Journalist Dean Jones has revealed a contact told him Perisic could be Spurs’ only new signing to start against Southampton on Saturday (The Done Deal Show).
Tottenham have signed six players this summer including Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Fraser Forster, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet, and Perisic.
Alasdair Gold reported that Yves Bissouma is a doubt for Saturday’s match after tweaking his hamstring during the club’s friendly against Roma last week.
Meanwhile, Richarlison is banned for the match against Southampton after the FA suspended him for throwing a flare into the crowd during a win against Chelsea while he was playing for Everton last season (The Sun).
For players like Spence and Lenglet, it could be deemed too soon for them to start. Neither player was signed in time to take part in Tottenham’s pre-season tour of South Korea. Therefore, Davinson Sanchez, Matt Doherty, and Emerson could have better chances.
In Fraser Forster’s case, it is expected that captain Hugo Lloris will keep his place in the starting line-up, leaving Tottenham’s new signing on the bench.
When revealing what his contact said about Tottenham’s potential line-up for Saturday’s match, Dean Jones said (The Done Deal Show): “I text someone today because I was trying to figure out what Tottenham’s first XI will look like on the first day of the season…
“…and who would play and the guy who I was messaging is very well connected in terms of getting the lineups and he said ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if Perisic is the only one on show out of the new signings.’
“That is quite interesting because Perisic isn’t even up to full speed at the moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
While it’s easy to say ‘just throw them all in,’ that is not always the best option. Players need time to adapt without the criticism they may face if they make a mistake after being put into the team too early.
Perisic has already played under Conte, and seems like a model professional with experience at the highest level. Therefore, it makes sense that he would be the one that Conte trusts from the start.
Our players from last season took us to the Champions League so there should be no reason to panic for Spurs fans. Tottenham’s new signings’ debuts will come in time.
