Ange Postecoglou has reacted to the ever-changing environment at Tottenham Hotspur since his arrival at the club, with one new arrival and one exit this week alone.

Scott Munn officially started his job as Tottenham’s new chief football officer this week (Charlie Eccleshare), while Spurs also sacked chief scout Leonardo Gabbanini (Matt Law).

It has also been said that Munn’s first job in North London will be to find a new managing director of football, while Fabio Paratici’s consultancy role at the club will likely come to an end.

All of that comes on the back of Ange Postecoglou joining as Tottenham’s new head coach this summer, as well as a transfer window full of player comings and goings.

It well and truly feels like a new era at Tottenham Hotspur, and Postecoglou was asked in his press conference today how it felt to be in the middle of so much change around the club.

Postecoglou welcomes change at Tottenham

Postecoglou said (Football London): Normal for me. Wherever I have gone and I think that is the club understanding, I’ve constantly said that if you want to change, you need to change.

“All these things happen, sometimes not sequential or all at the same time, but over the course of time you find we are heading off in a new direction and some people make their own decisions about whether they’re involved in that and other times we look for, or the club look to bring new people in.

“That’s the kind of position we’re in as a club. As I said, it wasn’t going to take one window for us to build the squad we wanted and it wasn’t going to take a couple of months to have the structure we wanted.

“It will evolve over the next 12 months, couple of years I think you’ll find, and we will have a constant evolution of people and the way we play, the way we train and the environment itself.

“All these kinds of things are a natural consequence of the club deciding to change direction from last year.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Tottenham have needed this kind of overhaul, from top to bottom, for at least three years now. While it is frustrating to only just be at the start of the process now, it is also exciting to see what kind of journey Spurs can go on over the next three to five seasons.

After news broke today that Tottenham Hotspur had parted ways with chief scout Leonardo Gabbanini, it has been revealed that Fabio Paratici could end his consultancy role with the club, too.

When Tottenham had Antonio Conte at the helm, there was, rather naturally, an array of Italian talent behind the scenes at the club.

Conte brought assistant manager Cristian Stellini with him to to club, and later, Leonardo Gabbanini was hired to assist the manager with transfer activity. Set piece specialist, Gianni Vio, is another example of a compatriot joining the club during Conte’s reign.

All of this was brought together, of course, by the club’s former managing director of football, Fabio Paratici.

However, when Conte left the club rather unceremoniously in March of this year, the cracks began to show. Paratici then stepped down from his role in April, following his involvement in Juventus’ capital gains trial, and Stellini was sacked just four games into his caretaker tenure.

Gabbanini remained at the club throughout this summer, to assist new manager Ange Postecoglou in building his new squad, and did a fine job, too.

Fabio Paratici set to part ways with Tottenham

In a report from The Telegraph today, it was revealed that Gabbanini has been relieved of his duties by Spurs, with the club looking to restructure following the appointment of chief football officer, Scott Munn.

The report also claims that Paratici, who had been serving as a consultant to Tottenham throughout the summer (Football.London), may actually be done with that role, too. Apparently, that “arrangement is also likely to now end” in the fallout of Gabbanini’s departure.

Spurs Web Opinion

We have a lot to be thankful for with regard to Paratici, namely the signings of Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Dejan Kulusevski. But with new faces throughout the club, it makes perfect sense to close the door on every part of the past and move forward.

Multiple reports have revealed that Tottenham have parted ways with chief scout, Leonardo Gabbanini, with journalist Matt Law even using the word ‘sacked’.

Football London say that Gabbanini has left his role at Tottenham despite working closely with Ange Postecoglou during the recent summer transfer window.

During this time, Spurs signed the likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz, and Brennan Johnson.

Leonardo Gabbanini leaves Tottenham Hotspur

Gabbanini was first appointed by Fabio Paratici during his time as managing director of football, but has now left the club after just over a year of service.

Football London say that the Italian was brought into the club to ‘expand and improve Spurs’ scouting network’, but it appears that is no longer the case. However, Tottenham are said to be continuing down the data-driven scouting route.

Scott Munn started as the club’s new chief football officer today and his first task will be to hire a director of football type figure, but it appears a new chief scout may now also be required in North London.

Spurs Web Opinion:

This seems very strange just as Tottenham appear to have found their groove with scouting young players again. However, I’m sure there is a plan in place to bring in a new chief scout who aligns with what Postecoglou needs at Spurs.

