Dean Jones has written in his column for GiveMeSport that Tottenham are keeping tabs on four different centre-backs ahead of the January transfer window.

Unsurprisingly, Jones claims that strengthening at centre-back is one of Tottneham’s priorities in January, with Eric Dier being the only other senior centre-back at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal apart from the two current starters.

Tottenham are looking at four centre-back options

The journalist says that Lloyd Kelly remains a ‘serious’ target and that Spurs have made ‘detailed checks’ on the Bournemouth star ahead of January, with his current deal with the Cherries set to expire next summer.

He reveals that the North London club have also made checks on Trevoh Chalobah, who the Lilywhites consider ‘an intriguing option’.

Jones asserts that Tottenham are also eyeing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who has been on their radar for a while.

He says that while Spurs remain admirers of the England international, they are aware that his price tag will be ‘sky-high’ and any offer for him is unlikely to be accepted by Crystal Palace at the moment.

Finally, Jones adds that Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ko Itakura has also impressed members of the Spurs recruitment team and that he will be monitored when he returns from injury.

Spurs Web Opinion

Out of these four, Kelly would be the most straightforward deal to complete, given his contract situation. Considering how well Van de Ven and Romero are playing, we will likely pursue someone like the Cherries star as a backup rather than a big-name defender like Guehi who would expect to start.

Alasdair Gold is in no doubt that Tottenham Hotspur will explore a move for Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly in the January transfer window

It was reported by The Athletic on transfer deadline day this summer that Spurs had made an offer of £20m for Kelly, which was turned down by Bournemouth.

The outlet explained that the Cherries were reluctant to let the defender leave so late in the window since they did not have time to bring in a suitable replacement.

Since then, multiple sources, including Matt Barlow (Daily Mail), have claimed that Tottenham could reignite their interest in the 24-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.

Football Insider asserted earlier this month that the South Coast club could be forced to sell the centre-back on a cut-price deal as the player’s contract at the club runs out next summer and he has not shown an inclination to sign a new deal.

Spurs will be on the centre-back hunt again soon

Gold has now suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s men will test the waters for Kelly again and added that they could also reignite their pursuit of Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

The journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “Kelly will certainly be one of the defenders they look at. Postecoglou made it clear when I asked after the window shut that he was short at centre-back now.

“Kelly’s contract situation, with just nine months or so left on his deal, marks him out as a good homegrown option for a mid-season swoop and he fits Postecoglou’s system. Tosin Adarabioyo will also be in the same contract situation if nothing new is signed.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Signing a centre-back will undoubtedly be Ange’s number one priority and we know that both Kelly and Adarabioyo rank quite highly on the club’s wishlist. Spurs could potentially look to bring two centre-backs through the door if they manage to offload Dier.

Lloyd Kelly, who was reportedly the subject of late transfer interest from Tottenham Hotspur, has admitted that things have been ‘up and down’ for him the first few months of the campaign after what transpired in the transfer window.

It was reported by The Athletic on the morning of deadline day this summer that Spurs had made an offer of £20m for Kelly, which was turned down by Bournemouth.

The outlet explained that the Cherries were reluctant to let the defender leave so late in the transfer window since they did not have time to bring in a suitable replacement.

Since then, multiple sources, including Matt Barlow (Daily Mail) and Alasdair Gold (YouTube channel) have claimed that Tottenham could reignite their interest in the 24-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.

Meanwhile, Football Insider claimed a couple of weeks ago that the South Coast club could be forced to sell the centre-back on a cut-price deal as the player’s contract at the club runs out next summer and he has not shown an inclination to sign a new deal.

Lloyd Kelly opens up on his start to the season

The centre-back has now admitted that he is ready to put the events of the summer behind him and focus on playing at his best.

Kelly told BBC Radio Solent: “I think looking back at the start of the season, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a bit of an up and down ride. But I’m here and I want to play the best football that I can.

“I think that’s my goal for this season, to be consistent in my performances and play to where I know I can play. So for me, that’s my goal.”

The defender was even left out of Bournemouth’s matchday squad against Brentford as the speculation over his future was intensifying towards the closing stages of the transfer window.

When asked if he made the decision not to travel to Brentford, or if that was taken out of his hands, Kelly said: “I have nothing to say on that, really. I think that’s the past now. I’m looking into the future and it’s me focusing on the games ahead.”

When quizzed on his contract situation, the centre-back responded: “I’m just concentrating on playing football to the best that I can, and I think that’s all I can say on that. That’s where my head’s at. I want to be playing consistently and playing to the level where I can be.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Reading between the lines, it very much sounds like Kelly was keen to leave but Bournemouth blocked him from doing so on transfer deadline day. Spurs will undoubtedly try again to sign him on a cut-price deal in January, particularly given their lack of sufficient options in central defence.

It was suggested by Matt Barlow in Daily Mail’s Q&A at the start of last week that Spurs could explore a move for Kelly once again in the winter since they are short of options at the back after Davinson Sanchez’s transfer to Galatasaray.

Is Lloyd Kelly a target for Tottenham?

