Frank Leboeuf has defended Harry Kane for saying that there wasn’t as much pressure at Tottenham to pick up consistent results, insisting that it might be due to a lack of expectations from the media.
Kane has hit the ground running at Bayern with three goals in their first three league games of the season, with the Bavarians having a perfect record in the Bundesliga so far.
That is very much par for the course for Bayern and Kane himself admitted in an interview with The Independent last week that the pressure and expectations at Bayern are far more considerable than it was at Spurs since the German giants are expected to win every game convincingly.
The 30-year-old remarked that in contrast, at Tottenham, it “wasn’t a disaster” if the team went without a win for a couple of matches.
The comments have irked some Spurs fans, who have questioned on social media if it was Kane’s responsibility to set high standards at the club, given that he was one of the leaders of the dressing room.
The media do not expect much from Tottenham
When that question was put to Leboeuf, the former Chelsea man told ESPN FC: “The pressure he is talking about, surely he put it in the dressing room about being unhappy and sharing to his teammates saying ‘we have to make it bigger’. I am sure the guy had that mentality.
“The outside of the dressing room. Maybe the board themselves didn’t put the pressure enough. Maybe the media don’t care about Tottenham because they talk about Arsenal, they talk about Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. And Manchester City.
“They don’t about Spurs and they don’t expect anything from Spurs, so they don’t have the pressure. And the fans are used to not having Tottenham at the top of the table. They don’t put pressure and everyone is happy. It’s the mentality of everybody.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not understand why some Spurs fans took so much offence to Kane’s comments. It is obvious that the pressure to win Bundesliga matches at Bayern would be far higher than the pressure to win Premier League encounters at Spurs, given how dominant the Bavarian side have been for the last decade in Germany.
However, Leboeuf’s comments on the media not caring about Spurs is obviously not true as most outlets cannot wait for us to fail so that they can take the mickey with the ‘bottling’ narrative.
If the media did not care about Spurs, ESPN FC would not be talking about us at every opportunity and Kane’s comments about the lack of pressure at Tottenham would have not made big headlines.
