Journalist Gaston Edul has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero will start for Argentina in their final group game at the World Cup against Poland.

Romero has experienced highs and lows over the last couple of months, both in the run-up to and during the 2022 World Cup.

The 24-year-old broke into the Argentina national team last summer and has now established himself as a key defender in the squad, with 14 appearances for the South American side (Transfermarkt).

The first half of his season with Tottenham has been disrupted by injury, though, and he’s made just 13 appearances for the North London club this term (Transfermarkt). Romero missed the last five games before the domestic season paused for the World Cup, due to his hamstring injury.

It was touch-and-go as to whether he would recover in time for the tournament in Qatar, but he made Lionel Scaloni’s 26-man squad in the end.

In the opening group game for Argentina, Romero was at fault for one of Saudi Arabia’s goals in their shock win. There were even calls from AS Argentina for the combative defender to be dropped after his performance.

And it appears Scaloni listened, as Romero had to settle for a substitute appearance in his side’s second group game, a 2-0 win against Mexico. While he may have only played just over 20 minutes of that game, it seems Romero is back in favour with his national team boss.

According to Edul, Romero will start in the Group C game against Poland tonight. Edul reports the Argentina defence will be: “Molina, Romero, Otamendi, and Acuña.”

It’s good to see Cuti back in the starting line-up for Argentina, and deservedly so. He had a bad game against Saudi Arabia, admittedly, but looked back to his best in the Mexico game and you just know he’s going to come out against Poland tonight and look to prove his doubters wrong.
