Lionel Messi has heaped praise on Tottenham centre-back, Cristian Romero, for his performance against Australia in the 2-1 Round of 16 win on Saturday.
Argentina looked comfortable on the ball against the Socceroos but lacked a cutting edge in the final third at times, until Messi turned on his magic to produce a few moments of class.
Despite the South American side conceding a freak deflected goal towards the end of the game, the likes of Romero stood firm at the back for Argentina to earn safe passage in the quarter-finals.
When asked who he would give the Man of the Match award to if he could not name himself, Messi mentioned Romero for his experience and influence on the pitch.
Romero was rushed back into the Argentina side after injury for their World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia, but was taken off early after a costly mistake or do. After being dropped for the second match, Romero has fought his way back to fitness and contention in the Argentina XI.
Messi said (AlbicelesteTalk): “Who I would give the MOTM other than me? It is difficult to mention a specific player, but if I have to mention a player, it is Cuti Romero. He is prominent and experienced on the field.”

Spurs Web Opinion:
Messi is a big fan of Romero and that kind of tells you all you need to know. He’s a top-class central defender, especially when playing on the front foot and looking to turn over possession. I can’t wait for Spurs to get a full injury-free season from him.
