Tim Ream has insisted that there was no truth to the speculation linking Marco Silva with the Tottenham job during the summer.

There were a number of candidates who were mooted as potential replacements for Antonio Conte at Tottenham before the club eventually hired Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian was not really a popular choice among some sections of the Spurs fan base when the appointment was made, but he quickly became a fan favourite and has shown signs that he is the man to take the club back to the top table.

Silva was one of the managers reported as a target for Spurs in the summer, with The Telegraph claiming back in May that the Portuguese coach was part of the North London club’s three-man shortlist, alongside Postecolgou and Luis Enrique.

The 46-year-old ended up staying at Fulham and he signed a new contract at Craven Cottage last week.  Ream has now insisted that there was never a serious chance of him joining Spurs in the summer.

Marco Silva was never going to join Tottenham

The Fulham vice-captain told The American Dream Podcast: “When you’re not sure if the manager will be there past the summer, if he doesn’t sign a contract extension now, there’ll always be rumblings if managers get sacked at other clubs.

“It happened over the summer with Tottenham when he was linked with that job through random sources which wasn’t true by the way. It puts everyone a bit more at ease.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham might have spoken to Silva in the summer as the club would have wanted to due their due diligence on various candidates before deciding on their top choice.

However, the Portuguese coach would not have been near the top of their list and at no point did he seemingly come close to getting the job.

James Maddison has admitted that he is delighted to finally get his first goal contribution at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having heard quite a bit about how all of his goals and assists had come away from home until Monday’s game.

Maddison was once again Tottenham’s most potent attacking threat against Fulham, with the attacking midfielder picking up the ball in dangerous areas in the first half and being at his creative best.

The former Leicester man got the home side’s second goal in 54 minutes, slotting home calmly into the far corner past Bernd Leno after being played through on goal by Son Heung-min.

It was the 26-year-old’s eighth goal contribution of the season (three goals and four assists) but it was the first one at home.

James Maddison is in good spirits at Tottenham

Maddison spoke to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (as relayed by Football.London) after the 2-0 win, starting the interview with a joke before going on to admit his delight at getting off the mark at home.

At the start of the conversation when the host Dave Jones asked a question, the Tottenham man said: “I can actually hear Marco Silva’s interview in my ear now.”

When Jamie Carragher asked what Silva was saying, Maddison joked: “I think he’s saying Maddison’s goal was excellent.”

The attacking midfielder then went on to remark that he was relieved to get off the mark in front of the home fans.

When asked about getting on the scoresheet, he said: “I’m really happy. All of my goal contributions have been away from home and I keep seeing the stats popping up about it.

“It’s nice to get off the mark here with a convincing performance and a solid win that puts us back of the table, so I’m relatively happy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is still early days, there are already signs that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is becoming quite a fortress, with four wins from four until now.

There is no doubt that teams will not look forward to coming to the venue this season, given the atmosphere we have seen during the four matches so far.

Marco Silva has been extremely impressed with Spurs’ performances so far this season and admitted that a big challenge awaits his side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday.

Spurs will be happy to return to home comforts, three weeks on from the dramatic end to the clash against Liverpool, with there being a celebratory atmosphere around the stadium after the final whistle.

Ange Posteocolgou’s men will be hoping to put on a show in front of their supporters and have the added incentive of trying to retake their place at the summit of the Premier League table.

Fulham have been a bit hit-and-miss this season and Silva admitted that his side face a tough task against their London rivals.

He said about the clash (via Football 365): “We look at the matches with the trust and belief of ourselves, respecting of course Tottenham. Tottenham is having an amazing start to the season, they are on the top of the table and it’s clear why.”

“Not just results but the way they have been achieving the results has been really good, we have to say credit to them.”

Will Fulham be Tottenham’s bogey team this year?

The Cottagers have the distinction of being the only side to beat Spurs this season, having overcome the Lilywhites on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup, but Silva admitted that the challenge on Monday will be quite different.

When asked about beating Tottenham earlier this season, he said: “Of course, they had a bad result – if I can say that – this season against us in the Carabao Cup at the Cottage. It’s a different scenario and a different competition as well, they have made some changes, we did as well.

