If Sport’s latest update is to be believed, Barcelona ‘need to sell’ the Spain international next summer, due to their ongoing financial issues, with clubs across European football said to be queuing up for the player.

This includes Spurs and Chelsea, who are now both allegedly on ‘red alert’ after hearing about the development.

The report adds that Fati will ‘listen to proposals’ for a permanent move away from Camp Nou next summer and that the 21-year-old ‘believes’ that several ‘important clubs’ could bid for him next year if he does well at Brighton.

The publication reveals that several Saudi Arabian clubs are also keeping tabs on the La Masia graduate.

However, if Sport’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs might have some tough competition to contend with for Fati’s signature, with Saudi Pro League clubs alleged to have reached out regarding their interest in the youngster.

The report states that while the Spain international views a move to the Middle East as a ‘distant possibility’ for the time being, some members of his entourage are very much in favour of such a move.

The publication explains that as things stand, the Barcelona hierarchy have not made a decision on Fati and want to see how he gets on at Brighton for the rest of the season.

Postecoglou spoke to Fati but couldn’t convince him

BBC Sport have claimed that Spurs were in pole position to snap up Fati and that the player even had a ‘long chat’ with Postecoglou.

However, they allege that it was the persuasive skills of Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi that convinced the Barca academy graduate to head to the South Coast instead.

The Athletic have claimed that by Wednesday, Fati had decided that he would leave Barcelona in search of regular game time, with the attacker having communicated the same to Xavi.

The outlet states that while the forward’s agent, Jorge Mendes, put out the word that his client was available, Spurs were ‘tempted’ and decided to include the player on their shortlist of wide players to follow up.

It is explained that the structure of Mendes’ offer was always a loan without an option to buy. It is alleged by sources close to Fati that the 20-year-old seemed convinced about the idea of joining Spurs.

Sky Sports point out that Fati was one of three wide-forwards on Tottenham’s radar along with Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson and PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko. However, it now appears that Fati is joining Brighton and Bakayoko is going to Brentford.

The outlet said that Johnson remained the Lilywhites’ top target but they would have to pay in excess of £40m to prise him away from the City Ground. It remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy and co will get the deal done in time.

Brighton have now seemingly come from nowhere to land Fati, with Romano taking to social media to give his ‘here we go’ seal of approval for the transfer.

The journalist revealed that the Spain international will head to the Amex Stadium on a straight loan deal without an option to buy, with the Seagulls covering the majority of the players’ salary.

Romano added that Fati will travel to the South Coast for his medical today as Brighton want the deal done as soon as possible.

There was no way Tottenham were going to accept a loan deal for Fati without any option to buy. So, if that was the player’s preference (or Barcelona’s), I can see why Spurs pulled out of the deal. If we wanted Fati on loan, we would have certainly gotten him ahead of Brighton.

Fati would prefer a move to a top club over Spurs

Sport have now elaborated on the matter further by stating that Fati only wants to leave Barcelona to join a ‘top club’ such as Liverpool or Atletico Madrid.

However, it is explained that those options look complicated as the Reds and the Colchoneros would only make a move for the Spain international if they offload Mohamed Salah or Yannick Carrasco respectively.

The report adds that Barcelona and super agent Jorge Mendes are both ‘pushing’ Fati to accept a loan move to Spurs, with the Lilywhites said to be showing a willingness to finalise the deal.

If Fati is not overly keen on the move to Spurs, I do not see Postecoglou wanting to bring him in as the Australian evidently only wants players who are fully committed to the project. 

I am relatively confident that Tottenham see the Barca starlet as a back up to Brennan Johnson, who I believe remains Postecoglou’s top target.

In fact, Spurs’ intention in opening talks over Fati might be to put pressure on Nottingham Forest to reduce their asking price for the Wales international.

There is still plenty of time in the transfer window for this deal to materialise and I would not be surprised if Barca actively try and push Fati out of the door, given their financial situation.

Earlier this week, Ben Jacobs claimed Tottenham Hotspur would value Ansu Fati at around £45m, but his current club Barcelona would want at least £60m for the player.

As the final days of the transfer window play out, Tottenham are still yet to sign a new attacking player. Since the departure of Harry Kane at the start of the month, it has been widely expected that the club would try to fill this void in some way.

It has been suggested that Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson will be the latest recruit in the Ange Postecoglou era (The Times).

