Former Tottenham player Jack Clarke is on fire for Sunderland right now, and is attracting a lot of attention from Premier League clubs. If he is sold, it is thought Spurs could receive a cash injection thanks to a clause in the deal to sell him to the Black Cats.

Tottenham signed Jack Clarke from Leeds United back in 2019, but never managed to really get going for the Lilywhites. In total, he made just four first-team appearances for Spurs over the years (Transfermarkt), with the majority of his time spent out on loan.

Loan spells at QPR and Stoke were followed by a successful stint with Sunderland. That move became permanent last summer, in a deal believed to be worth up to £10m (Alasdair Gold).

Since then, Clarke has gone from strength to strength, scoring goals for fun and looking like one of the best players in the Championship over the last two seasons.

Spurs may have a 50% sell-on clause for Clarke

Naturally, that kind of form is going to attract attention, and Sunderland are now thought to be fighting off interest from the likes of Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Burnley for their star man.

That’s according to a report from TeamTalk, who claim a number of Premier League clubs are keen to swoop for Clarke. It is believed Sunderland value the 22-year-old at “around the £20m mark,” and that could be great news for Spurs.

Apparently, there is a clause in the original deal to sell Clarke that guarantees Tottenham a sell-on percentage.

While the “cut of a future sale has not been disclosed,” the report suggests it could be “as high as 50%,” which would significantly offset the investment the North London club originally made in the youngster.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s great to see Jack Clarke thriving at Sunderland and it’s surely only a matter of time before he is back in the Premier League, either with or without the Black Cats.

It will be interesting to see whether they can hold on to him in January, but any club that snaps him up will be getting a top talent.

Alasdair Gold has revealed that it was Daniel Levy who called Eric Dier in for a meeting in an apparent effort to move him on before the summer transfer window shut.

Ange Postecoglou has clearly signalled to Dier that he is not part of his plans by omitting the centre-back from every single one of Tottenham’s matchday squads so far this season.

In fact, even 18-year-old summer signing, Ashley Phillips, was named on the bench ahead of the England international for the Lilywhites’ trip to Turf Moor for the last match.

The Telegraph revealed last week that Dier held a meeting with chairman Levy after being overlooked by Postecoglou. The report explained that while the details of the pair’s conversation were kept private, it was likely to do with the 29-year-old’s status in the squad and his future.

Football Insider even claimed a couple of days ago that Spurs have already decided to offload Dier in January and replace him with Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

Eric Dier wants to fight for his place at Tottenham

Gold has now shed more light on the meeting that the experienced Tottenham star had with the club chairman.

The journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “From what I understand it was Eric Dier who was called in for a meeting with Daniel Levy. Presumably, it was in an effort to move him on before the windows closed.

“Dier wants to fight for his place under Postecoglou but would have accepted a loan move had one arrived for him in order to get game time – reports suggesting a Burnley loan offer arrived were dismissed by the club at the time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect that the reason Dier wants to run his contract down is that he wants to move abroad next summer, and rightly believes that he will have a lot more options to choose from if he is a free agent.

That is probably why the 29-year-old was in favour of a loan move this summer rather than a permanent one.

In his post-match press conference this evening, Ange Postecoglou commended his players for bouncing back after the defeat in midweek and also for going a goal behind against Burnley. However, the Tottenham manager also highlighted an area he wants to see improvement in.

After crashing out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night in a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, it’s safe to say Spurs needed a big reaction today.

Back on Premier League duty and with an unbeaten start to maintain, Ange Postecoglou‘s side put the disappointment of the cup defeat firmly behind them.

Fans may have been worried, however, when Lyle Foster gave Burnley the lead after four minutes at Turf Moor this afternoon. Any concern didn’t last long though, as Spurs captain Heung-min Son equalised a little over ten minutes later.

Cristian Romero gave the away side the lead just before half-time, giving the second half a very different complexion indeed. And it was Spurs who came out and dominated the game from there on out.