“But it’s going to be tough, playing there they are in a good moment the way they have been playing and the connections between them are growing. It’s going to be a great challenge for us.

“When you play teams in another stadium of that quality it’s always a great challenge and it’s going to be there for sure. It’s going to demand really hard work from ourselves and really good organisation, we have the belief and the courage to play our way.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Silva is a good tactician and Fulham are more than capable of causing an upset if we are not switched on. We need to start on the front foot and look to score an early goal to make things a lot easier for ourselves.

The Telegraph have claimed that Marco Silva is one of the leading candidates to replace Antonio Conte at the helm at Tottenham.

The report reveals that Marco Silva is part of Tottenham‘s three-man shortlist, alongside Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou and former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique.

It is said that Daniel Levy is leading the managerial search and that the Spurs chairman is expected to explore all three options fully before making a final decision.

The Telegraph add that the North London club are expected to announce a new head coach before they resume their search for a new sporting director.

It is alleged that Silva, who has one year left to run on his contract at Craven Cottage, is currently in discussions with Fulham over a new deal after leading the club to an impressive tenth-place finish in the Premier League this season.

The publication adds that it is unclear whether the Cottagers would be prepared to deal with Spurs should the Portuguese coach wish to leave.

The release clause in the 45-year-old’s current contract is said to be around £6m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Silva has done an excellent job at Fulham and plays attacking football but his CV is distinctively average, which is why I am not sure why he would appeal to Tottenham.

The club would likely be aware that appointing the Portuguese coach will be perceived by the media and the fan base as an extremely unambitious move.

Tottenham Hotspur are not believed to have a number one target when it comes to their search for a new manager, but do have a variety of names they are considering for the role.

Since Antonio Conte left the club at the end of March, Tottenham fans have seen Cristian Stellini last just four games as interim manager before Ryan Mason took over as Acting Head Coach until the end of the season.

The process of finding a new permanent manager has been a disappointing one.

It has been in a similar vein to the summer of 2021 which saw multiple managers turn Spurs down before they settled on Nuno Espirito Santo, a man who was then sacked after just 124 days in charge.

The latest manager to reject Tottenham is Feyenoord‘s Arne Slot, who appears to be signing a new contract with his current club despite strong links to the Spurs role (Fabrizio Romano).

Now, a report from The Guardian suggests Tottenham do not have a standout contender for the vacant managerial role, but have plenty of names on the shortlist.

The “broader list of names” includes Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, who has a €15 million (£13 million) buyout clause this summer, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, Roberto De Zerbi, and Luis Enrique. However, it is expected to be “unlikely” that De Zerbi would leave Brighton for Spurs.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports News also believe Postecoglou, Luis Enrique, and De Zerbi are on Tottenham’s radar.

However, they also suggest Fulham’s Marco Silva is in consideration, along with former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter, and Brendan Rodgers.

Spurs Web Opinion

Out of those names, I would go for Ruben Amorim. His Sporting side caused us all sorts of problems in the Champions League, and they play very aggressive, attacking football.

That said, I really cannot see any manager leaving a job to come to us, so we may have to look at the unemployed options, of which you’d have to say Enrique is the best option.

TEAMtalk have revealed that the collapse of Arne Slot’s move to Tottenham is now causing panic at Fulham, with the Cottagers said to be concerned that the North London club could come after their head coach.

Soon after Antonio Conte’s sacking back in March, Marco Silva was reported to be one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist to replace the Italian (The Athletic).

Football Insider subsequently reported at the end of April that while Spurs did explore a move for the Portuguese coach, they did not make any concrete approach for him.

TEAMtalk have now suggested that Fulham are concerned that Tottenham could once again turn their gaze to Silva, who has guided the West London club to an impressive tenth-placed finish this season.

The publication states that with the 45-year-old set to enter the final year of his contract this June, the Cottagers are now working desperately to tie him down to a new deal.

TEAMtalk also quotes Graeme Bailey about the situation, with the journalist revealing that Fulham is indeed concerned about the fact that their head coach has been linked with the West Ham and Spurs jobs.

Bailey has told the outlet: “Fulham insist they are not worried about Silva and are confident that they are going to tie him down to a new deal.

“However, whilst confidence is there – it cannot be argued they are worried for as long as a new deal goes unsigned.