It has subsequently been reported by Football Insider that the South Coast club could be forced to sell the centre-back on a cut-price deal as the player’s contract at the club runs out next summer and he has not shown an inclination to sign a new deal

Speaking about the Bournemouth defender, Gold said on his YouTube channel: “I think [Spurs will move for] Kelly because I could understand the logic behind that move. He is pacy. He has the homegrown status as well. I could maybe see that (in January).”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that Tottenham are more likely to pursue a right-sided centre-back to cover for Romero rather than another left-sided centre-back, with Ben Davies arguably capable of filling in for Micky van de Ven

So, I suspect a move for Tosin Adarabioyo is more likely. If Spurs manage to offload Dier in January, then the club could perhaps look to sign both Lloyd Kelly and Adarabioyo.

Tottenham Hotspur could find it easier to strike a deal for Lloyd Kelly in the January transfer window if Bournemouth cannot convince the defender to sign a new contract.

While Spurs managed to bring in one high-quality centre-back during the summer in Micky van de Ven, it was widely expected the club would sign another before the transfer window closed.

That didn’t happen, and with the departure of Davinson Sanchez last week, the Lilywhites may find themselves short of cover in the central defensive area.

According to The Athletic, Spurs had offered £20m for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly on deadline day. That offer was knocked back, and the 24-year-old remains a key part of the Cherries squad for the time being.

It has been claimed by journalist Matt Barlow (Daily Mail) that Spurs could return with another approach for Kelly in the next transfer window.

Bournemouth may have to sell Lloyd Kelly

Now, it has been suggested by Football Insider that Bournemouth could find themselves forced to let Kelly go in January, as his contract is due to run out at the end of the season.

It is thought the Premier League side may look to “cash in” on their player in the winter transfer window, and this has put Spurs on “high alert.”

A “cut-price offer” could sway the Cherries in the New Year, as they look to “recoup a fee” for Kelly. It is said both Tottenham and Liverpool will be keen to explore this avenue.

Spurs Web Opinion

Lloyd Kelly is a decent player and could be a good fit for us, especially if we can get a cheaper deal for him. However, I do think there are better options out there.

I would probably lean towards Tosin Adarabioyo over Kelly, but either way, I think we would get a good squad player who can provide solid cover at the back.

Journalist Matt Barlow has said that Tottenham Hotspur could try again to sign Lloyd Kelly in January after failing with a late effort to complete a deal for the Bournemouth star before last Friday’s transfer deadline.

It was reported by The Athletic on the morning of deadline day that Spurs had made an offer of £20m for Kelly, which was turned down by Bournemouth.

The outlet explained that the Cherries were reluctant to let the defender leave so late in the transfer window since they did not have time to bring in a suitable replacement.

Tottenham failed to bring any other centre-back through the door before the window shut and to some people’s surprise, they have since also decided to let Davinson Sanchez go to Galatasaray.

That means that Eric Dier is the only senior centre-back that Ange Postecoglou could now turn to if there is an injury to either Crisitan Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham could return for Lloyd Kelly in January

Barlow believes that central defence is one of the areas that Spurs will look to address in January, suggesting that another offer for Kelly could be on the cards.

The journalist said on Daily Mail’s Q&A: “There’s still quite a bit to do so I expect they will be looking for business in January. As mentioned, they are thin in central defence.

“They might try to revive the move for Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth. And Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, who was keen to leave in the summer, will have suitors again when the market reopens, possibly Atletico, which means Spurs will want to replace him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With Eric Dier seemingly not favoured by Postecoglou, there is no doubt that Tottenham would priority signing a centre-back in January. The Lilywhites will likely make a move for a homegrown option such as Kelly or Tosin Adarabioyo.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Bournemouth remain ‘really reluctant’ to let Lloyd Kelly join Tottenham Hotspur before the 11 pm deadline.

This morning, The Athletic reported that Tottenham submitted a £20m offer for Kelly, which was turned down by Bournemouth.

The publication explained that the lack of time to be able to find a suitable replacement was one of the reasons why the Cherries turned down the bid.

A couple of hours later, The Times claimed on their live transfer blog that Spurs had not yet called time on their pursuit of the centre-back and were expected to return with an improved offer for the player.

Deal looking difficult for Lloyd Kelly to Tottenham

Gold has now offered a discouraging update on the matter, revealing that a deal for Kelly now looks ‘difficult’ for Spurs to complete before the window slams shut.

The journalist explains that as things stand, the south coast club are ‘really reluctant’ to let the 24-year-old leave. Gold adds that Tottenham would also need to get another centre-back out of the door before making a move for the Bournemouth man.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Eric Dier now looks unlikely to leave, I still expect Spurs to offload Davinson Sanchez over the coming hours.

Signing a quality centre-back this late in the window was always going to prove difficult and the North London club would have identified alternatives if a deal for Kelly does not materialise.

The Times have revealed on their live transfer blog that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to return with an improved offer for Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly.

Fabrizio Romano was the first to report on Tottenham’s interest in Kelly, with the journalist claiming on Thursday afternoon that the Lilywhites are eyeing a late move for the centre-back.

