurts him, it hurts everyone committed to this club and everyone who really cares and wants this club to be successful.

“One thing I will say is he’s spent money, he’s tried and I just think ultimately he has probably been let down by other people but that’s football.

“That happens and hopefully, we can get things right quickly, make good decisions and it can turn around.”

Mason also suggested that the one silver lining from the club’s struggles this season is that the Tottenham hierarchy now have clarity on the type of direction that they now have to move towards.

The 31-year-old added: “I think the biggest positive will be the future, and if we’re clever and if we do it right, then I think we’ll look back on this season and say it was tough, disappointing, but ultimately it made us realise what we want to be, who we are, what our history and DNA probably suggests we are, what our fans want, what our fans demand.

“Hopefully there is a connection very soon where we look back and say do you know what, disappointing season, absolutely yes but it helped us, it helped us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Mason seems to be suggesting that Levy was let down by both Paratici and Conte, which is certainly not an unfair assessment.

If the Spurs chairman lacked ambition, he certainly would have brought in a demanding manager like Conte and made him one of the highest-paid managers in the world.

However, perhaps Levy and the club hierarchy deserve blame for not doing their due diligence on Paratici’s court case, which had been looming for quite a while.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has responded to criticism from Ryan Mason for comments he and Callum Wilson made regarding Tottenham Hotspur attacker Richarlison.

Antonio and Wilson made Richarlison the butt of their jokes earlier this month on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, suggesting the Brazilian is in line for a suspension for picking up so many yellow cards for his goal celebrations.

Richarlison

The problem is, the majority of his bookings have come from celebrating goals that never were, with VAR ruling out Richarlison’s efforts on three occasions this season.

Richarlison has just three goals for Spurs this term, and only one of those came in the Premier League (Transfermarkt). He had to wait until April before one of his league goals would count.

On the remarks made by Antonio and Wilson, Tottenham Hotspur’s Acting Head Coach, Ryan Mason, made his disapproval very clear and suggested the pair should not have spoken about a fellow professional in the manner they did (Football.London).

Now, Antonio has told the BBC that he is sure Richarlison understands his comments were made in jest and even praised the 26-year-old’s passionate celebrations.

He said: “Mason was a player – we are players. Players have banter with players.

“We have not said Richarlison is not a good footballer or anything about his stats.

“[Richarlison] doesn’t actually care. If he cared, he would not be the quality of player he is – because you can’t let people get into your heads.

“If he saw the comments, he would not have thought we were taking the mick out of him. He will know it’s banter. It was unnecessary for Mason to take it personally.”

Looking at the positives of Richarlison’s behaviour, Antonio added: “I rate the fact he does that every time.

“I’ve stopped celebrating because I don’t want to be when VAR rules it out, so I think he’s mentally stronger than me.

“I’m worried everyone will still be playing and I’ll look like a doughnut doing the worm in the far corner.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I know Antonio and Wilson are just having a laugh on their podcast, but it did feel a little inappropriate to talk about Richarlison the way they did.

That said, you have to say fair play to Antonio for coming out and backtracking like this.

Tottenham secured all three points on the final day of the season with a 4-1 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.

Two goals from Harry Kane, one from Pedro Porro, and a wonderful farewell goal for Lucas Moura ensured victory for the away side.

The performance was far better than we have seen of late from Spurs, with free-flowing attacking football and fairly solid defending on display this afternoon.

Despite a good performance and a big win, the result was not enough to lift Spurs any higher than eighth place in the Premier League table and the club will now be without European football next season.

Speaking to Football.London after the game, Mason had plenty of positive things to say about his side’s display, but stressed the importance of doing better next season.

He said: “We had a job to do today and all we could do was come here today and win the game in difficult circumstances.

“We did that and I think we were good value for it as well. We scored some really, really good goals but also defended our box really well so I was pleased with today and how today went.

“Obviously the bigger picture is disappointment over how the season has gone as a whole because we’ve finished outside of Europe for the first time in a long time.

“We need to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

He added (FootballLondon): “When I go on my summer holidays I would hope and expect that everyone inside of our training ground knows who I am, who my team and who we stand for.

“The hope and expectation is that you guys and everyone else sees that too. I know we’ve done a great job. I really do.

The circumstances were very difficult. I think anyone in the world coming into this situation for six games coming off the back of what had happened and the position we were in was going to find it tough.

“Also if you add into that being on an interim basis, where there’s uncertainty it makes it even tougher.

“But we’ve stuck to what we believe in, we’ve transitioned a little bit I believe in a short space of time and the players have responded, they’ve given us everything and ultimately that’s all I can ask.”

