COPE have revealed that Aston Villa are ready to begin negotiations with Villarreal over a deal for Pau Torres, who has been mooted as a target for Tottenham over recent months.

It has been widely reported that signing a left-sided centre-back is a priority for Tottenham this summer, with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven being linked with a move to the North London club over recent days (Fabrizio Romano).

It was previously reported by Football Transfers last month that Spurs could battle Aston Villa and Juventus for Torres this summer.

The publication claimed that the Lilywhites had an offer turned down for the Spaniard last summer and could reignite their pursuit of the player once again.

It was subsequently claimed by Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg last week that the Villarreal star had also been offered to Bayern Munich.

Aston Villa set to swoop for Spurs-linked Torres

COPE have now backed up the interest of Villa, Juve and Bayern in Torres but they make no mention of Tottenham.

The publication reveals that the centre-back’s release clause stands at €65m (£55.8m) and adds that the Midlands club are expected to begin negotiations with the La Liga side for the player over the coming days.

Spurs Web Opinion

There has been no indication over the last few weeks that Torres is anywhere near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, with the North London club seemingly having turned their attention to other options.

It appears as if Tapsoba has now emerged as the Lilywhites’ top target for the left centre-back role.
