Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has revealed his satisfaction with his squad after their friendly match against Nice on Wednesday evening, and had good things to say about Pape Matar Sarr in an in-house interview.
While a handful of Spurs players participated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the rest of the squad stayed behind at Hotspur Way to take part in extra training sessions and mid-season friendly games to stay sharp ahead of the domestic season resuming on Boxing Day.
It’s been a chance for many peripheral players and youngsters to show Conte what they can do, and by the sounds of it, the manager is happy with what he has seen.
The game with French side Nice ended 1-1, with Matt Doherty’s first-half goal cancelled out early in the second half. The friendly was played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with an attendance of just under 10,000 fans there to watch.
Youngsters like Harvey White, Bryan Gil, and even youth prospect Will Lankshear all got minutes in the game, as did Pape Matar Sarr. The Senegal international is yet to feature for the first time this season, despite being on the bench for 11 games so far (Transfermarkt).
It’s unclear whether Sarr will be utilised by Conte in the second half of the season or if he will leave the club, either permanently or on loan. But there is hope for his future under Conte after the Italian’s latest comments.
He said: “For the young players, for Gil, I think it was a good game, also Sarr, I liked him a lot with the way he got into the pitch.”

I’ve always been impressed by Sarr whenever he gets given a chance, but I really cannot see him getting enough opportunities in the second half of the season to warrant staying at the club. Hopefully, we can get him out on loan somewhere as it would be a shame to lose him permanently.
