Foot Mercato have revealed that Chelsea were ‘close’ to beating out Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Brennan Johnson.
Spurs signed Johnson on transfer deadline day from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £47.5m, with some outlets suggesting that the 22-year-old was Ange Postecoglou’s top attacking target right from the outset (Telegraph).
Chelsea were also linked with a move for the Wales international during the final week of the transfer window but it was suggested by various sources that the player preferred joining Spurs as he felt he stands a much better chance of getting regular game time at the North London club (Times).

Chelsea agreed a deal for Brennan Johnson
If Foot Mercato’s latest update is to be believed, Chelsea came much closer to landing Johnson than previously thought.
The publication states that at one point in the transfer window, the West London side even reached an agreement with Forest on a deal for the attacker that would have seen Callum Hudson-Odoi head the other way.
However, in the end, the deal fell through, with Hudson-Odoi heading to the City Ground on a straight-cash deal, thus allowing Spurs to swoop for Johnson.

I am not surprised that Pochettino wanted Johnson but given the various midfielders that Chelsea have signed this summer, the 22-year-old would have been understandably sceptical of getting game time at Stamford Bridge.
I do think the Wales international’s preference to join Spurs (which might have potentially been influenced by his conversation with Ange) played an important role in us winning the race for his signature.