A lovely goal from outside the box for James Maddison made things all the more comfortable for Spurs, before a Son double cemented not only the three points, but also his hat-trick.

Postecoglou wanted a reaction from his players

Today was obviously a fantastic result for Tottenham, but also showed just how strong-willed the team can be when the pressure is on. And that’s exactly what Postecoglou has recognised in his press conference after the game.

He told Football.London: “It was good today for sure. Obviously going a goal down again you get tested and particularly after midweek you’re looking for what kind of reaction the lads have.

“I thought they were outstanding in just staying really calm and clear-headed and playing our football and we grew into the game.

“Once we got to grips with it I think thought we were dominant in just about every area. Maybe a little bit wasteful in the first half in the front third but in the second half we got really clinical. I can’t praise the players highly enough in the way they navigated the challenges we had today.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Another win in the bag and further proof that goals are not going to be hard to come by for this new-look Spurs team. Postecoglou has got to be happy with the way his team responded to the setback in midweek, and the challenge of coming from a goal behind, away from home.

Tottenham Hotspur certainly suffered no Carabao Cup hangover in the Burnley sunshine today as the much-changed Ange Postecoglou XI recorded a 5-2 victory.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

BURNLEY, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 02: Heung-Min Son of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates with teammate James Maddison after scoring the team’s fourth goal during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor on September 02, 2023 in Burnley, England. (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images)

Changing the team

Ange Postecoglou changed the team back to what is likely his first-choice, and Spurs purred more than ever before this season. Despite going behind early and finding themselves in a 1-1 battle for a long time, Spurs eventually ran away with the game, scoring five in the process. I know Postecoglou wanted to take a look at some of his squad players, but it does make you wonder what could have been achieved by changing just half the team, rather than 9 players.

Heung-min Son number 9

Richarlison was benched today and Heung-min Son was handed the role of number 9 – and boy, did he do well! Even though he was rather quiet and didn’t see a huge amount of the ball for large parts of the game, he burst into life once Spurs made their way into the final third. He also seemed to enjoy life on the shoulder of the defence a lot more than Richarlison has in recent weeks. It leaves Postecoglou with a big question, who is his first-choice striker moving forward?

Tottenham are fun, Tottenham are chaos

Whatever happens this season, Tottenham are going to be the most entertaining team to watch all year long. Yes, there is something to be said of the dominance of Man City or the plucky electricity of Brighton, but Spurs are offering excitement at both ends. All out attack and last-ditch defending. What’s not to like? After all, we are here to be entertained, are we not?

Goal from all over the pitch

Something that Postecoglou seems to have achieved (and something Antonio Conte struggled to) is creating goals all over the pitch. Not only are Sonny, Kulusevski, and Richarlison all now off the mark this season, but Tottenham also have goals from Maddison, Emerson Royal, Romero, Pape Matar Sarr, and Ben Davies (kind of). For so long, Harry Kane has covered the weight of the goalscoring and match-winning burden, but now it’s being shared, which I imagine is a lot harder to play against.

Up to second in the table

Postecoglou won’t like to look at the table so early, and even fans shouldn’t really, but 10 points from 12, including Brentford away and a game against Man United. Sitting second in the Premier League is fun, whatever point of the season it may be. However, it should also be a warning sign. We all know that Mourinho and Conte both also enjoyed positive starts to seasons, as did Nuno Espirito Santo, so there is a lot more work to be done for Postecoglou and his side.

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from their Carabao Cup defeat in style with a 5-2 win over Burnley this afternoon in the Premier League.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Tottenham player ratings vs Burnley

Guglielmo Vicario – 7.5 – Didn’t have a huge amount to do, but he stood up when needed. That tip over the bar at 3-1 was huge to keep the tide in Tottenham’s favour. Was superb with the ball at his feet too.

Pedro Porro – 7.5 – Superb going forward, especially when playing those balls in behind to Sonny. Worrying defending at times as Burnley knocked it past him for fun at times. We’ll let it slide today as he added more going forward than he took away at the other end.