“They know West Ham are looking at alternatives to David Moyes and Silva is on their list. The Portuguese has also been talked about at Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Spurs would have ever really seriously considered a move for Silva.

With the Slot deal having collapsed, it appears likely that the North London club would turn their attention to one of Ange Postecoglou, Ruben Amorim or Luis Enrique.

However, the situation appears to have changed completely since, with Julian Nagelsmann now said to be at the top of Tottenham’s shortlist.

According to The Independent, Spurs are expected to try and persuade the German to take over, failing which they would turn their attention to Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Football Insider have now revealed that Tottenham did show interest in Silva, although the North London club did not make any concrete approach for the Portuguese coach.

The report adds that the 45-year-old is set to run into the final year of his contract this June and that Fulham are keen to tie him down to a long-term deal to ward off any interest.

The outlet asserts that the Craven Cottage hierarchy will intensify talks with Silva at the end of the season, with the West London club hopeful of reaching an agreement with their head coach.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Silva was never really a serious option for Spurs at any time.

While the Portuguese coach has done an excellent job at Craven Cottage, his spells at Hull City and Everton would likely deter any top clubs from considering an approach for the 45-year-old.

90 min reported on March 15 that Fulham are attempting to tie their head coach down to a new deal but the publication added that their efforts had stalled amidst interest from Spurs.

However, GiveMeSport contradicted that claim, reporting on the same day that the Cottagers are confident that they can tie the 45-year-old down to a new contract.

Bailey has now confirmed that Silva’s entourage have indeed put talks over his future on the back burner but insisted that the West London club expect their head coach to put pen on paper sooner rather than later.

The journalist told TEAMtalk: “Fulham are confident that Marco Silva will sign a contract extension despite talks stalling.

“Silva has just over 12 months on his current deal and the Cottagers are keen to reward their boss.

“After guiding Fulham out of the Championship at the first time of asking, they have now made a major impact on the Premier League’s top ten.

“His performance with Fulham has not gone unnoticed and links with Tottenham and Chelsea have emerged.

“It is understood his people have delayed talks for now.

“Despite this I am told Fulham believe that Silva will put pen to paper sooner rather than later.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would not be surprised if it is Silva’s entourage who are feeding the rumours about Tottenham’s and Chelsea’s interest to the press to improve their bargaining positioning while negotiating a new deal with Fulham.

I do not think that the former Hull City boss is likely to be near the top of either Spurs’ or the Blues’ wishlist.

90 min reported last week that Fulham are attempting to tie the Portuguese coach down to a new deal but the publication added that their efforts had stalled amidst interest from Spurs.

However, GiveMeSport contradicted that information a couple of days ago, insisting that the Cottagers are confident that they can tie the 45-year-old down to a new contract.

The publication suggested that West London club are aware that Silva is enjoying his time at the club and want to sort out his future so they can push ahead with plans to strengthen the squad ahead of next season.

The Portuguese coach has now insisted that he is fully focused on his project at Fulham.

When asked about the reports linking him with the Tottenham job, Silva said (via Fabrizio Romano): “I’m really pleased and happy in this football club, I’m happy with Fulham project.

“We have the ambition to do better, to improve, we want this club to keep growing. I trust this project.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no chance that Silva would be in Fabio Paratici’s top five candidates to take over from Conte as the Portuguese coach’s CV in the Premier League is far from impressive.

There were some serious question marks about the 45-year-old’s work at Everton and Hull City, and Fulham can quite easily suffer from second-season syndrome next season and go back down.

Silva has done a commendable job since taking over at Craven Cottage in 2021.

Not only did the Portuguese coach help the club win promotion to the top flight last season but the Cottagers have outperformed all expectations on their return to the Premier League, currently sitting ninth in the table.

One can argue that among the four Premier League managers who have been mooted as candidates for the Tottenham job, Silva’s CV is the least impressive.

To me, De Zerbi seems like the outstanding candidate for the job but it remains to be seen if the Italian will leave Brighton less than 12 months after taking over.

Fulham are looking to accelerate talks of a new contract with Marco Silva after the manager was linked with taking over at Tottenham Hotspur if Antonio Conte leaves the club, according to Football Insider.

