Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has earned the plaudits of his national media with the publication Ole giving him a huge rating after a strong display in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening.
Argentina have made it to the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and will face world champions France on Sunday. It appears to be written in the stars that Lionel Messi will finally lift the sport’s grand prize, but plenty of attention has been sent Romero’s way after his performance against Croatia.
It’s been a somewhat frustrating domestic season for Romero so far, with just 13 appearances for Spurs under his belt due to injury (Transfermarkt) and many have cited these fitness concerns as impacting his performances at times.
Romero missed the last five games before the domestic season paused for Spurs, in a bid to ensure he was fit for the World Cup. He made it, and despite a shaky showing in the group stages which prompted Clarin to call for the 24-year-old to be dropped, Romero is now seemingly back to his best.
After an impressive performance in the semi-final, Ole had this to say on Romero, in what was deemed a 9 out of 10 showing from the combative centre-half.
They said: “Firm to cut, with authority to play, he gave his all and won the majority of duels. Compliments Otamendi so well, and that relationship demoralised the Croatian strikers. He lost his head during a duel with Petkovic.
“He earned a yellow card. But, he recovered the high level that led him to be an undisputed player on this team. With defenders like that on your side, it’s impossible not to dream.”

High praise indeed, and deservedly so. Romero was fantastic on Tuesday and has been throughout the knockout stages. Clearly, that slight dip in form at the start of the tournament was purely down to his match sharpness, and I have a feeling he could be a key figure in determining the result in the final now.
