Alan Shearer has suggested that Son Heung-min might be relishing the extra responsibility placed on his shoulders following the departure of Harry Kane.
With Kane having joined Bayern Munich, Son has now arguably become the new Mr. Tottenham, not only being one of the club’s longest-serving players but also now being handed the captaincy by Ange Postecoglou.
The South Korean has already become more vocal, now that he has been tasked with additional leadership responsibility, with some reports over recent weeks indicating that many at the club have been surprised by how he has stepped up to the plate since being handed the armband (Football.London).
The 31-year-old is also under more pressure to deliver in front of goal after Kane’s departure, and the forward served us a timely reminder of what he can do against Burnley on Sunday, netting a hat-trick to help Spurs emerge 5-2 winners.
Heung-min Son may be enjoying his new Spurs role
Shearer believes that Son might now be enjoying the task of being Tottenham’s main man this season rather than being in the shadow of the England captain.
The Newcastle legend told The Rest Is Football podcast about the Spurs forward: “Some of his goals at the weekend were brilliant. I just wonder if there’s a small part of Son that is enjoying more responsibility, enjoying becoming the main man.
“I think some players will enjoy that and like that and take to it. And it looks as if that can be the case with him, because he might feel freed up. He might feel he can get his personality out even more and do more things on the pitch because Harry is now gone.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We have certainly seen in the past that Son often steps up and delivers whenever Kane has been out injured.
The South Korean also infamously celebrated by shouting ‘You know who I am’ to the camera when he scored against Man City in the Champions League following Pep Guardiola’s infamous ‘Harry Kane team’ comment.
So, Son certainly has that extremely competitive side to him (as one would expect of anyone who has got to his level), which is why he might be extremely keen to impress this season.