Cristian Romero – 8.5 – An absolute brick wall today. He pressed and chopped away at Burnley on the front foot today and turned over possession for fun. Also defended extremely well while running full pace towards his own goal. Then there’s the small matter of that finish! Questionable defending for Burnley’s second but it didn’t matter too much in the end.

Micky Van de Ven – 8 – Had a much quieter game than Romero but he was by no means less impressive. His defending looks simple at times, but that’s only because he makes it look at way. So progressive on the ball down that left side too.

Destiny Udogie – 8 – He plays with the maturity of a left-back a decade older. So composed on the ball in all areas of the pitch. Lets very little past him defensively and adds so much going forward, including that assist he worked so hard for in the build-up to Maddison’s goal.

Yves Bissouma – 7.5 – This is only because he has set such high standards for himself, but Bissouma wasn’t quite as composed today. Still had some breathtaking moments, but also gave the ball away a fair few times. In fairness, this usually occurs when he’s trying to make something happen.

Pape Matar Sarr – 7.5 – Restricted himself a little with that silly yellow card for throwing the ball away, but he was always available as a driving force down the right side of midfield. Like Udogie, he seems far beyond his years on the pitch.

James Maddison – 9 – What a player. We talked so much about Spurs replacing Harry Kane in the number 9 role, but Maddison has well and truly replaced him as a talisman. Everything good Spurs do goes through this man. And what a well-taken goal that was. Could have been even more today.

Dejan Kulusevski – 8 – A tricky rating to give. Kulusevski was arguably one of Tottenham’s most dangerous players today, such was the consistency with which he got into amazing positions. 99% of what he did was perfect, but I would have loved to see a slightly better final pass/shot.

Heung-min Son – 10 – Hard to give anything else for a hat-trick. Son had a quiet game in truth, but world-class number nines can have quiet games and still pop up as the match winner. He seemed to take to the system a little better than Richarlison has.

Manor Solomon – 8 – Two assists, both for Sonny – could be the making of a partnership there. He looked wasteful for the first half an hour but settled into the game and started bringing others into play more, which is when Spurs started thriving. A great first start of the season.

Substitutes:

Ivan Perisic – 6 – Came on as an experienced head to see the game out and used the ball well on the left side of attack.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6 – Postecoglou seems to like Hojbjerg as a calming presence in midfield when the younger players need to see a result out.

Richarlison – 6 – Came on once the game was already won and things were a little flat. I wonder whether he might get a chance at left wing rather than number nine next week.

Oliver Skipp – N/A

Emerson Royal – N/A

Will Spurs remain unbeaten in the Premier League?

After such a poor display, it is hardly surprising the Australian has made wholesale changes to his team to face Vincent Kompany’s top flight newcomers.

A win would see Ange Postecoglou equal the most points a manager has amassed in their first four Premier League games in charge of Tottenham (10), set by Harry Redknapp, Tim Sherwood and Antonio Conte.

This is the team who he has picked that face the Clarets

Tottenham: Vicario, Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie, Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison, Kulusevski, Son, Solomon

Subs: Skipp, Richarlison, Højbjerg, Forster, Emerson Royal, Davies, Sánchez, Perisic, Phillips

Had I written this earlier in the week, I would have been feeling a lot more upbeat. However, after the Fulham debacle in the League Cup, my excitement has been somewhat dampened.

Admittedly, the one will have very little impact on the other – the first eleven will retake their rightful places on the field and, hopefully, normal service will resume.

However, there is a possibility that a seed of negativity may be sewn after that performance. It is up to Ange to ensure that the wave upon which the team were riding continues to gather momentum.

Somewhat bizarrely, fixtures before an international break assume much greater significance. No one wants to be mulling over a poor performance for a fortnight before having the opportunity to make amends. Thus, I expect Tottenham to be all guns blazing when they get to Turf Moor on Saturday.