Alasdair Gold has shared an insight into the way Tottenham Hotspur have been conducting their transfer activity this summer, and suggests Ange Postecoglou, Daniel Levy, and Leonardo Gabbanini have formed a great partnership so far.

A lot has changed at Tottenham in the last few months. Ange Postecoglou took over as Spurs manager at the start of the summer, and has overseen a fairly quick transformation across many aspects of the club.

Players have come and gone, a new style of exciting football has been introduced, and most importantly, there appears to be a unity and optimism around the club that has been missing over the last few years.

The Lilywhites have made several new signings already this summer, with more expected to come before the transfer window closes.

At this stage, the new arrivals appear to have been just what Spurs needed, too, with the likes of Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison making positive starts to their life in North London.

Spurs are using data analysis to choose transfers

Apparently, Tottenham have been leaning on data analysis to scope out potential transfer targets this summer, and the dynamic between Postecoglou, the club’s chairman, Daniel Levy, and chief scout, Leonardo Gabbanini is proving to be beneficial to how the club are operating in the transfer market.

That’s according to Alasdair Gold, who had the following to say on his YouTube channel: “In terms of incoming ones, we know some of the standout names.

£I think there will be some we’re not aware of. Obviously, Gift Orban is high on the list, a lot of data-based stuff coming through Spurs at the moment.

“A lot of that led by Leonardo Gabbanini, Postecoglou and Levy. From what I understand, that’s quite a good little triangle that’s forming between Postecoglou, Gabbanini and Levy in terms of really pushing this more data analyst side of the transfers.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whatever the club has been doing this summer, it clearly seems to be working so far. The new signings have made a good impression and appear to have settled in really well with the rest of the squad.

We just need two or three more additions to really get the squad to the level and style Postecoglou wants, and hopefully we can see those players come in during this window.

Gabbanini is having big impact on Spurs recruitment

Gold reveals that he is now playing a key role in helping rebuild the squad to suit the needs of Ange Postecoglou, and is currently having ‘a big influence’ in the decisions that are made at the North London club.

The journalist states that Gabbanini has been in constant daily dialogue with Daniel Levy since Paraitic left the club and was even involved in Postecoglou’s first meeting with the club to discuss transfers, which also included Levy and Ryan Mason.

The 43-year-old is said to have a great eye for talent and is described as a ‘modern style of scout’, using data to back up what he sees from players.

Gold reveals that Gabbanini is not one to sit on the fence when it comes to evaluating players and often delivers a firm opinion after analysing the complete picture of a player, including their mentality and how they would fit into the system and the club’s culture.

The journalist adds that a number of clubs across Europe are monitoring the Italian’s situation in case the arrival of a new sporting director at Tottenham leads to his exit.

Spurs Web Opinion

Perhaps one of the reasons that Levy and Scott Munn are not in a hurry to hire a sporting director is that they are happy to grant more responsibility to Gabbanini and allow the Italian to work with Postecoglou.

We might even potentially see the 43-year-old being promoted to the role of head of recruitment over the coming weeks or months.

According to Il Messaggero (as relayed by Tutto Juve), Lazio may look to poach Tottenham duo Leonardo Gabbanini and Lorenzo Giani.

The report states that Maurizio Sarri wants Lazio to restructure their recruitment department and believes that Gabbanini and Giani would help the club to do so.

Both men arrived at Tottenham during the Fabio Paratici era, with Gabbanini joining as a chief scout from Watford in August of last year.

The 43-year-old has extensive experience in Italian football, having previously worked as Udinese’s chief scout and served as a youth coach at Fiorentina and Sampdoria.

Giani, meanwhile, worked as a scout for Paratici at Juventus and followed the Italian to North London.

Spurs could lose Gabbanini and Giani to Lazio

If Il Messaggero’s latest update is to be believed, Lazio seemingly believe that the two men could now be convinced to leave N17 following Paratici’s departure.

The publication asserts that Sarri has put the names of Gabbanini and Giani ‘on the table’ as the former Chelsea boss believes that the pair may help the club unearth young talent, who could be nurtured at the Stadio Olimpico.

Spurs Web Opinion

Gabbanini has a prominent role at Tottenham and there is no indication that the club want to replace him.

However, perhaps his position, along with Giani’s, might be thrown into doubt if a new sporting director comes through the door as the newcomer might want to fill those positions with the people he trusts.

