Alasdair Gold has said that he will be stunned if Tottenham Hotspur do not offer Son Heung-min a new contract.
Son arguably had his worst season since his move to Tottenham last term, struggling to have much of an impact on the final third.
However, the South Korean was hardly the only one who struggled under Antonio Conte, and Ange Postecoglou has already demonstrated to the forward he is central to his plans by offering him the captaincy.
The 30-year-old has started the season in fine form, netting a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 5-2 win over Burnley after being asked to operate as the number nine.
Son’s current contract at Tottenham runs out in 2025 (Tranfermarkt) and it has been reported over recent weeks that Saudi Pro League clubs are plotting another move for the superstar next year after failing with a move to sign him this summer (talkSPORT).
Gold expects Daniel Levy and co to move swiftly to try and tie down the forward to a new deal.
Could Heung-min Son get a new Spurs contract soon?
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I would be stunned if we don’t see a new contract offered to Son [Heung-min], I would say probably quite shortly. He’s only got a couple of years left, he like I say a [CAA] Base player as well so they’ll be looking after him.
“And he’s the captain of the club, I think that would be a great move and yes he’s in his thirties but I would say another year or two on the end of that, why not?
“Terrific advert for the football club, the kind of person he is, the kind of player he is and just how just good a human being he is. If you’re going to be really cynical, I’m sure Sonny brings in so much money for Spurs because of just the huge kind of reputation he has across the world but obviously of course across Asia.
“I’m sure the money he brings in makes a new contract a no-brainer. Whether he wants to sign it is another thing. I think he’s very happy right now and if you’re going to get him to commit, now is probably the time.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham usually do not offer big contracts to players on the wrong side of 30 but I have no doubt they will make an exception for Son, who is now very much the face of the team and looks like he can continue performing at the highest level for several years.