Predicted Line-up

If an element of Tuesday’s exercise was to give players considered ‘more peripheral’ the opportunity to stake a claim for a first-team spot, it is fair to say that none of them seized that chance. Instead, it served to emphasise why they are back up, and in some cases – surplus to requirement.

Therefore, I expect Postecoglou to start the same eleven that started at Bournemouth. Vicario has grown in confidence with every match and the partnership of Romero and Van de Ven is developing nicely. Assuming he is fit, Destiny Udogie will remain at left back, with Pedro Porro on the right.

In the centre of the park, our two main assets of Maddison and Bissouma will be hard to dislodge, while Pape Sarr is proving to be an impressive player, while we wait for the return of Rodrigo Bentancur.

On the right Dejan Kulusevski will hopefully feel energised by his goal in the last league game and Son will continue to work his way back into form on the left.

Due to any viable alternative (now that Dane Scarlett have moved to Ipswich), Richarlison will start in the middle, hoping that the goal in midweek might possibly kickstart his Tottenham career.

Key Player (home) James Maddison

I have to be honest, I knew James Maddison was a good player, but I did not know how good an overall individual we had bought.

It is clear that he sees himself as the talisman of the team and wants to be the one to turn games in our favour. It speaks volumes of the man that he was eager to take the number 10 shirt as soon as possible.

He also has developed a connection with the fans almost instantly and he will know that Tuesday hurt them. Therefore, I expect him to get on the ball an awful lot in this game and try and dictate the tempo of play and restore the momentum we had previously developed.

Burnley will leave gaps in the midfield and I expect Maddison to exploit those fully.

Opposition Form

Burnley away has a whole new feel to it these days. Gone are the days of Sean Dyche’s boys sledgehammering their way to results in blustery conditions.

Clad in a stylish blazer and pristine white trainers, Vincent Kompany has endeavoured to inject a bit more ‘culture’ on the pitch as well. Last season, the Belgian performed an astonishing feat in returning Burnley to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

In doing so, he revamped the style of play and only lost three league games all season – scoring more, and conceding less, than any of their rivals (Sky Sports).

However, they have found their return to the Premier League a tough one so far, losing both of their games. Admittedly, these were against Manchester City and Villa, but the fact that they looked, in the most part, like training games would be the real concern. This is their third home game on the spin and they will be determined to register their first point of the season.

Key Player (away) Josh Cullen

Burnley are a tricky side to gauge at the moment. They did excellently in the Championship last season, but a lot of their star players were on loan and are no longer at the club. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Nathan Tella and Ian Maatsen have all returned to their ‘parent’ clubs and the first eleven does not look as strong without them (Transfermarkt).

Therefore, I am going to select their ever-present central midfielder and captain as their key player – Josh Cullen.

Kompany knew Cullen from his Anderlecht days and he is a mainstay in their team – playing every minute so far this season (Sofascore).

However, playing in a two with Sander Bergh will not be easy in the Premiership, as Tottenham discovered last season.

He will have his work cut out having to cope with the energy of Sarr, the guile of Maddison and the brilliance of Bissouma. If the Burnley midfield get dominated and overrun, they will be in for a very tough afternoon.

Prediction

No one would have been happy with the midweek result, least of all Ange himself. I feel a few home truths will have been delivered and the players who will start on Saturday will be energised and hungry to get the season back on track.

I feel like Burnley of old, sitting in a low block, would have potentially caused us problems, but this new-look Clarets team try to ‘play football’ and I think our attacking personnel will be able to exploit that. I am expecting a fast start and for the intensity to not diminish.

Despite the hiccup at Craven Cottage expect the away fans to continue their brilliant and vociferous support for the manager and the players, if not the ownership.

Final Score: Burnley 0 – 4 Tottenham

It has now been confirmed that Lo Celso was removed due to injury, after only earning his first Premier League minutes of the season off the bench last week against Bournemouth.