Barcelona want an ‘astronomical’ offer for Ansu Fati

While interest in Fati appears to be cooling off as Spurs get closer to the signing of Johnson, it appears there may be other reasons why the young Spaniard is unlikely to move to North London.

In a recorded message on Twitter, Ben Jacobs said: “My understanding is that Tottenham have looked and they think that there is a ballpark valuation, this is only from internal discussions, of about £45m [for Ansu Fati].

“Aston Villa have taken a look and even some other clubs, like Manchester United held an internal discussion building up to the window, just as due diligence – rather than anything more. They were thinking in the region of €35-40m (£30-34.3m).

“Barcelona would be looking at 70, 80, 90 million Euros (£60-77.2m), which feels astronomical, but that is what they feel the player could be worth and that is why a deal hasn’t been done.”

Now it appears the Lilywhites are instead looking at a loan deal for Fati, although it remains to be seen whether that would include an option or obligation to buy the youngster.

There is no way Spurs, or any club, would be paying that kind of money for Ansu Fati. He is a talented player, but has injury concerns holding him back, and is still so young that it’s hard to know exactly how he will eventually develop anyway. If that is the market price for Fati, then I can understand the loan move idea.

However, he explains that the North London club have now identified two other wide-forwards as alternatives should a deal for the Forest star not materialise.

I have no doubt that Fati will be of interest to several clubs around Europe. Despite having had a few seasons with Barca’s first team, the forward is still very young, which is why many would be willing to take a punt on him.

The 20-year-old does fit the profile of a Postecoglou signing but it remains to be seen if Tottenham would want to get involved in a bidding war for the youngster.

Multiple Spanish publications have reported over the last month that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Fati, who has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona this season (Fichajes.net).

Sport claimed last week that the Catalan giants had decided to cash in on the 20-year-old this summer as they need to raise funds to pursue their top transfer targets.

The publication asserted that Fati’s agent, Jorge Mendes, had promised to bring an offer of around €70m (£61.7m) for his client, which Barca would be ready to accept.

According to 90 min’s latest update, the attacker has now been informed that he can leave Barca, who are now thought to be ‘working tirelessly’ on a deal to bring Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou.

It is said that the club are working to ensure that the deal will not fall foul of La Liga’s financial regulations, which is why they have decided to cash in on Fati.

The outlet makes no mention of Spurs but adds that the Spain international is of interest to both Wolves and West Ham United.

However, it is asserted that Fati would not be particularly keen on joining either side and would hope for a bigger club to come calling this summer.

The fact that none of the big Premier League clubs are seemingly prioritising a move for Fati is quite indicative of the attacker’s decline over the last 12 months.

If the 20-year-old is valued at around £60m, I hope Tottenham stay well clear of the deal.

This was followed by a report from Sport a couple of days ago, which suggested that Barca have decided to cash in on the winger as they need to raise funds to pursue their summer targets.

The publication asserted that the Catalan giants are listening to offers for the forward and that the player’s agent Jorge Mendes has assured the club that he will fetch a bid of around €70m (£61.5m) for his client this summer.

The publication adds that such an offer is most likely to come from the Premier League and would be enough to convince Barca to sell Fati.

However, Fati’s father, Bori, has now poured cold water over those reports by stating that his son will remain at Camp Nou.

Bori said (via Fabrizio Romano): “Ansu will stay at Barcelona. That’s for sure. He stays, it’s guaranteed”.

The likes of Fati and Franck Kessie might want to stay at Barcelona but that does not mean that they would get their wish.

The Catalan giants have not been shy of forcing players out of the club against their wishes and they might do the same this summer, given their need to offset losses.

There is very little value in that deal for such a price, especially considering that Tottenham already have Son and Richarlison, who are both adept at playing off the left, which is where Fati is at his best.

The publication claimed that the Spain international had told his agent that he wishes to remain at Camp Nou as he is not prepared to give up on his dream of playing for Barcelona.

Sport have now also confirmed the same, stating that Fati has made it clear that he wants to remain at his boyhood club.

However, it is asserted that Xavi Hernandez’s men are expected to put the attacker ‘on the market’ against his wishes.

The publication asserts that Fati’s representatives are now thus offering his client to several Premier League sides.

Given Barca’s financial state at present, they will likely be willing to listen to offers for Fati, particularly since the youngster has clearly fallen down Xavi’s pecking order.

However, I would be surprised if Tottenham get involved in a bidding war with other Premier League sides for the 20-year-old’s signature.
