It’s safe to say the media in Argentina are happy with Cristian Romero’s performances at the World Cup, after La Voz Del Interior described the Tottenham Hotspur man as one of the best ‘on the planet’ in his position.
Romero arrived at Tottenham last summer and has had a huge impact in North London since, becoming an integral member of the Spurs backline under Antonio Conte. He has now made 43 appearances for the club over that time (Transfermarkt).
It’s been a frustrating season for the 24-year-old though, with injuries hampering the first half of the campaign. He was limited to just 13 appearances this term and missed Spurs’ last five games before the domestic season paused for the World Cup (Transfermarkt).
The 2022 World Cup has seen Romero become a world champion with Argentina, and elevate his reputation even further on the biggest stage in football.
The tournament didn’t start too well for Romero though. After a poor display in the first game, a defeat against Saudi Arabia, AS Argentina called for Romero to be dropped from Lionel Scaloni’s starting lineup. Fellow Argentine outlet Ole even described the performance as Romero’s ‘worst game’ for his country.
Fast forward a few weeks and the Argentine press can’t get enough of the combative defender. La Voz Del Interior claim Romero has now established himself as one of the best “on the planet” in his position.
They suggest that initially “not everyone had him on their radar,” and that Romero has appeared “out of nowhere.” But now, they claim Romero is an “established footballer who will continue to wear the albiceleste for many more years.”

Among the Tottenham fans, the rise and success of Cristian Romero is no surprise. We have seen just how special he is, and the way he grew into the tournament at the World Cup was so good to watch. There’s no doubt he will be the heart of the Argentina defence for many years to come.