Silva has been in charge of Fulham since the summer of 2021, and led the London club to promotion from the Championship last season. He has overseen an impressive first season back in the top flight for the Cottagers with Fulham currently in eighth place in the Premier League and looking relatively safe from avoiding the drop.

Conte’s time at Tottenham has descended into something of a messy situation of late, with results and performances on the pitch frustrating many fans. The Italian’s contract expires at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether he will extend his stay.

While Conte himself has admitted he could be relieved of his duties before the end of the campaign (90min), there are reports suggesting he will be left in the role until the season ends in the hopes of securing a top four finish for Spurs (Daily Mail).

Silva’s impressive work in West London has not gone unnoticed and it was recently claimed he was the top target for Spurs when it comes to replacing Conte (The Sun).

Football Insider suggests Fulham are doing all they can to prevent this from happening. It is thought the club has held talks with Silva regarding a new contract, and are keen to “accelerate negotiations” to put an end to the speculation.

Silva has previously told Football Daily that he is “very happy” at Fulham despite the links to Tottenham, but it sounds like his current club are going to “pull out all the stops” to ensure he stays happy.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do like the work Silva has done at Fulham, but I’m not sure we’ve seen enough to suggest that he would be ready for the job at Spurs.

We have to be careful that this isn’t just a bit of a fluke with Fulham this year, and for that reason I would be wary of hiring Silva to replace Conte.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next head coach of Tottenham Hotspur to replace Antonio Conte at the end of the season, according to The Sun.

Conte’s future at Tottenham has been under question and the Italian is set to meet with the Spurs board in April to discuss his future with both parties fully aware that his time at the club is coming to an end (The Athletic).

The 53-year-old’s contract in N17 expires at the end of the season and a mix of off-field and on-field factors are said to have played their part ahead of the talks taking place early next month.

Silva was appointed as Fulham manager in July 2021, having signed a three-year deal with the Cottagers and guided them to promotion last season and has all but secured their place in the top flight for another campaign having amassed an impressive 39 points.

The Portuguese is considered to be the first choice to fill the shoes of Conte, with chairman Daniel Levy likely to be impressed by how he has built a team at Fulham capable of competing without spending large amounts of money.

SpursWeb Opinion

Many Tottenham fans are likely to be disappointed with this news should it come to fruition with many instead preferring one of Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Roberto Di Zerbi or Thomas Frank.

Silva has done well to help mend his reputation after a poor spell at Everton, but he does not carry the same level of appeal which would excite the fanbase as some other potential candidates.

The Athletic have revealed named Roberto De Zerbi, Steve Cooper, Thomas Frank and Marco Silva among potential candidates to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

Apart from the obvious names such as Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel (Daily Mail), reports have also suggested over recent weeks De Zerbi could be considered to replace Conte.

The Brighton boss’ work at the Amex Stadium is said to have impressed the Tottenham hierarchy (Football Insider).

GiveMeSport suggested a couple of days ago that Cooper is expected to be considered by Spurs, given the stellar job he has done at Nottingham Forest.

The report added that the 43-year-old could also attract interest from the likes of Chelsea, West Ham United and Southampton.

The Athletic have now backed up Tottenham’s interest in both Cooper and De Zerbi but have thrown two more names into the hat in the form of Frank and Silva.

The report states that the Danish coach’s work at the Brentford Community Stadium has ‘not gone unnoticed’ at Spurs while the fact that Silva is yet to sign a contract extension with Fulham, could make him a target.

Additionally, the report also states that Fabio Paratici is a big admirer of former Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique, who left the Spain job after the World Cup in Qatar.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hiring Enrique will be a huge risk since it has been six years since he has been in club football and he has no experience in the Premier League.

Out of the four Premier League managers mentioned, De Zerbi strikes me as being the most promising candidate but it remains to be seen if he can be prized away from Brighton.

While Frank is clearly a very good man-manager, I have my doubts about how he will perform at a bigger club when expectations are a lot higher.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has said that Son Heung-min could have seen a red card for his tackle on Kenny Tete in the first half of Tottenham’s 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.

Tottenham needed a response following the back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City, which had seen the Lilywhites lose considerable distance on the top four.

