Marca have claimed that Aston Villa have moved into pole position ahead of Tottenham to secure the services of Sevilla sporting director Monchi.

We covered a report from Mundo Deportivo earlier this week, which suggested that Spurs have their eye on Monchi, whose future at Sevilla was said to be in doubt.

The report alleged that Spaniard has allegedly asked the club for a ‘period of reflection’ to make a decision on his future and is now thought to be considering jumping ship this summer.

Marca have now also talked up the chances of Monchi departing from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, with the report also backing up Tottenham’s interest in the Sevilla director.

However, the outlet adds that it is now Villa who have moved to the front of the queue for the 54-year-old, with Unai Emery said to be personally spearheading the pursuit of his compatriot.

The report adds that Monchi would be given a ‘significant budget’ to work with in the Premier League, particularly at Villa Park, which is one of the main reasons he is tempted to leave Sevilla.

With Scott Munn now overseeing the big footballing decisions at the club, Spurs will likely be looking to limit the director of the football’s role to mainly just recruitment, which perhaps makes Monchi an attractive candidate, given that his expertise lies mainly in the transfer market.
