Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has reported that despite Pau Torres being on Tottenham’s radar, Aston Villa are not being challenged in their efforts to sign the Villarreal star at the moment.
It is clear that strengthening the backline is a priority for Spurs this summer, with 90 min reporting on Wednesday that Ange Postecoglou has now given the club the green light to push ahead with a move for a central defender.
The report claimed that Manchester United’s Harry Maguire was at the top of Spurs’ wishlist while Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte and Wolves’ Max Kilman were the other options that Spurs had their eye on.
Another left-sided centre-back who was previously mooted as a target for Spurs is Torres, with Football Transfers stating last month that the Lilywhites were ready to reignite their interest in the Spaniard after failing to sign him last summer.
The outlet added that the North London club are set to face competition from Villa and Juventus for the Villarreal star’s services.
Galetti has now said that Spurs are waiting for a sporting director to arrive, which has opened the door for Unai Emery’s men to push ahead with a move for the 26-year-old.
Spurs offering Villa no competition for Pau Torres
When asked about Torres, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “[Aston Villa are] On his track at the moment.
“There are also Tottenham and Juventus but Spurs, before finalising any market choice, have to wait for the new director.
“At the same time, the Bianconeri for different reasons, have yet to understand how all the extra issues will end up.
“And at the moment, they cannot make any operation on the transfer market. So, we can say that Aston Villa have no concrete competitors in this moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I suspect that Tottenham are mainly looking at English centre-backs such as Maguire, Guehi and Kilman because of the issues they have with their homegrown numbers, which is why they are perhaps seemingly overlooking options such as Torres, Hincapie and Ndicka at the moment.