Postecoglou sat down for a press conference this afternoon on deadline day ahead of the trip to Turf Moor. Such is the protocol, the media are informed of the availability of the Spurs squad ahead of the clash against Vincent Kompany’s side.

Lo Celso the only new injury for Tottenham

He revealed that Lo Celso has a minor strain, but it is nothing to worry about and he should recover during the upcoming international break.

He said (Football London): “From the other night, the only one who is missing is Gio Lo Celso. He got a quad strain which is why we took him off at half-time. Nothing too serious but with the international break coming [there’s time to recover].”

Over the last week, various publications have revealed that Tottenham are trying to offload the 29-year-old before Friday night’s transfer deadline (90 min).

A couple of days ago, it was reported that Dier had emerged as a late target for German giants, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund (Kaveh Solhekol – Football Daily) while Fulham have also been credited with an interest in the England international (talkSPORT).

Burney enter race for Eric Dier – Spurs reject an offer

If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, Vincent Kompany is keen to strengthen Burnley’s backline before the transfer window shuts and has identified Dier as a target.

The outlet adds that the Clarets submitted a loan offer for the 29-year-old, which has been turned down by Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Dier having 12 months left on his contract, it makes no sense for Spurs to consider loaning him out. The Lilywhites would be looking to finalise a permanent sale before Friday evening’s deadline but the decision would ultimately rest with the centre-back.

The Daily Mail have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley are both eyeing a move for FC Nordsjaelland attacker Ernest Nuamah.

Nuamah has created waves in the Danish top flight since joining Nordsjaelland back in January of last year, with the wide-forward netting 15 goals and registering four assists across all competitions last season (Transfermarkt).

The 19-year-old has started the new campaign with a bang, with four goals and an assist in the first four league games, and his performances have seemingly caught the eye of clubs in the Premier League as well as around Europe.

Tottenham and Burnley both like Ernest Nuamah

The Mail claim that Spurs are among Nuamah’s admirers and have made an enquiry about the player but it is Burnley who are the ‘most advanced’ with their interest.

The report adds that Everton are also fans of the Ghana international but his price tag of £22m is expected to prove prohibitive for the Toffees.

The outlet asserts that the likes of AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain also have their eye on the Nordsjaelland starlet.

The one thing Postecoglou might have realised following the Man United and Brentford games is that he needs one more wide player who is aggressive in one vs one situations.

While Son is a world-class finisher, he is no longer the sort of ball carrier he was in his earlier in his career. Ange does have an option on the bench in Solomon, but he might want another top-notch dribbler in the squad, particularly with Gil injured.

Last season alone, Furuhashi bagged 34 goals in all competitions for Celtic (Transfermarkt) and was instrumental in helping Ange Postecoglou achieve an historic treble with the Scottish giants.

Postecoglou, of course, has now moved on and taken over the top job at Tottenham. The Australian has a busy summer ahead of him as he looks to strengthen a Spurs side which disappointed on all fronts last term.

It has already been reported by The Sun that Postecoglou is keen to be reunited with the Japan international in North London.

However, it is thought the player has admirers in Italy, France, and Spain, too.

Spurs may have to battle Burnley in Furuhashi race

Now, it has emerged that Burnley have entered the race to sign Kyogo Furuhashi this summer as the Clarets look to add firepower that can keep them in the Premier League.

That’s according to the Daily Record, who claim Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is “targeting” the Celtic striker during this transfer window.

Kompany is heading into the top flight without Burnley legend Ashley Barnes, and Nathan Tella, whose loan spell from Southampton has come to an end.

Apparently, Furuhashi is on Kompany’s “hit-list” of strikers who he will look to sign if a permanent move for Tella cannot be secured.

It is believed new Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is “desperate” to keep the marksman at the club, but is “braced for approaches” from England.

Spurs Web Opinion

That goalscoring record is mightily impressive, but we have to be wary of how well those numbers in the SPL would translate to attacking returns in the Premier League.

