As reported by BBCSport, Mauricio Pochettino has called on his fellow managers to show more respect, in response to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s comments over Tottenham’s ambition.
Recently, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte questioned Tottenham’s ambition, claiming that the North-London club’s lack of transfer business reveals that Spurs aspire to less than teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Additionally, not long ago, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho suggested Spurs have so far enjoyed a very successful Summer having only lost one player in Kyle Walker, implying he expected all the Spurs stars to jump ship.
These comments angered Spurs fans and staff alike with Mauricio Pochettino reportedly demanding ‘more respect’ from his rivals during a pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham’s International Champions Cup match against Premier League rivals Manchester City tonight.
“I am not a manager who likes to speak about another club, another manager,” The Argentine said.
“I like to show respect. I expect the same from the people who compete with us.”
So far, Spurs have not spent a penny on reinforcements, whereas tonight’s opposition have spent over £200 million already.
“For different clubs who have spent a lot of money the expectation and pressure is massive,” He added. “For us it is the same. It is our own pressure and ambition.”
Moving on from his rivals, Pochettino then went on to reassure Spurs fans that signings were on their way as well as urging supporters to be calm.
Though he declined to comment on the Ross Barkley situation he did reveal that Tottenham have a plan and that money would eventually be spent. He said:
“Our moment will arrive. We are calm because our squad is competitive. We have a plan. We have a very clear idea of what we want.”
“There are a lot of rumours about the big sides spending money and it looks like Tottenham is not ambitious.”
“I want to tell our fans ‘don’t be worried’ because we will move in the market.”
The Jose Mourinho comments make me laugh. All Manchester United comments are funny when we keep finishing above them. As for Antonio Conte, he should know how ambitious we are from last season.
Do you think our rivals have a point? Where do you think Spurs will finish next season?