Questions were also being raised on the future of Antonio Conte ahead of the game, with some reports suggesting that the North London club’s hierarchy had already contacted Mauricio Pochettino regarding a return to the club (TuttoMercatoWeb).

However, the Lilywhites delivered a battling display away at Fulham to emerge 1-0 winners courtesy of a brilliant finish by Harry Kane in the dying stages of the first half.

It was back-to-the-walls stuff for the away side at times but they managed to hold firm and see out the win, with Hugo Lloris serving a timely reminder of his shot-stopping ability.

However, Silva felt that Conte’s men could have been reduced to ten men in the 28th minute when Son’s tackle seemed to catch Tete high on the ankle.

When asked about the South Korean’s tackle, the Fulham boss said (via IrishNews): “Yes, I saw it and I thought it could be more than a yellow card in that moment.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I thought the tackle looked much worse in slow motion than it really was. It was evident that Son was actually just trying to get a touch on the ball and Tete simply got there first. The muted reaction from Tete and his Fulham teammates told you that they did not think it was a malicious tackle from the 30-year-old.

Fulham manager Marco Silva has revealed that he is unhappy with the rumours of uncertainty surrounding Tottenham target Fabio Carvalho.

Recent reports have claimed that Tottenham, alongside Liverpool and Southampton, have been holding a keen interest in the 19-year-old midfielder, who has recorded three goals and an assist in seven Championship matches this season.

Carvalho, whose contract at Craven Cottage expires at the end of the season, has also allegedly rejected a new deal from Fulham, meaning the Championship high-flyers are at risk of losing him for free.

Cottagers manager Silva has been open in expressing his thoughts on the teenager’s situation and is not entirely pleased with the rumours swirling around one of his players – especially as a younger member of his squad.

Silva said at a press conference earlier this week: “I don’t know what the people around him are advising him or not. For me, it is really strange.

“Because we are talking about a really young lad. I hope really they are taking care of (him) not just for the moment, not just to do a big contract, but about the boy of Fabio Carvalho.

“I repeat, I’m not happy with the situation and all of these rumours around him because he’s a young lad. To be honest I really believe in his talent. He started to play for the club under (me), but I would like the situation to be a different way.

“I would like the people taking care of his career to look for him not just for the moment, not just to do something special now, but for the future of this boy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Silva has every right to have concern about the rumours surrounding Carvalho, considering he is such a young player. For now, he is a Fulham player and the interested parties need to respect that when approaching a potential transfer.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Everton are keen to tie down defender Lucas Digne to a new contract amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton have suffered an extremely poor season so far and confirmed following the 5-2 defeat against Liverpool on Wednesday evening that they parted ways with manager Marco Silva (Sky Sports).

Digne has been one of the few shining lights in a forgettable campaign for the Merseysiders as he has continued to impress.

The Frenchman joined Everton from Barcelona for £18m in August 2018 and has gone on to become one of the most sought after full backs in the Premier League (Guardian).

The report in the Daily Mail claims that Tottenham made an approach for Digne in the summer but were knocked back by Everton. The 26-year-old is said to be valued at around £70m.

Spurs have experienced problems at left back with Ben Davies out with an ankle injury and Danny Rose looking a shadow of his former self so far this season.

The Toffees are said to be working on a new contract for Digne to tie him down to the club for the foreseeable future.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I rate Digne quite highly, I don’t expect us to go for him as he is likely out of our price range. Besides, with the lob sided back three/back four system that Mourinho seems intent on employing, I believe a defensive-minded left back like Ben Davies would be a better fit than someone like Lucas Digne.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday as they look to follow up their loss on Merseyside last weekend with a win at the second attempt.

Spurs lost 2-1 to Liverpool despite taking the lead inside the first minute when Harry Kane headed home a deflected Sonny cross that came back off the bar.

Unfortunately, this defeat saw Tottenham slip into the bottom half of the Premier League table, joining their next opponents Everton.

Spurs are 11th with 12 points from ten games, while Everton are down in 16th after recording just a point a game this season in the league.

A win for Tottenham could kickstart their season again and make up ground on those top four spots, but a loss would see Everton leapfrog the North London side.

Everton manager, Marco Silva, who is under plenty of pressure himself at the moment, heaped praise on Spurs ahead of the match.