Leonardo Gabbanini, who joined Tottenham as their new chief scout in the summer, has been speaking to the Italian press about life at the North London club.

It emerged back in August that Fabio Paratici had made Gabbanini Spurs’ new chief scout (The Athletic).

The appointment was part of a broader overhaul of Tottenham’s scouting department undertaken by the club’s managing director of football, with Gretar Steinsson being appointed as the performance director and Andy Scoulding also joining the club’s scouting team.

Gabbanini has now spoken about working in England and about the step up he made to Spurs.

The 42-year-old told Radio Firenze Viola (as translated by Sport Witness): “It’s going well, it’s a completely different reality. I’ve been working there (England) for five years. Before, I was at Watford as a Chief Scout.

“Now at Tottenham, it’s a different world, there’s very high value in everything you do. In short, it’s hard, but it also gives great satisfaction.”

Gabbanini was also asked about Pierluigi Gollini, who struggled to get game time during his season-long loan spell at Tottenham in 2021-22.

It did not come as a surprise when Spurs decided not to take up the option to buy the Italian permanently in the summer, with the goalkeeper being loaned out to Fiorentina over the summer.

Gabbanini explained that Spurs ‘believed in Gollini a lot’ and that ‘a year behind Lloris was not easy’ for the 27-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

Gollini might have hoped to be Fiorentina’s number one this season but he has had to play second fiddle to Pietro Terracciano so far this season and has made a couple of mistakes when opportunities have come his way.

Perhaps, the lack of football at Spurs affected the 27-year-old’s confidence. Goalkeepers also need a level of continuity to be at their best, which the on-loan Atalanta man has not had for the last 18 months.

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Leonardo Gabbanini as the club’s new chief scout, according to The Athletic.

Gabbanini had been working in overseeing UK recruitment for Pozzo-owned clubs Watford and Udinese up until his departure in May and began working for the north Londoners last month.

The 42-year-old becomes the latest member of the club’s restructuring since Fabio Paratici’s arrival and has been tasked with helping to develop the structure of the scouting network under recent arrival, performance director Gretar Steinsson.

Football.London reported in January that Paratici wanted Tottenham’s scouting department to match other top clubs in the Premier League and in Europe with the aim of improving their efficiency in future transfer windows.

Coincidentally, Tottenham are set to complete the signing of Atalanta left wing-back Destiny Udogie this week (Evening Standard).

SpursWeb Opinion

Tottenham’s revamp on and off the pitch continues to move at an impressive rate with Paratici bringing in a number of new faces behind the scenes.

Along with Steinsson and Gabbanini, former Anderlecht coach Simon Davies has joined to be part of the academy setup, while Andy Scoulding moved from Rangers earlier in the summer.

Leonardo Gabbanini, who has previously coached Pierluigi Gollini, has said that the goalkeeper did well enough at Tottenham to have warranted more game time.

Gollini joined Tottenham from Atalanta on a season-long loan deal last summer, replacing Joe Hart as Hugo Lloris’ main understudy.

The goalkeeper did not make a single Premier League appearance for the Lilywhites, with all 10 of his appearances during the 2021/22 campaign coming in the Europa Conference League and domestic club competitions (Transfermarkt).

Gollini was seemingly a popular member of the dressing room at the North London club and even admitted back in May that he would be happy to extend his spell at Spurs, admitting that he feels ‘attached to the group’ of players at the club (DAZN Talks podcast).

However, Spurs decided not to take up the option to sign the 27-year-old permanently or extend his loan spell, and instead decided to bring in Fraser Forster as their new number two.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Gollini is set to leave Atalanta this summer and return to Fiorentina, where he came through the ranks as a youngster.

Gabbanini, who was the head of academy coaching at Fiorentina during Gollini’s time at the club’s youth system, has praised the way the goalkeeper conducted himself at Spurs despite having to play second fiddle to Lloris.

He told Firenze Viola about the Italy international: “I think he did well to go there because he had all the credentials to play. The fact is that they have a world champion goalkeeper, he has shown he respects him and he left because he could no longer be backup to Lloris.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Gollini would have known when he came to the club that he is not likely to play too many games but he was unlucky to play as little as he did, with Spurs being eliminated from the Europa Conference League in bizarre circumstances.

The Italian conducted himself with dignity and class last season and proved to be a real team man despite the frustration he might have felt at his situation. Most Spurs fans will be rooting for him to succeed at Fiorentina.
