Arsenal legend and football pundit Ray Parlour has suggested Tottenham Hotspur would benefit from the signing of James Maddison this summer.
Maddison has been a star performer for Leicester City over the last two seasons but was unable to prevent the Foxes from being relegated to the Championship this year.
It seems James Maddison will remain in the Premier League, however. The attacking midfielder’s impressive form has been enough to attract attention from a number of top-flight clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur have long held an interest in the player. We previously covered the fact that Maddison has been earmarked as a ‘priority’ for new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou (Telegraph).
Despite this, Newcastle United have been mooted as the front runners for the 26-year-old’s signature (Sky Sports).
A report from Italian journalist Rudy Galetti also put forward Aston Villa‘s name as a possible destination for Maddison.
Parlour says Spurs are dying for player like Maddison
According to Ray Parlour in a recent appearance on talkSPORT (13/6/23 at 8:57 am), however, it is Tottenham Hotspur who would be the best fit for Maddison.
He said: “I would say that [James] Maddison would have more impact at Spurs wouldn’t he than Newcastle? I think Newcastle’s midfield is a lot stronger.
“[Rodrigo] Bentancur was out for quite a while and [Tottenham] missed him in central midfield. But, Maddison, they’re dying for a player like him at Spurs.”
Ally McCoist, also appearing on the show, added: “I don’t think they’ve replaced [Christian] Eriksen in that particular role.”
Spurs Web Opinion
In terms of game time and having an impact on the team, Maddison would certainly benefit more at Tottenham than he would at Newcastle.
You’d imagine he would start most games for us and would fit into our style of play really well, whereas he would be part of a rotation at Newcastle.