He suggested that Spurs could include Eric Dier as a part of the operation to bring the 24-year-old to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, this morning The Athletic revealed that Tottenham had made a straight £20m cash offer for Kelly, which was turned down by Bournemouth.

The publication explained that the lack of time to be able to find a suitable replacement was one of the factors in the Cherries turning down the bid.

Spurs expected to try again for Lloyd Kelly

If The Times’ latest update is to be believed, Tottenham have not admitted defeat in their pursuit of Kelly.

The outlet alleges that the North Londoners are soon expected to return with an improved offer for the versatile defender, who can also feature at left-back.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that we are moving for Kelly, who is a left-sided centre-back, suggests that Tottenham expect Dier to leave before the transfer deadline.

With Sanchez and Tanganga also evidently on their way out, I would not be surprised if Spurs made a move for another right-sided centre-back before the window shuts.

Tottenham see £20m turned down for Lloyd Kelly

The Athletic have now asserted that Spurs made a straight cash offer of £20m for Kelly, which has been turned down by the Cherries.

The outlet adds the lack of sufficient time to find an adequate replacement is a factor in the south coast club’s decision to send back the offer.

The publication explains that Tottenham’s interest in Kelly has been ‘long-standing’ and that the Englishman’s ability to play as a centre-back and as a left-back appeals to Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs Web Opinion

Theoretically, we have two players in Van de Ven and Davies who can both operate as a left-back and as a left centre-back.  So, one would have thought that a right centre-back (as a cover for Romero) would have been a much bigger priority for Postecoglou.

Perhaps we will see Spurs making a late move for another centre-back of Perr Shurrs’ or Tosin Adarabioyo’s profile.

As such, the N17 club have not yet submitted an official bid or shown concrete interest in Kelly just yet, and Bournemouth would want to have a chance to replace their defender.

Eric Dier could be included in Lloyd Kelly offer

Romano claims Eric Dier could even be included in a possible deal, although it is not known whether Spurs would loan him out to Bournemouth or offer him in a swap, with his contract running out next summer.

Kelly is 24 years old, left-footed, and English so would count as a homegrown player for Tottenham, and he has played three times for Bournemouth already this season (TransferMarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion:

This seems like the kind of signing Tottenham would go for as cover for Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero. A younger centre-back with Premier League experience and decent pace, but will likely be happy to sit on the bench and wait for his big chance.

Jan Vertonghen has been arguably Tottenham Hotspur’s most consistent player in recent seasons.

The central defender continues to put in impressive displays at the heart of the Spurs defence week in, week out in his typical cool and calm manner.

The 32-year-old is out of contract in North London at the end of next season after the club decided to take up the option of a one-year extension in December (Spurs official).

The Belgian was limited to just 22 Premier League appearances this season due to two respective hamstring injuries along with suspension for his red card at Arsenal (Transfermarkt).

According to a report by Football Insider, Spurs have identified Bristol City defender Lloyd Kelly as a long-term replacement for Vertonghen on the left side of the central defensive partnership.

The 20-year-old has typically been operating at left-back for the Championship side who narrowly missed out on a play-off spot this season.

Robins manager Lee Johnson recently described the player’s physical stature as being an ‘absolute beast’ and has tipped him to become a mainstay at centre half.

Johnson told the BBC Radio Bristol’s Sound of the City show on 10/09/2018: “I think I have been quite vocal in my admiration of Lloyd Kelly as a footballer.

“I have to say he was absolutely fantastic in the game against Switzerland and so was Jay Dasilva [who is at Bristol City this season on loan from Chelsea].

“You could really see those two boys had been playing senior football and training with the men.

“Physically in the Championship, Lloydy is 6ft 3in, but he looks a bit slight. But if you see him at his own level he looks an absolute beast. That athleticism, his height, and even his chest now – we have spent a lot of money making sure he gets the right nutrition and the right supplements and you can really see that coming to fruition now.

“We was a couple of years ago a real beanpole but had that raw potential to be a top athlete. Now he is proving that.

“He played centre half for England in a four, with Jay Dasilva at left back. It was a really good game and England played really well.

“The concentration levels from Lloyd were good, obviously at centre half he is still learning at Championship level but at left back he has excelled.

“I think he will be a centre half as he ages and progresses and gets that experience but at the moment he is doing a sterling job at left back.”

According to a report by the Sun, Spurs are among four Premier League heavyweights looking at signing young Bristol City defender Lloyd Kelly.

The England U21 international has been in sublime form for City so far this season, and is beginning to catch the eyes of some bigger fish.

The 20-year-old already stands at a towering 6ft 3″, and has also showed his class playing on the left hand side of the Bristol defence, despite his future probably being in the centre.

This versatility is always an attractive selling point in a defender, especially in the Premier League where the games come thick and fast.

Tottenham could face stiff competition from Liverpool in particular, after Joe Gomez suffered a leg fracture this week.

With Dejan Lovren also out, it is possible that Liverpool could make a January move for the young Championship defender.

Spurs already have some young defenders of their own, with the likes of Juan Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, but should they be bulking their defence out further?
