The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were happy for Hugo Lloris to remain as a number two for the upcoming season but the experienced goalkeeper was adamant that he did not want to be a backup.
Lloris himself admitted over the weekend that he had rejected a deadline day move to his boyhood club, Nice, as the offer arrived too late in the window (Nice Matin).
The Evening Standard claimed a couple of days ago that the decision makers at Spurs were baffled that the Frenchman rejected offers from Nice, Newcastle United, Lazio and multiple Saudi clubs despite expressing his intention to leave.
Spurs were open to Lloris staying as number two
The Athletic have now explained that earlier in the summer, Spurs were happy for Lloris to stay and offer his experience to the new number one but the 36-year-old made it clear that he did not want to be an understudy at the North London club or anywhere else.
That is why the goalkeeper is said to have knocked back several enquiries, including ones from Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
The publication also explains that Tottenham were willing to pay off Lloris’ contract on deadline day to facilitate a free transfer to Nice but the move never came close to being completed.
Spurs Web Opinion
If Tottenham had been willing to pay off Lloris’ contract in the summer, there is no reason for them not to do so now and allow the former Spurs captain to sort out his own future as a free agent.