On the future, he said: “Honestly, I think as I said we probably need to understand where we want to go and who we want to be and that’s the most important thing.

“Once you decide that then you can employ the people that fit that and then I think everyone is quite clear on the direction we would like to go.

“We have quite big squad. Whoever is in charge in pre-season, there are a lot of players and decisions to make.

“Ultimately I think we need to get back to who we want to be, who our fans want us to be and then going forward we will have better results on a more consistent basis.

“I don’t know what people think the best is because the best isn’t always necessarily the best option.

“The most important thing for any football club in world football is to have an identity, know who you are and who you want to be and stick to that.

“Then I think you can employ people along the way, people who fit into something as opposed to trying to make people fit into something and compensating.

“I don’t think that works. That’s the key decision. That’s the big decision and that’s the commitment that I think we need to make.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Much better from Spurs today, and hopefully a sign of better things to come next year, too.

I think Mason got it spot on with his team selection and formation, and he clearly got the lads putting in the legwork and attacking high up the pitch, which we have sorely missed this season.

Ryan Mason was not willing to dwell on a job well done in his post-match press conference after the 4-1 win over Leeds United today, and insisted Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of ‘huge decisions’ to make as a football club in the immediate future.

After a disappointing season, Tottenham fans who travelled to Elland Road this afternoon were treated to a fine display of attacking football from the Lilywhites.

Goals from Pedro Porro, Lucas Moura, and a Harry Kane double secured all three points for the visitors in the final game of the season.

The win was not enough to change Tottenham‘s league position however, and with an eighth-place finish, there will be no European football at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium next year.

Looking ahead to the immediate future, Acting Head Coach Mason showed he is under no illusions as to how much work needs to be done at Tottenham if they are to have a chance at success again, and just how important the much-needed rebuild will be this summer.

He told Football.London: “I think there are some huge decisions to make for the football club.

“First of it all it’s to understand who we want to be and where we want to go going forward.

“Then it’s realising who fits that, members of staff and also players as well.

“It’s an important few weeks now and hopefully we make the right decisions.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I hope the people at the top of this football club understand just how crucial these next few weeks are.

We need to get those big appointments sorted immediately, get rid of the deadwood in the squad, and acquire the best players we can possibly attract.

One season without European football isn’t a total disaster, but we have to ensure it is the last.

Ryan Mason has said that Tottenham have lacked continuity over recent years due to the different styles that various managers have employed, but the club will not struggle to attract managers or players this summer.

More than two months on from Antonio Conte‘s sacking, Spurs look no closer to appointing a new head coach.

On the back of Arne Slot‘s decision to remain at Feyenoord, some have questioned if the Tottenham job is as attractive to elite managers as it once was.

The Athletic revealed this week that some within the game perceive the role as a ‘manager’s graveyard’ on the back of Jose Mourinho’s and Antonio Conte’s recent failings.

Julian Nagelsmann

The report revealed that others such as Julian Nagelsmann had reservations due to the uncertainty over the structure at the club following Fabio Paratici’s departure.

However, Mason pointed out that none of the managers who have been linked with the Spurs hot seat seem to be distancing themselves from the speculation.

When asked about Nagelsmann and Slot rejecting the role, the interim Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “These are all hypothetical things, really.

“I’m not sure that maybe these people you might be mentioning – I don’t know who because I’ve not been looking at the press and these types of things – but their names are out there.

“They’re not exactly moving themselves away from it. They know it’s a big club, they know that if Tottenham and their name is being linked then it’s a massive positive for them.

“It’s a big club, we know it is. Every manager, every coach knows this is a big club. Players do. Fans do. You can feel it. You can really feel it when you’re here, when you’re in our stadium.

“This will stay a big club and it’s going to be attractive for whoever is in charge next season. I’m sure players as well will want to come here.”

Mason admitted that the Lilywhites need stability across the board if they want to close the gap on the best teams in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old added: “My view is quite clear in terms of we’ve probably had two or three different styles of football in the last two or three years and I don’t think that is good for any squad of players or for fans.

“For anyone, it is hard to become stable and when you lose people, lose coaches, lose players, lose members of staff, the impact is huge if you keep going from different things.

“Going forward it really is important and we see it in the Premier League, we see it across the leagues, I want people to know who Tottenham are, know what a Tottenham team looks like and certainly know what a Tottenham player looks like.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This idea of the Spurs job not being attractive is an overreaction from fans and journalists to the events of the last few years. It is worth pointing out that the job was attractive enough for Conte 18 months ago.

By all accounts, Arne Slot was also keen on the role and would have been happy to come to North London had Spurs been able to agree on compensation with Feyenoord.

