Lionel Messi further cemented claims as being the greatest ever, when he single handedly dragged Argentina into the World Cup finals.

However while most of Argentina watched Messi give his masterclass, one member of the audience for the World Cup qualifying win over Ecuador couldn’t keep his eyes open.

That man was our magic  manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has admitted that he “fell asleep” just before Messi launched his rescue mission and steered his country from the brink of elimination and into the hat for Russia 2018.

However while Argentinian’s everywhere were having kittens our Mauricio was off counting sheep, catching some well earned shut-eye.

“If I’m honest, I fell asleep,” the Spurs boss told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

“My wife was angry because my children were watching the game in the room next door, shouting and waking me up.
“I then put the radio on. I didn’t know anything about the first goal [for Ecuador] but did hear about the equaliser.
“I watched the highlights the next day.”

He puts his players through rigorous training schedules and Mauricio himself doesn’t shy away from hard graft, a possible reason for him being unable to keep his eyes open for his country’s big moments.

Our hardworking manager said:
“I’m a minimum of 12 hours a day in the training centre,” “I usually get there around 7am and I leave at 7pm or 8pm depending on the day. It’s a long day.”