I’m sure Postecoglou would love to work with Furuhashi again, but I can’t see it being a transfer we pursue too keenly.

Vincent Kompany has insisted that he has made the right decision in signing a new five-year contract with Burnley.

Kompany has guided the Clarets back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following their relegation last season and topped the table with an impressive 101 points and only three defeats.

The 37-year-old former Belgium international’s first taste of life as a manager came at Anderlecht, a post he held for two years before leaving by mutual consent in May 2022.

Kompany had been linked with the head coach vacancy at Tottenham Hotspur with the north Londoners seeking a new manager since the departure of Antonio Conte in late March.

Fabrizio Romano claimed that the ex-Manchester City player had held positive talks with Tottenham over the vacancy, while the Daily Mail’s chief football correspondent Sami Mokbel took to Twitter yesterday to confirm that while Spurs did have a genuine interest, it was more exploratory than anything concrete.

Kompany said, as quoted by the Evening Standard: “I still had three or four years left and it’s not something I went chasing but there is a pragmatic reason for signing the new deal,”

“For my pathway, this is the right decision, but it helps when we try and recruit players.

“When I’m trying to convince a player to come here it’s easier just after I have signed a new deal.

“We have had a massive advantage planning for next season, because we have known about promotion of a long time.

“But we were going to lose that if people were waiting for me to come out with a statement.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Kompany has made the right choice to continue his managerial career at Burnley, his stock is rising after a successful season and he will be given time to establish the Clarets back in the Premier League.

A move to Tottenham would have seen him placed under an intense spotlight to turn around their fortunes and potentially jeopardise his chances of managing Manchester City in the future.

While Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new manager continues, Burnley were busy yesterday confirming the news that Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year contract at Turf Moor.

Kompany has led the Clarets back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after arriving from Belgian side Anderlecht last summer with the Clarets achieving promotion back to the top flight with seven games to spare before sealing the Championship title.

The 37-year-old was said to have held positive talks with Tottenham over the possibility of replacing Antonio Conte in north London (Fabrizio Romano), however, he has pledged his future to Burnley with a new five-year deal.

The Daily Mail’s chief football correspondent Sami Mokbel took to Twitter yesterday to confirm that while Tottenham did have a genuine interest in the former Manchester City central defender, it was more exploratory than anything concrete.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has previously backed Kompany to return to the Etihad one day as manager, having played for City for eleven years and winning the Premier League title on four occasions (Sky Sports).

Kompany is building an impressive reputation and now has the opportunity to guide Burnley into the Premier League next season where he will be keen to at least keep them in the top flight with Manchester City among those likely to be keeping tabs on his progress.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a whole host of managers to take over the vacant head coach role in north London following the departure of Antonio Conte in March.

Vincent Kompany has been one name said to have been on Tottenham’s shortlist is Vincent Kompany after the Belgian secured Burnley’s return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Fabrizio Romano claimed on his YouTube channel late last month that Tottenham had held conversations with the former Manchester City defender over the role in N17.

Burnley have today announced that the 37-year-old has signed a new five-year contract at Turf Moor in what has been described as ‘to extend his commitment with the club.’

Cristian Stellini was initially given the responsibility to lead the side for the remainder of the campaign in the wake of Conte’s exit, but also found himself surplus to requirements after the 6-1 thrashing at Newcastle United.

Ryan Mason was instead placed in charge for the last handful of matches and secured his three points of his second stint in charge yesterday with the 1-0 win against Crystal Palace courtesy of Harry Kane’s first-half header.

Kompany said via a statement on the official Burnley site: “Burnley and Turf Moor felt right pretty much from the start – so it also feels right to sign for the next five years.

“Together with the fans we have made Turf Moor a fortress again and continue to look forward to the future and the job of making Burnley better with every step.”

Tottenham are said to have Julian Nagelsmann in their sights as their number one target to take charge, however, they will have to pay up to £10 million in compensation fees to Bayern Munich if they are to hire the young coach (Telegraph).