Even though Tottenham have underperformed over recent years, we remain a huge club, with one of the best training ground and stadiums in the world. We also have some world-class attackers of the calibre that only a couple of clubs can afford to sign from the market

There is no doubt that several elite managers will fancy their chances of turning the team around that taking Spurs back to where they were a few years ago.

Ryan Mason has insisted that the Tottenham job still remains extremely attractive to top managers, insisting that it should be a privilege for anyone to manage the Lilywhites.

Arne Slot‘s decision to reject Tottenham’s approach and stay with Feyenoord has raised some question marks about how attractive the hotseat at N17 is, especially after the events of 2021 when the club were seemingly rejected by a whole host of candidates (Evening Standard).

The Athletic revealed on Thursday that sources in the game have said that the job is perceived by some as a ‘manager’s graveyard’ following the recent failings of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

The report also suggested that the lack of a clear structure in place after Fabio Paratici‘s resignation and the uncertainty over Harry Kane‘s future may cause some managers to think twice about taking the job.

However, Mason believes that Tottenham remains a special club to coach, given the history associated with the side.

When asked if the job is still attractive for elite managers, the interim Spurs head coach responded (via Charlie Eccleshare): “Absolutely. The history. It’s Tottenham Hotspur. It’s a big club. Anyone here should feel the privilege and honour to represent this badge, If they don’t they shouldn’t be here, simple as that.”

There is no doubt that some elite managers might think twice about taking the job, given the struggles of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

However, there is no doubt that the role remains extremely attractive and plenty of top coaches will fancy their chances of getting the team back on track over.

It is worth pointing out Conte accepted the job just 18 months ago and Slot himself, by all accounts, was quite keen on the role.

Ryan Mason has provided a team news update to journalists who have attended Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-Leeds United press conference from Hotspur Way this afternoon.

The 31-year-old faces for the final time this season in a pre-match briefing with the curtain set to come down on a turbulent campaign following the conclusion of the match at Elland Road.

Qualification for the Europa Conference League is out of their hands with Spurs having to rely on Brighton to beat Aston Villa, who are currently a point ahead of the north Londoners in seventh place. If Villa draw, Spurs need to win away to Leeds United to secure seventh, while a Villa defeat would leave Ryan Mason’s side needing just a point from the match.

Leeds have plenty to play for and are battling for their Premier League survival and needing to win whilst hoping that Everton lose at home to Bournemouth and Leicester pick up no more than a point at home to West Ham.

Tottenham’s managerial situation looks no clearer after Arne Slot revealed yesterday he is to remain at Feyenoord with Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou now being heavily linked to become Antonio Conte’s successor.

Such is the protocol, the media are informed of the availability of the Spurs squad ahead of the clash against Sam Allardyce’s strugglers.

Ryan Mason admitted following Tottenham’s loss against Brentford that Cristian Romero missed the clash due to an injury.

Both Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg found themselves out of the matchday squad for the club’s final home game of the season, with Yves Bissouma and Davinson Sanchez coming into the starting lineup in place of the pair.

Neither the Argentine nor the Dane have been in good form recently, which perhaps raised suspicions regarding whether they had been dropped.

Cristian Romero

However, Mason confirmed that both players had picked up injuries in the 2-1 loss at Villa Park, which forced them to miss the encounter against the Bees.

The 31-year-old told  Spurs Play about Romero and Hojbjerg: “They got injured in the Villa game.

“I think everybody could see that Cuti [Romero] was struggling in the first 10 to 15 minutes. He’s got an injury and Pierre is the same.”

Spurs produced yet another lacklustre display on Saturday as Thomas Frank’s men came back from a goal down to win 3-1.

The result means that the Lilywhites could potentially be overtaken by Brentford on the final matchday and are now at the risk of finishing as low as ninth in the Premier League table.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Hojbjerg and Romero had played against Brentford, it would have likely made no difference to the result.

The squad is understandably extremely low on confidence at the moment and are seemingly going through the motions as they just want the season to end.

Harry Kane has admitted that he and his Tottenham teammates just want the campaign to end and remarked that Ryan Mason is not to blame for the team’s recent struggles.

After the loss to Brentford on Saturday, it looks pretty likely that Spurs are not going to be in any European competition next season, with the North Londoners at risk of finishing as low as ninth in the table.

Premier League Trophy

It has been a disastrous campaign for the club, particularly when one thinks back to the optimism around N17 last summer at the start of what was Antonio Conte‘s first full season in charge.

Harry Kane admitted it has been a forgettable campaign for everyone at Spurs but insisted that the players are hoping to finish it on a positive note with a win at Elland Road.

The 29-year-old told The Evening Standard after Saturday’s loss: “It’s hard. You feel responsible. We wanted to send the fans home happy.

