Over the past few months, there have been rumours floating around which have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are attracting interest of a potential takeover (Standard).

One of the biggest names to be linked with a takeover of the club was Google’s parent company Alphabet, who were said to be in talks with ENIC regarding a billion pound take over (ESPN FC).

Robert Kraft, the American billionaire owner of the NFL franchise New England Patriots and Major League Soccer club New England Revolution, has also been rumoured to be interested in buying the Lilywhites (Football.London).

While these rumours have got some Spurs fans excited recently, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has dismissed suggestions of an imminent takeover and put it down to nothing more than pure speculation.

Responding to a question on a possible takeover during a Q&A, Gold said: “It wouldn’t be a week at Tottenham Hotspur if there wasn’t a takeover rumours. I think I’ve heard the club linked with buyouts from companies or billionaires in America, China and across the Middle East in just 2020 alone.

“I can totally understand it as well. Spurs are like a plumped up goose with their shiny new world class stadium, the training facilities and now the most famous manager in the world in charge, but the Alphabet rumour, in particular, seems to just be one of those coincidences that end up being a WhatsApp message sent everywhere.

“I saw a financial news story about Alphabet, the parent company of Google, entering the trillion-dollar level in world business last month. Then within 24 hours suddenly Spurs fans were firing around messages about Alphabet buying the club and I even had one saying they were going to offer a trillion dollars. I mean come on!

“I haven’t heard anything about such a move and I don’t believe Alphabet even invest in sport. It feels like one of those whispers that is either people getting confused amid the new stories about Alphabet or even someone just starting a prank rumour, like the Kraft family one, and it snowballing from there.”

However, the journalist did reveal that Levy and Joe Lewis could be open to selling the club if they receive the right offer.

He added: “There will always be NFL owner buyout rumours due to Daniel Levy’s close ties to the sport and the amount of research and dialogue he has had with various high profiles American sports owners and franchises while building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Ultimately Levy and Joe Lewis are businessmen and if they get an offer that makes sense they could well take it, but it doesn’t feel like that moment has arrived just yet.”

Those that expect that we will be able to spend hundreds of millions every transfer window with new billionaire owners will get a rude shock when they discover that the implications of FFP will not allow any other team to do a Man City or a Chelsea. That is why the best guarantee of long-term financial stability is to increase our revenue streams which Daniel Levy had done fantastically well over the years.