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot is reported to also be an alternative for the vacancy (The Independent).

SpursWeb Opinion

Kompany has made an impressive start to his managerial career in England, however, the Tottenham job has come too soon for him.  He will be judged further on his exploits with the Clarets next season when they are back with the big boys in the Premier League.

While Nageslmann is also a young manager, he has more top-flight experience compared to Kompany and has to be Tottenham’s priority to bring back attack-minded, pressing football.

However, over recent weeks, there have been doubts raised over whether the Belgian would be around to take charge of the side in the top flight next season, with his name being on Tottenham and Chelsea’s shortlists ahead of the summer (Football Insider).

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel on Monday that Spurs have already spoken to the Manchester City legend’s representatives regarding their managerial vacancy.

However, The Sun have now handed a blow to Tottenham in their pursuit of Kompany by revealing that the 37-year-old has told his backroom staff that he will be at Turf Moor next season.

The Clarets boss allegedly wants to ‘see the job through’ at the club after the Burnley chiefs promised to back him in the transfer market this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on what we have been reading over the last few weeks, it does appear as if Kompany is the backup option Tottenham have identified in case Nagelsmann proves to be out of their reach.

So, this development does come as a blow to the North London club. However, I am not surprised that Kompany is hesitant to jump into a big job straight away, having seen how it worked out for the likes of Frank Lampard.

Tottenham Hotspur have Burnley manager Vincent Kompany on their shortlist as part of their search for the vacant head coach position, however, some within the club’s hierarchy have concerns over his inexperience, according to the Daily Mail.

The Belgian took over at Burnley last summer and has guided the Clarets back to the Premier League at the first time of asking with his side having lost just two games in the Championship to date in 41 matches to date.

Kompany is under contract at Turf Moor for another three years, however, they are prepared to offer the former central defender a new deal in order to try to keep him at the club.

Spurs are said to believe they can follow in the footsteps of rivals Arsenal, who appointed Mikel Arteta without any prior management experience and has transformed the fortunes of the Gunners as they battle Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Kompany is also reported to have admirers at Chelsea, who are also in the process of recruiting a manager following the dismissal of Graham Potter and have already appointed Frank Lampard on an interim basis for the remainder of the campaign (The Times).

SpursWeb Opinion

Tottenham need to start making advances for whoever they consider being the man to replace Antonio Conte, or could find themselves way down in the pecking order with a number of clubs expected to be on the lookout come the summer.

Many fans still cannot understand why Mauricio Pochettino is not on the managerial shortlist given his previous affinity with the supporters and players, while some may point out to how it ended for the Argentine in north London, it is more than fair to point out the lack of support he received in multiple transfer windows in the build-up to his dismissal.

Pochettino warned of the rebuild which was needed and his words still haunt the fans to this day and those crying out for a return of attacking, pressing football – which Daniel Levy promised we would go back to following the exit of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Sun went one step further, reporting last Wednesday that the Manchester City legend has now shot up to the top of Spurs’ wishlist.

The publication claimed that the Tottenham hierarchy have been ‘blown away’ by the work that Kompany has done since taking over at Burnley and the football he has got the Clarets playing.

The Daily Mail subsequently reported last Thursday (April 13) that Daniel Levy has a ‘definite fancy’ for the 36-year-old even though members of the Tottenham board are pushing the cases of other candidates.

If The Times’ latest update is to be believed, Kompany also has admirers among the Chelsea hierarchy, who are now in the process of narrowing down their search for a new head coach.

The report explains the West London club have already spoken to Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann, and are now expected to talk to other candidates before settling on their top target.

The report adds that Mauricio Pochettino, Luciano Spalletti and Rúben Amorim are also on the Blues’ shortlist.

Spurs Web Opinion

It appears as if both Tottenham and Chelsea essentially have the same shortlist, which is not surprising.

Nagelsmann and Enrique seem to be the two leading candidates for the Chelsea job but I suspect that Spurs would not be too keen on the Spaniard unless Paratici is cleared off his charges and resumes his role as managing director.

