Jeremy Doku is set to sign for Manchester City this week, but it has emerged that Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea both made a late push to snap up the young star.

Since Harry Kane left Tottenham for Bayern Munich earlier this month, speculation has mounted surrounding the club’s attempts to bring in another forward player.

Spurs have bolstered their squad with smart signings already this summer, but are thought to be eyeing an array of attacking talent before the transfer window closes.

Among those linked to the Lilywhites are wingers such as Brennan Johnson (Independent) and Wilfried Gnonto (LondonWorld). Meanwhile, more traditional strikers like Gift Orban (CaughtOffside) and Elye Wahi (Foot Mercato) are also rumoured to be on the club’s radar.

Last week, it was claimed by the Independent that Tottenham, Man City, and West Ham were all looking to make a move for Rennes attacker, Jeremy Doku.

Spurs interest pushed Doku’s price higher

That report claimed Manchester City were confident of getting a deal across the line, and it seems they have got their way. According to Sky Sports, the 21-year-old is set to join Pep Guardiola’s side in a £55.5m deal, pending a medical this week.

However, things almost didn’t go to plan for City. In a report from The Athletic, it is claimed Rennes bumped up their asking price for Doku after Tottenham and Chelsea looked to enter the race late on.

Apparently, City were actually worried the Belgian international could join Spurs. However, the player himself was keen to move to the Etihad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Manchester City have acquired yet another incredible talent as they continue to build an unstoppable squad. Adding Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku to that team this year really does leave the Premier League open to becoming a very one-sided competition for the next few years.

It appears as if Tottenham have lost out to Manchester City in their rumoured pursuit of Jeremy Doku, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the Premier League champions have struck a deal for the Rennes star.

Although Ange Postecoglou has some decent wide options at his disposal in the form of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon, it has been reported that the Australian wants one more wide-attacker, particularly due to the injury to Bryan Gil (Football.London).

The Independent claimed over the weekend that Spurs had joined Manchester City and West Ham United in the race for Doku.

It was revealed that the pacy wide-man, who has already been capped by Belgium on 16 occasions, was valued at £50m and that Rennes had already turned down West Ham’s bid for the player.

Jeremy Doku is Manchester City bound

Romano has now taken to social media to reveal that Doku is headed to the Etihad Stadium after the Ligue 1 club accepted City’s verbal offer of €60m (£51.1m) for the player.

The journalist added that the winger has already agreed terms on a long-term contract and will have his medical in Manchester later this week.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on the players who Spurs have been credited with an interest in over the last few days, it appears as if Postecoglou might want another wide-forward to replace Harry Kane rather than an out-and-out centre-forward.

That suggests that the Australian wants his frontline to be fluid rather than having a number nine who always occupies the centre-backs and holds the ball up.

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be involved in the race to sign Rennes wide-man Jeremy Doku, but face competition from Manchester City and West Ham.

With a little under two weeks to go until the transfer window closes, it seems multiple clubs are still keen to reinforce their squads for the season ahead.

Tottenham have already had a very busy summer, with players added in important areas across the team. Guglielmo Vicario is in as Spurs’ new number-one goalkeeper, Micky van de Ven bolsters a leaky defence, and James Maddison adds much-needed creativity to the midfield.

With the departure of Harry Kane, however, Tottenham have money to spend and space in their attack to fill.

Spurs are thought to be looking at a number of names, including wingers such as Brennan Johnson (Independent) and Wilfried Gnonto (LondonWorld), and out-and-out strikers like Gift Orban (CaughtOffside) and Elye Wahi (Foot Mercato).

Tottenham in the hunt for Jeremy Doku

Now, the latest name to be linked with the Lilywhites is Rennes attacker Jeremy Doku. But, Spurs are not alone in their admiration of the Belgian star.

According to a report from the Independent, Tottenham, Man City, and West Ham are all keen on the 21-year-old, but will have to pay £50m to snap him up.

West Ham are believed to be “more advanced” in their pursuit and “already have an offer in,” but have fallen short of the French side’s valuation. It is believed the Hammers ability to offer Doku regular first team football could be an advantage.

Meanwhile, City and Spurs are able to put forward “persuasive claims” to entice the winger to their clubs if Doku wants to compete “at the very top level.” The Manchester giants are “confident” they can secure a deal for Doku “in the next two weeks.”

The report adds that whoever misses out on Doku will likely make a move for Crystal Palace star, Eberechi Eze.

Spurs Web Opinion

Jeremy Doku is a phenomenal young player who is set for a bright future. If City go for him, we all know how that race will end. But, I would be very happy if we signed Eberechi Eze anyway, so either would be a fine acquisition for Spurs.

According to Ouest France, Rennes will be without two key players for this evening’s Europa Conference League clash against Tottenham, including winger Jeremy Doku, who was linked with a move to Spurs during the summer.

Doku impressed in his debut season in Ligue 1 after joining Rennes last summer, registering four goals and eight assists last campaign.

The winger subsequently shone at the European Championships for Belgium, breaking the competition’s record for most successful dribbles in the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss to Belgium (Opta).

Jeunes Footeux reported during the summer that Tottenham and Liverpool were both interested in the pacy winger, who was thought to be valued at £43m.

While Rennes managed to hold on to Doku, it has now been confirmed that they will be missing their star man for their Conference League opener against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

In addition, Ouest France stated that the Ligue 1 club could be without centre-back Lovro Majer, who is out with a hip injury.

Spurs Web Opinion

Doku not being available is a big boost for Spurs as the 19-year-old would have certainly given Emerson (or Doherty) a hard time.

We need a result to lift morales ahead of the London derby on Sunday. So, I expect Nuno to put out a fairly strong eleven, particularly considering this is likely to be the most challenging match of our group stage.

Jeunes Footeux report that Tottenham have now joined Liverpool in the race for Rennes winger, Jeremy Doku this summer.

Jurgen Klopp reportedly sees Doku as the heir to Sadio Mane at Liverpool, having admired the Rennes man since his Anderlecht days.

Doku has only been with the French club for one season, having transferred last summer to replace the Leeds-bound Raphinha.

The winger managed an impressive 44 appearances for Rennes last season, scoring four goals and assisting another eight (TransferMarkt).

The 19-year-old’s current contract doesn’t run out until 2025, but that hasn’t stopped Tottenham from showing interest. It is said that Nuno Espirito Santo, himself is driving the pursuit, with just days left until the transfer deadline closes.

However, Rennes are said to want a massive £43m for their man this summer, with Nuno viewing him as an alternative option to Wolves’ Adama Traore.

Spurs Web Opinion:

For a club like Spurs, £43m for a relatively unproven teenager who isn’t even scoring or assisting that many in France yet is too big of a risk. If it was a toss-up between the Premier League proven Traore and the potential of Doku, it would be the former for me.
