Dimitar Berbatov has urged Brighton forward Even Ferguson to snub approaches from the likes of Tottenham in favour of remaining at Brighton.
Ferguson has won many admirers since breaking into Brighton’s senior side, with the centre-forward showing maturity beyond his age.
The 18-year-old has already broken into the Republic of Ireland’s senior set-up and scored his first goal during last month’s international break to add to his tally of eight strikes for the Seagulls this season (Transfermarkt).
The Daily Mail revealed last week that Spurs see Ferguson as ‘an heir apparent’ to Harry Kane and are thus keen on snapping him up when the transfer window opens.
The publication added that the Lilywhites were set to face competition from some of their Premier League rivals for the teenager, with Manchester United also said to be keen on signing the centre-forward.
However, The Irish Independent handed Tottenham a blow on Thursday by reporting that Ferguson is expected to commit his future to the Seagulls, with the striker’s representatives said to be in ‘advanced talks’ over a new long-term deal at the Amex Stadium.
Berbatov believes that the centre-forward is at the right club to continue developing as a player.
The former Spurs and Man Utd star told Betfred (as relayed by MEN) about the Brighton starlet: “There’s no doubt that he’s going to be of interest to big clubs, but for me he should continue his development at Brighton.
“He should aim to remain a first-team regular, play every game and take it from there.
“You don’t want to leave at the first opportunity to a big club and end up sitting on the bench, so I believe he’s at the right place for him at this moment in time.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There really is no good footballing reason for Ferguson to leave Brighton this summer, given that he is getting regular game time under his belt at the Amex Stadium.
So, it looks fairly certain that he is going to sign a new deal.
I can see him making a big-money switch to an elite club a year or two down the line.