It would be quite understandable if Levy and co are leaning towards up, and coming managers like Kompany and Slot, given how the Mourinho and Conte experiments have backfired.

Kompany has managed to achieve that while getting his side to play attacking, possession-based football, which is a major departure from what we have seen from the club over many years under Sean Dyche.

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that in light of the job that the Belgian has done at Turf Moor, he has emerged as one of the top names on Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Antonio Conte (The Daily Star).

However, this was contradicted by The Independent, who claimed last week that the Lilywhites’ interest in the 36-year-old had been ‘overstated’, with other candidates said to be preferred by the North London club.

Parlour believes that even if Spurs come calling, Kompany should reject their advances and continue building on his good work at Burnley.

The Arsenal legend told talkSPORT Breakfast (11/04/23): “If I was him (Kompany), I would stay where he is. Someone has given him an opportunity to be a manager. I think he has done a great job.

“Four or five years down the line. I am sure when Pep Guardiola says ‘That’s it, I am not being manager anymore’. I am sure, he will then be the Manchester City manager. He will be the Man City manager, I should imagine.

“But, at the moment, he is learning his trade still. He has been at a Burnley team that’s brilliant. I would stay where he is.

“I know he’s been linked to Spurs and to quite a few clubs. But just stay where you are. Enjoy it and you can become a Burnley legend.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham might hold conversations with Kompany to learn more about him and to see if he fits the profile they are looking for.

However, I do not think the Belgian would be anything more than a fallback option for Spurs in the event that their top two or three targets prove out of reach.

Tottenham have to get their next appointment right after the missteps over the last few years and they simply cannot afford to take a risk on a manager who is unproven at the top level.

The Tottenham chiefs have allegedly received ‘glowing reports’ about the Belgian, who is said to be seen by some at the North London club as a manager who can give the club ‘a new dimension’.

It is explained that Spurs have watched Pep Guardiola’s former number two, Mikel Arteta, turn Arsenal into title contenders and are hopeful that Kompany could have the same effect at N17, having spent a long time playing under the Manchester City boss.

The Sun add that the 36-year-old would be ‘ready to listen’ to Tottenham if they made a move as he fears that Burnley may not have the funds needed to do well in the Premier League next season.

Spurs Web Opinion

Kompany would be quite a risky appointment as we have seen several talented young managers fail to make the required step up from the Championship to the Premier League.

While the Belgian might initially command the Tottenham dressing room’s respect, I fear that doubts might start creeping in as soon as the team hit a bad patch, given the 36-year-old’s lack of managerial pedigree.

Alan Brazil has claimed that Vincent Kompany has turned down an approach from Tottenham Hotspur.

With Cristian Stellini being tasked with steering the ship until the end of the season, alongside Ryan Mason, Spurs have bought themselves a few weeks to hunt for their next head coach.

A whole host of managers across Europe have been linked with the Tottenham job over the last few weeks, with Kompany’s name also being mentioned recently.

In fact, The Sun reported on Thursday that the Manchester City legend has now emerged as a leading contender to take over from Antonio Conte.

The report stated that Daniel Levy has been impressed with the exciting brand of football that Kompany has got Burnley playing, and asserted that the Belgian would be open to taking over at the North London club.

However, bizarrely, Brazil has now stated that the 36-year-old manager has already knocked back Tottenham’s approach.

When asked about Spurs’ rumoured interest in Kompany, the pundit told talkSPORT (6:24am, March 31, 2023): “Rewind four weeks ago. I told you that four weeks ago. He turned it down.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I doubt Alan Brazil would have some insider information on this matter that journalists close to Tottenham and Burnley do not. So, we should take this claim with a pinch of salt.

However, it is not entirely impossible that Belgium would reject the Spurs job as he might not want to take too big a step too soon in his career, having seen how some other managers like Lampard have failed to make the step up to a big Premier League job.