“You want to enjoy the moment with your family but the fans can’t enjoy it as much as we would have done. We have to keep battling, keep working and try to send the away fans home happy on Sunday.

“It’s been a difficult season. I think we want it to end but we wanted it to end on a couple of wins. We fully believed that was possible after the way we played in the first half.

“Brentford are only a point behind us so it shows any team can punish you. The league is getting tougher and if you don’t keep on top of things you can find yourself dropping down to mid-table and that’s where we’ve been in the last couple of months.”

The Tottenham hierarchy may have been hoping that giving Ryan Mason the reins would rejuvenate the squad and help the club finish the season strongly but the move has not worked, with Lilywhites having won just one of the 31-year-old’s five games in charge.

However, Kane insisted that his former teammate is not to blame as he simply has not had the time needed for the squad to learn his philosophy.

The striker added: “Ryan is trying to help us as much as possible. We changed the system again and I thought it worked great in the first half.

“Sometimes these things take time. The type of training, energy and fitness takes a while to build up but when you’re in the middle of the season with few games to go you haven’t got the chance to do that.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think the club nor the fans blame Mason for any of the recent results as the 31-year-old has walked into a difficult situation and has hardly had any time on the training ground to work with the squad.

It is clear that everyone at Spurs just wants this season to be done so that they can wipe the slate clean and start fresh this summer under a new director of football and head coach.

By the age of 18, the striker had already amassed ten first-team appearances for the Lilywhites, although most of them are as a substitute and he is yet to score for the club (Transfermarkt).

He was given the opportunity to gain some real first-team experience with Portsmouth this year in League One, and has certainly done just that.

With 40 appearances and six goals in all competitions (Transfermarkt), Dane Scarlett has impressed many with his displays in the third tier of English football this term, though some would have hoped he could have contributed more goals.

Scarlett’s work is done at Portsmouth, with the League One season over for the South Coast club. The England youth international will now be looking ahead to his future with Spurs.

Speaking to the Irish Times, Mason commented on Scarlett’s development and had plenty of positive things to say.

Ryan Mason said: “I have seen Dane in the last week or so since he came back and he looks different from a physical point of view.

“You can feel that he has played men’s football so from that point of view I am sure he is in a better place than he was 12 months ago.

“But at the same time, going into an Under-20 World Cup, it is a great opportunity for him and probably a different style and different type of football he will come up against.

“I am sure he will go into that challenge full of confidence.”

I’m sure Dane Scarlett would have wanted more goals this season for Portsmouth, but he has played well and now has such invaluable experience under his belt.

I would imagine he will go out on loan again next season and I’m excited to see what he does.

Tom Huddlestone believes that the Tottenham hierarchy need to give the next manager time to build a foundation at the club for at least 18 months, irrespective of the results.

It is far from clear who Spurs’ top managerial target is at the moment, with the North London club allegedly focussing on appointing a sporting director first before resuming their search for a new head coach (Daily Mirror).

The Telegraph revealed on Wednesday that Tottenham have now stepped up their interest in Arne Slot, with the North London club said to be keen to speak to the Feyenoord boss.

The publication revealed that despite the Lilywhites insisting that there is no leading candidate for the role at the moment, the Dutchman is now in ‘serious consideration’ for the job.

However, it was explained that Spurs had also spoken to Luis Enrique and remain interested in Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

Huddlestone believes that irrespective of who takes over, the foundation at Hotspur Way needs to be rebuilt and that is only possible if the next manager is given time.

The former Spurs midfielder told Football.London: “Obviously it’s a bit of a crossroads at the club. I think it needs a manager that is going to get 18 to 24 months regardless of the results.

“They’re not quite but almost going to have to build from the ground up, get the foundations right,” said the former England international.

“I think there’s a nucleus of a good team and squad there, it just needs a bit of solidity there, between everyone, the board, the fans and the players.”

Huddlestone was at Tottenham when Mason was in and around the first team but the 31-year-old only made his debut the season after the midfielder had left to join Hull City.

When asked if his former teammate is ready for the full-time role, the 36-year-old responded: “It’s difficult. It’s probably one of the top 10 or 12 jobs in the world for a manager so for it to be someone’s first gig would be a big ask but he knows the club inside out.

“[Ryan] has worked under Jose [Mourinho] and Antonio [Conte] so there’s not many better to learn from so maybe, but as I said it probably needs someone to have a little bit of time but also money to spend as well.”

Mason is spot on when he says that the next coach needs to be given time to rebuild foundations like Arteta was at Arsenal.

That is perhaps why it is crucial that Tottenham opt for a project manager rather than someone who will get frustrated if he cannot compete for trophies straight away.
