Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas confirmed on the Last Word on Spurs podcast that Tottenham are not keen on selling Djed Spence this summer.
It has been widely reported over the past couple of weeks that Spence is one of a whole host of first-team players expected to leave Hotspur Way before the transfer window closes (Football Daily).
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed a few days ago that the right-back was attracting interest from several Championship clubs and also from the Serie A but the player was ‘unsure’ about leaving England this summer.
Now it appears the right-wing-back is close to joining Leeds United on a season-long loan for £1m, but there is no buy option or obligation in the deal (Phil Hay).
Spurs did not want to sell Djed Spence this summer
During his appearance on LWOS before the Leeds news broke, Thomas explained that Spurs still believe Spence is an asset and they want to see how he can develop with regular game time.
Lyall Thomas said: “Obviously there’s Lloris the goalkeeper, the three centre-halves, Dier, Sanchez and Tanganga, the left-back, Reguilon. Midfielders – Hojbjerg and Ndombele and then you have Djed Spence who I think will go on loan.
“I understand that Tottenham like Djed and want to see how he develops, he’s only a young player.
“I think his future will be somewhere else on loan. He’s a talented player and I know Tottenham like him as a player and want to see how he develops and if he will develop into an asset for them.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Postecoglou does not feel Spence has a future at Tottenham, it would still make sense for Spurs to loan out the right-back rather than sell him this summer.
The 23-year-old has a long contract at the club and if he does well out on loan this season, we can potentially recoup the fee we paid for him next summer.
