Tottenham’s new signing Guglielmo Vicario has revealed that Ange Posteocoglou told him the goalkeeper is a vital cog in the way he wants Spurs to build from the back.

Coming into the transfer window, it was clear that one of Tottenham’s priorities would be to find a replacement for Hugo Lloris in goal.

The North London club have wasted no time in pushing through a deal for Vicario, who has emerged as one of the best shot-stoppers in Serie A over the last couple of years.

London World reported a couple of days ago that Postecoglou is excited about the Italian’s arrival, given his ability on the ball and his proficiency in making decisions under pressure.

Postecoglou wants Vicario to be an attacking keeper

When asked about his first impressions of the Australian, Vicario told Tottenham’s official website: “I spoke with him, and he told me the keeper is so important with his attacking mentality. He wants to dominate the game. I love this mentality. It will be a big chance for me.”

The 26-year-old refused to set a limit on Tottenham’s ambitions for next season, expressing his determination to work hard and take things one day at a time.

When asked about the objectives for the upcoming season, the goalkeeper said: “I think we need to fight a lot. We have to take the best for the club.

‘I don’t want to make specific goals, because we have to focus day by day. If we work a lot, follow the coach, I think we can reach a lot of goals. We are a big team of big players. For me, the team is amazing.”

Vicario has had a dramatic rise over the last couple of years, having played much of his football in the lower leagues in Italy until 2021, and he admitted that he is now living his dream.

Spurs’ newest addition added: “I just wanted to play football, not thinking what it could be in the next years. I just think the best thing is to concentrate on the present, what you can do now, not what you will do.

“I concentrate on the present and I live my life, my experience, my football. I train a lot. I love to train. Now, this is my dream. I want to live my dream now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Vicario’s determination to be the best player he can be and his willingness to learn would have appealed to Postecoglou, who evidently prefers working with players who are ready to unlearn some of their previous habits and take new instructions on board.

The Australian will ask the 26-year-old to be extremely brave on the ball, even if it means he ends up making some howlers over the course of the season.
