Alasdair Gold would love to see Jamie Donley force himself into the first-team picture sooner rather than later, revealing that the teenager is evolving into more of a creative spark.

Tottenham take on Liverpool this weekend but will be without Brennan Johnson who came off with an injury in the North London Derby – potentially freeing up an attacking spot on the bench.

Reports indicate that those at the club are optimistic that Maddison can play a part against the Reds (Times).

Could Jamie Donley make the step up at Tottenham?

In case either or both of them are not fit to feature tomorrow, Postecoglou might have to turn to young players from the academy and one man who was pictured training with the first team this week was Donley.

The 18-year-old has three goals and seven assists for the Under-21s so far this season, and Gold suggested that the teenager could soon find a place on the bench if he continues impressing.

The journalist said in a Q&A on Football.london: “In terms of academy players I’d love to see Jamie Donley get a spot on the bench. Although he’s in a position with a lot of first-team competition in it right now.

“The way he’s developing though, he’s becoming more and more of a creator than an out-and-out striker. Who knows, he might one day be able to fit the dual role Harry Kane used to have or even drop deeper to emulate James Maddison.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do expect Maddison to start against Liverpool and Postecoglou has been boosted by the return of Bryan Gil, which is why I do not think Donley will be included in the matchday squad against the Reds.