He said (Liverpool Echo): “They played the Champions League final last season and didn’t lose many players.

“They have fantastic players and a fantastic manager.

“We look at Tottenham as a strong side with really high quality and international players at their best. For me, it will be a tough one. With Goodison as the 12th player, we can win the game.”

According to a report in Sport, Tottenham have already agreed on personal terms with Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes ahead of transfer in the summer.

The Portuguese midfielder, who is currently on loan at Everton, has had a solid season and has become one of the Toffees’ most important players.

The 25-year-old was highly rated as a youngster at Valencia but failed to make an impression during his two seasons at Barcelona.

Spurs were also linked with a move for Gomes last summer ahead of his loan move to the Merseyside. He has revived his career this season, and shown glimpses of the form that he displayed earlier in his career.

Everton boss Marco Silva is also desperate to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis in the summer.

When asked about the speculation surrounding Gomes’ future, Silva said that his fellow Portuguese told him that he is yet to make up his mind about his future.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference ahead of Everton’s game against Spurs, Silva told Liverpool Echo, “The only feedback I’ve had until now is from Andre and what he’s said to me, because our relationship has been really honest since the first day.

“He hasn’t decided anything about his future, his agent also. That’s what I can say to you.

“We’ve already talked about not just him but Zouma also, and now it’s up to us to show that ambition.”

Silva remained hopeful that Gomes would repay the faith Everton showed in him last summer.

He added, “I’ll repeat what I’ve said over the last few months. Him and Zouma have been key players for us.

“They haven’t done anything alone, because all the other players have helped. They welcomed them and supported them, like we did as a technical staff.

“It was important for me to see, because maybe 10 months ago we were talking about believing in Andre and maybe other clubs didn’t in that moment.

“Of course we are talking about a fantastic footballer, I know that. We enjoy the moment and we enjoy his football also.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on Silva’s words it does seem like Gomes is weighing up his options in the summer, and there is no reason to think an offer from Spurs wouldn’t prove tempting for the 25-year-old.

While we at Spurs Web believe Tottenham can do better than Andre Gomes, if Pochettino believes the Portuguese midfielder will improve the team, then we fully back the club’s decision.

According to ESPN Mauricio Pochettino has said Frank de Boer’s sacking by Crystal Palace could further dissuade top-flight clubs from appointing young bosses.

Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew returned to the game at Everton and West Brom respectively this week, while West Ham turned to David Moyes and Palace replaced De Boer with 70-year-old Roy Hodgson adding that very few clubs are willing to risk appointing young, inexperienced managers, just as Southampton did with
Pochettino in January 2013.

However the article adds that Pochettino and Watford’s Marco Silva have bucked that trend and excelled in English football and their teams meet at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Ahead of the game the article says Pochettino was asked whether more clubs should take a risk on younger and less experiences bosses, and Poch said: “Look at the criticism of Crystal Palace because they signed De Boer, and after a few weeks he was sacked.
“The problem was he didn’t have experience in the Premier League. It depends on results. If you sign an experienced manager and you don’t achieve what you want, then why not sign a young manager with different ideas and different energy?”

Pochettino added that he could see similarities between himself and Silva but he is also sympathetic to the pressures faced by risk-averse owners and chairmen when it comes to managerial appointments. “It’s not my responsibility,” he said. “Of course, young managers will always appear with different ideas, but I am not in a position to talk too much because I don’t have experience of running clubs.

Pochettino added “That depends on the owners and sporting directors, who take the decisions on whether they want to risk a young manager or not.
“It’s so difficult because we’re always going to give our opinion after the results, after the decisions. It is so difficult if you are in the position of taking the decisions.
“If you play PlayStation and take decisions — sign players, change the bench, new system — you feel what it means to take the decisions and it has a massive effect in a negative way or in a positive way.

Pochettino also stressed: “As a manager you need to be calm in your mind for taking decisions. Then the board is completely different. They work on a different level, have different pressures.
“They need to take decisions about not only what happens in the changing rooms or with the results but about the dynamic.
“They care for many things, not only football, in a club. That is why it is so complicated, so difficult to manage a football club like Tottenham or another club in the Premier League.”
