AC Milan’s new signing Marco Pellegrino has said that he tries to model his game around Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero.
Romero had a promising first season at Tottenham following his switch from Atalanta in the summer of 2021 but much like the rest of the Spurs side, the centre-back struggled during the second half of last season.
Although he played an important role in Argentina’s historic World Cup win in November of last year, his struggles at club level saw many question whether he is an elite central defender (talkSPORT).
In an interview with The Athletic earlier this summer, the 25-year-old admitted that he was disappointed with the level of his performances last season and remarked that he is keen to showcase his best under Ange Postecoglou this campaign.
Romero has certainly had a promising start to the new season alongside a new defensive partner in Micky van de Ven, and Spurs fans will be hoping that his performance against Manchester United is a sign of things to come.
Cristian Romero is already a role model to others
Young Argentine defender Pellegrino, who recently completed a switch to Milan, has said that he rates that Tottenham man as one of the best in the business.
After signing for the Rossoneri, The 21-year-old told Milan TV (as relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb): ” My idol is Sergio Ramos, and today I like ‘El Cuti’ Romero. For me, he is a complete defender, and I try to follow him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One can understand why Romero would be idolised in Argentina, having played an important part in their nation’s World Cup triumph.
However, although the 25-year-old has the attributes to evolve into a top-class centre-back, he is far from the best in the world at the moment. He has to have a couple of consistent campaigns in a row to be in that conversation.
