Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United could fight it out for the signature of Hwang Hee-chan, as Wolverhampton Wanderers face increasing pressure to sell their assets.
The South Korean has been integral to Wolves‘ charge to Premier League safety this season. Hwang has bagged four goals and contributed three assists across all competitions this term (Transfermarkt).
Wolves were looking set for relegation at the end of 2022, but have managed to pull themselves away from the drop zone since Julen Lopetegui took over.
The Spaniard has improved the Midlands club from back to front, with seven clean sheets and an upturn in goals scored under his reign.
However, Lopetegui’s position is thought to be tenuous due to the club’s financial predicament. It is expected that Wolves will have to sell players in order to meet Financial Fair Play requirements this summer (BBC Sport).
Now, the latest from the Mirror suggests Tottenham could be ready to take advantage of Wolves’ situation by swooping for Hwang.
Apparently, Hwang has been brought “to the notice” of Spurs. At the same time, Newcastle United are thought to be keen, while Aston Villa and AS Roma have “registered an interest” in the 27-year-old.
Lopetegui is believed to be “loathe to lose” one of his key players, in a summer transfer window that could see him having to sell off an array of top talent.
According to the report, if players are to be sold, Lopetegui is adamant that “any transfer business be completed as quickly as possible.”
As a result, Tottenham or any other interested parties are going to have to “show their hands” imminently.
Spurs Web Opinion
Hwang is a decent player but I don’t think he’s ever been consistently impressive enough to warrant a move to Spurs.
We may be able to get him on the cheap, but I think our money would be better spent elsewhere.
