Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has revealed that Aston Villa have now entered the race to sign Tottenham target James Maddison.

We covered a report from The Telegraph last week, which claimed that Maddison has emerged as a ‘priority target’ for Ange Postecoglou and the North London club are ready to push ahead with a move for the attacking midfielder.

This was followed by a report in The Daily Star over the weekend, which claimed that the Lilywhites had already launched an opening offer of £40m for the Leicester City star.

It has widely been reported over the last few days that Tottenham’s main competitors for Maddison’s signature are Newcastle, with Sky Sports even suggesting on Monday that the Magpies had moved ahead of Spurs in the race for the midfielder’s signature.

If Galetti’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs might also have a competition to contend with from Aston Villa for the England international’s services.

The journalist revealed that Villa are alert to Maddison’s situation, adding that Newcastle remain in talks with the player while Tottenham could ‘take some concrete steps soon’.

There is no doubt that Tottenham would be a much more attractive destination for Maddison than Villa, even though Unai Emery’s side are in the Europa Conference League.

The challenge for Spurs would be in convincing the 26-year-old to join them over Newcastle, given that the Magpies can offer the player Champions League football and appear to be a club on the up.
