Son Heung-min has admitted that he is enjoying playing alongside James Maddison, remarking that Tottenham were crying out for a creative player of the 26-year-old’s profile for a long time.
While Spurs fans were excited by Maddison’s arrival in the summer, it is safe to say that he has surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic Tottenham supporter with the way he has begun his career in North London.
The former Leicester City man has already emerged as one of the leaders of the pitch, being handed the vice-captaincy by Ange Postesocglou, and has quickly established himself as one of the Lilywhites’ most important players.
When asked about the impact that Maddison has made since arriving at the club, Son told The Guardian: “When we are talking about Madders we could stay here all day. He’s a really good player.
“For a couple of years we needed this kind of player to create chances and make passes, which is very important. Playing with him is a joy. Hopefully, he can score and assist many goals.”
Spurs have needed James Maddison for a long time
The attacking midfielder opened his account in front of goal for Spurs on Sunday after his well-timed run was picked out by Pape Matar Sarr, and Son was pleased with the way the side moved the ball to create the goal.
The new Tottenham captain said on Maddison’s strike: “I’m very happy for him that he scored his first goal for the club. I hope there are many more to come for him. He totally deserves it.
“He always plays thinking of the team and not for the individual. Madders scored a fantastic goal but credit also to Pape [Matar Sarr, who provided the assist]. We are all happy at this kind of special goal, because we are moving the ball really well.”
While it is still early days, Tottenham certainly look a much happier unit than they did under Antonio Conte, and Son admitted that the players are enjoying the style of play that Ange Posteocglou is implementing at the club.
The South Korean added: “If you think about why you started playing football as a kid, I think you didn’t expect to be a professional, you are just having fun with your ball.
“I think it’s very important, having fun. It helps you with your confidence and your self-belief. We are getting there but we only played three games. We have to concentrate and move forward.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Maddison’s passing and technical quality was never in doubt, he has much quicker feet than I thought, which makes him quite press-resistant. It feels like we potentially have a world-class player on our hands.
Apart from his qualities as a footballer, it is also clear that the England international has a fantastic mentality and is great for dressing room morale.
